Dear Family,
For many years now and still today there are many personalities, both in printed word and in public speaking who make a living
by telling people how to help themselves, by teaching those who find themselves in a rut of some sort how to pull themselves up by
their own boot straps. The “self-help” movement has seen many an inspiring and persuasive author/speaker sometimes gleaning
from history’s greatest teachers and sources in order to offer a wise and rousing word. Overall, our infatuation with independence
and thus at times drawn to these sages of self-realization, it’s easy for us to take this stance as we approach God in our faith-lives.
“Give me the secrets I need, Lord, and I will take it from there.” But Jesus does not leave room for this sort of lone ranger approach
to discipleship and He certainly is not offering only an inspiring word so we can work on our projects according to our own scope and
desire. In today’s Gospel, Our Lord uses an image that at first glance and because it somewhat outdated might be lost on us if we’re
not paying attention. He tells us, “Take my yoke upon you…” A yoke is a device used by beasts of burden which ties them together and
pairs them as stride for stride, they work the land for future crops. In other words, the “secret” Jesus is giving us is not a personal
or private perfect at all, but a promise that if we stay working close with Him, He will be with us every step of the way. It is not only a
statement of empowerment, at least not one we are used to hearing. Rather Jesus is offering an invitation to a partnership for
whatever lies ahead, a position where interdependently we can “rest” in the knowledge and experience of sharing our lives, and the
hard work that comes with discipleship, yoked together with God who meets us where we are, so that we also may produce a land,
the land of our hearts, open to abundant harvest of fruit!
In His joy, Fr. Daniel
