From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We are now well into our fourth month of the current coronavirus pandemic,

together with all the constraints and limitations it has imposed on us. Here in

Washington State—and in the Catholic Church of Western Washington—we are still in

Phase I of Governor Inslee’s four-phase plan to help us safely find our way forward to a

reopening of the activities and interactions that have been closed to us since the stay-at-home order and the social-

distancing measures went into more stringent effect. The key in all this is for us to make clear and significant

progress toward eliminating the spread of the coronavirus through a dramatic decrease in the numbers of infections

and deaths due to it. It is more than likely that we will not be reaching Phase II of the governor’s plan until some

point in June at the earliest.

As I suspect is the case with many others, I find myself fighting “quarantine fatigue” and all that comes with

it. I miss the personal contact that I so enjoy having with people. I am saddened by the physical absence of

parishioners at our celebrations of the Mass. Our live-streaming broadcast of the Mass is a blessing under the

circumstances, but even it falls well short of how the Mass is meant to be celebrated, and this also makes me

somewhat melancholy from time to time. The circle of my life seems to have diminished a good deal due to not

having as many places to go nor people—family, friends, fellow parishioners—with whom I can visit and interact with

more directly.

At the same time, while the glass may be half empty, that means that it is also half full. I am still employed

and have a paycheck that I can count on. Neither I nor anyone personally close to me has (yet) come down with

COVID-19. I have a dwelling place to go home to every night, and I am entrusted with work that is both meaningful

and helpful to me. This work brings me growth and offers me strength in facing the challenges that are confronting

me, and it supplies me with parish and archdiocesan faith communities that are supportive, encouraging and helpful

to me. The glass is not just half full, it is nearly over-brimming.

Whenever I find myself giving in to the temptation to indulge in self-pity, I must remember two things at

least. First there are many people who face far greater challenges and burdens that I do—first responders, medical

workers on the front lines of the battle, those who have lost jobs, livelihoods, health, loved ones, or even their lives

to this scourge. I, who so far have had it so easy, have to remind myself of those who have so little and who already

have been tested so severely. Second, I have been given so much that enables me to cope and to keep on going, and

this reminds me of what I must try and do for those whose struggle is so much greater than mine. Please know that

you all remain in my steadfast prayers, in my fond thoughts and in my fervent hopes.

Easter blessings to all,

Fr. Kevin

Update On Improving The Live Streaming Of Masses In The Church

The live streaming system will hopefully be installed this weekend (there has been a delay in delivery). We plan on testing it before we make it live! It is hoped that we will be up and running next weekend. This system will also make it possible for us to live stream from two sources: Facebook and Vimeo, which will make our liturgies more accessible to more people, especially those who do not use Facebook. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this possible.

Wear Red For Pentecost!

Next weekend we celebrate the great feast of Pentecost, celebrating Jesus’ gift of the Holy Spirit to us. It is an OLG tradition to wear red when you come to Mass, so even though we can’t gather in person, we still encourage you to wear red.

Celebrating The Sacrament Of Reconciliation

Even though we are limited in our ability to celebrate certain sacraments at this time, Fr. Kevin is still available to hear confessions by appointment. Please call the Parish Office, 206-935-0358 or email Fr. Kevin at [email protected]

Inner Garden

Joyce Rupp from Prayers to Sophia Deepening Our Relationship with Holy Wisdom

Gracious Gardner, How wondrously you care for my soil. You send your waters of refreshment. You fertilize me with your wisdom. You warm me with your enduring kindness. You keep drawing me toward your light.

New growth continually sprouts from the soil of my spiritual garden. Flowers of creativity bloom. Herbs of joy flavor my days. Vegetables of nourishment flourish.

You constantly care for my garden, weeding it when weaknesses grow tall, turning the soil when the ground is hard, comforting and protecting me when enemies chew on my leaves. Gracious Gardner, I trust that you will continually water my growing garden and drench my flower beds with your abiding love. “I said, I will water my garden and drench my flower beds.”

LEARN

Join U.S. Catholic Bishops In Supporting DACA Recipients

In 2012, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was created. DACA protects undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children (“Dreamers”) from deportation for a 2-year (renewable) period and allows them work permits. In 2017, DACA was rescinded and legality of this rescission was challenged in courts across the U.S. It is now up to the Supreme Court. If the decision to terminate the program is upheld, more than 700,000 DACA recipients and their families will be impacted. This is tremendously stressful for everyone it affects. Dreamers are members of our parishes, our priest pool, our neighborhoods, and more. Learn more at https://justiceforimmigrants.org/. Please keep DACA recipients and their families in your prayers and pray for the Supreme Court to exercise wisdom.

ACT Urge HHS To Develop A COVID-19 Vaccine

That Is Not Tied To Abortion

Contact the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to urge the ethical development of a COVID-19 vaccine that is not tied to abortion. Some researchers use cell lines developed from the cells of aborted babies for vaccine research. This is not necessary. Other cell lines and processes exist and may be used to develop a COVID-19 vaccine. The U.S. Catholic Bishops strongly support the development of an effective, safe, and widely available vaccine for COVID-19. At the same time, they “urge our federal government to ensure that fundamental moral principles are followed” in the development of a vaccine. Visit wacatholics.org today to take action.

GIVE Thank You For Supporting St. Vincent de Paul

Thanks to generous gifts from the parish community and beyond, our St. Vincent de Paul Conference was able to deliver approximate-ly $23,000 in Goods and Services to 320 individuals in April alone – a new Conference high by far! Our Conference is seeing twice as many calls as usual during these difficult times and many are requesting assistance with large rent payments. Thank you for your generosity. Please continue to support our Vincentians in their good work as you are able. It’s easy to give online at www.olgseattle.org by clicking the “Donate” button. You can also send a check made out to “OLG” with “SVDP” in the memo.

Donate Your Old Vehicle To Catholic Relief Services

Help support the programs of Catholic Relief Services by donating your used car, truck, boat or motorcycle. The vehicle can be running or not! It's easy to do: Just call 855-990-4483 toll-free and a representative will schedule a pickup. You will receive a tax benefit from the total sale and CRS will receive 80% of the sale price. Thank you for your support!

GATHER

May Community Meal Cancelled

The Sunday, May 31 Community Meal is cancelled as a result of the “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order. Thank you for doing your part to keep everyone safe. Stay tuned for updates on the June 28 meal as they become available.

SERVE

Joining The Sewing Bee

Catholic Community Services is in urgent need of thousands of masks for their frontline workers. They are also trying to equip farmworkers with masks as the harvesting seasons begin. If you can sew, they need you too. Help the essential workers who labor to provide shelter and food for our community. Visit https://ccsww.org/sewing-bee/ for instructions and tutorials.

COVID-19 Assistance: Ways to Give and Get Help

With the ongoing pandemic, many of us find ourselves in difficult situations. Homeschooling, stress, isolation, financial strain, and health concerns are some of new challenges we face. Know that you are not alone. We are here to support you in any way we can. We are continually adding to our COVID-19 Assistance page: https://olgseattle.org/covid-19-assistance. Whether you need assistance, want to lend a hand, or both, we’ve got resources for you. We also have prayer resources to strengthen you on the journey. Please send additional resources to Jennifer [email protected]

Youth Migrant Project Is On!

The Youth Migrant Project mission trip for teens (graduating 8th graders through graduating seniors) is moving ahead! We are accepting applications and preparing for service in the Skagit Valley from August 10-14. Come learn about migrant life by visiting the camps, working in the fields, and distributing food at the Tri-Parish Food Bank. We will join with youth from St. Anne, St. James and St. George. We will continually monitor health advice as we proceed. If the full program isn’t possible, we hope to find ways to assist essential farmworkers and their families as they labor to put food on our tables! Applications are due by Sunday, May 31. For information, contact Jennifer at [email protected].

GET BACK IN THE LOOP!

Due to coronavirus concerns, this year’s Loop the ‘Lupe Obstacle Course 5K will be postponed to Sunday, August 23rd, 2020, starting at 1:00 p.m. We’re adjusting the schedule based on advice from the

Governor’s Office and the City of Seattle Parks and Recreation Department. Barring any major setbacks, large gatherings of 50+ people will be allowed in our state by the first of August, so we’re planning on a fun, end-of-summer event with appropriate physical distancing. Money raised from Loop the ‘Lupe supports a wide range of social service work at OLG, and WE NEED YOU! Sign up for the race at www.loopthelupe.com, follow @loopthelupe on Facebook, and (if you’re just in it for the t-shirt), consider being a stay-at-home “Lounge Chair Looper,” a new option for this year! Questions? Contact Race Director Brian Callanan at [email protected].

Send Us A Group Photo For Our Church Pews!

Just as Fr. Kevin was getting to know names of OLG parishioners, we were no longer able to gather in the church because of the coronavirus. So…we are asking each house-hold (no matter how many people) to send in a group photo—with names—that we will then post in our church pews! This will help Fr. Kevin and give us a visual sense of our community at prayer. Please email your photo to Helen at [email protected]. Let us fill up our church with our faces!!

We Can No Longer Take

Ink Jet & Toner Cartridges

The company is no longer in business. Thank you to Jim Tague for providing this recycle ministry for many years. The earth also thanks you!

Volunteers Needed To Film Our Masses

We would like to train 6-8 people to learn our new camera system. It will be fairly easy as there will be programmed "shots" along with the ability to manually control the camera when needed. We plan on recording Sunday and daily Masses and special occasions such as baptisms, confirmations, etc. If you are interested in getting trained for this new and important ministry, please let me know. This will be a work in progress so don't worry about being perfect!

“OLG: Many Parts, One Body”

Thank you for your support of our school and parish through the Annual Catholic Appeal at this time. Along with the All School Mass this week, we’ve also been gathering virtually as a school community in our student-led “School Faith Families”, through the livestream of our Salmon Release, and in our Family Field Day activities this month.

We look ahead to celebrating our 8th Grade class this year as they graduate on June 3rd. We’ll have a special Light of Leadership Mass at 10:00 a.m. plus many more surprises and events to help celebrate this special group of student in these truly unusual ties. Please pray for all our graduates and recent alumni as they navigate the transitions ahead.
