STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 15 / REFLEXIÓN DE LA CORRESPONSABILIDAD PARA LA SEMANA DEL 15 DE NOVIEMBREThere is something fascinating about stars. Even though science explains them to us, identifies them, and makes us realize they can each be very different, our perception of them is the thousands of “points of light” in our night sky. Our readings today deal with Christ’s Second Coming, the end time. Part of the message in these readings has to do with our preparedness. If the Lord would come today, are we ready? Are our lives in order that we might be counted among those united with the Lord in Heaven?

The First Reading from the Book of Daniel speaks of the stars; comparing the night sky to wise and good people: “…the wise shall shine brightly like the splendor of the firmament.” Daniel reminds us that to be truly prepared, we must seek and find righteousness. “Righteousness” is defined as “behavior that is morally justifiable or right.” Nevertheless, the Greek word in the Bible that we translate as “righteousness,” as is often the case, means more than that. It deals with our conduct in relation to others also.

To be righteous we must aspire to goodness, but we also must follow the admonitions of Christ to love one another. When we look at the night sky, are we one of the stars, one who leads others to justice? Practicing stewardship helps us in that regard.

33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME / 33º DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 3

People have been asking questions about the end of time forever. We see Daniel writing about it today, which means it was a point of discussion. We have Jesus speaking about it today in the Gospel, most likely in a response to a question. He describes it, but leaves us with footnote, that only the Father knows when.

People have scoured the scriptures for clues and written books and books about when and how they think it’s going to occur. Tim Lahaye, an evangeli-cal minister, has written numerous series centered on the end times. We try to equate current events, i.e. earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados, political upheaval etc., with what Jesus or others described in the Bible and tie them to the end times. Some have even convinced their followers to commit suicide on a certain day because they were given the time and place. “Only the Father knows…”

Yes, Jesus spoke about the end times, but he lived in the present. He was letting us know that someday it will all end, not to scare us, but to encourage us to always be ready and live in the present as he did. To live today, the best way I am able. If each of us lives in this way, then we have nothing to worry about.

Thursday Night Confessions at 7pm: November 12, December 3 (at Church)

God bless you all!

Fr. Jim

Emmanuel, A Christmas Concert Experience with Tajči DECEMBER 13, 6:30PM — 8:30PM / MCGOWAN HALL

A Story of Longing to Believe… In the True Meaning of Christmas. Told through stunningly beautiful music. Tajči (pronounced Tai chi) was a teenage superstar at the age of 19. Tajči became a superstar in Central Europe when she electrified an international TV audience, estimated at over a billion people, in the Eurovision Song Contest. Her life became a blur of concerts, video shoots, personal appearances and commercial tie-ins— an unending crush of photographers, adoring fans and bodyguards. Ironically the “dream come true” also brought feelings of isolation, loneliness and emptiness.

Shocking her country and peers, Tajči left it all— stardom, glamor, fame, friends, and family to come to the United States, alone and unknown, at age 21. Through her growing Catholic faith and in the freedom it brought her, Tajči found the inspiration to compose music and sing about her new experi-ences. “Emmanuel, A Christmas Concert Experience” comes out of her new found faith. Tickets available at olf.ticketleap.com or in the parish office. “I have seen her twice in concert and was deeply moved both times. Her story and music are inspiring.” Fr. Jim Ries

The greening of the fig tree is a sign that summer is near. The fig tree responds to the lengthening of days and to the light and warmth that the sun provides. It is a time of growth and fruitfulness. Jesus asks us in today’s gospel to learn from the fig tree and respond in the same way to the light that he brings. Those who hear and respond to his words are in the greening of their lives; they choose life, growth, fruit-fulness. The future holds no fear because the one we await is within and among us now.

◆ How does Jesus dispel the darkness in your life?

◆ How are you being called to bear fruit?

Take a moment to revisit this Sunday’s readings [Dan 12:1-3; Heb 10:11-14, 18; Mk 13:24-32] or view them online at http://usccb.org/bible/read-ings/111515.cfm

33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME / 33º DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 5

From Fr. Salvador LandaIn October I took 28 pilgrims from the Diocese of Orange to Fatima, Portugal. It was a wonderful experience to relive the moments of the apparitions of Our Lady to Jacinta, Lucia and Francisco. We visited the Basilica and had the op-portunity to celebrate the Eucharist in one of its chapels. Praying the Rosary in the evening at the exact place where Our Lady appeared was a special moment. We also visited the homes of the shepherds. I would like to share some pic-tures. Please visit www.olfchurch.net/Pilgrimage.html to see more photos!

Miracle of Life: Month SevenThank you for allowing me to live. I weigh about 1.4 pounds now. With my inner ear fully developed, I’m able to sense being up-side down in the womb. Please pray for me.

Week 27: My nervous system is continu-ing to develop so I can breathe and swallow

better. It also helps keep my body at the right temperature so I won’t get too hot or too cold.

Week 28: I now weigh about two pounds and am about 12-13 inches!

Week 29: Not so long ago, my brain was flat and smooth, but now it has grown lots of grooves. Different parts of my brain are getting more and more specialized, so they can help me better to hear, to see, to smell, and to keep my balance when I someday learn to walk.

Week 30: I looked a bit wrinkly before, but as I get bigger, the wrinkles are starting to go away!

Heavenly Father, as my body continues to grow in my mother’s womb let my spirit also grow to give praise and glory to your Holy Name.
