“YouCan’tgivewhatyoudon’thave.“Thistruismappliestoanythingthatweattempttogive,includingmercy.Togiveorshowmercyrequiresonourpartthatwebepossessedofmercy.Tobemercifulrequiresthatwebefullofmercy,andtheonlywaytobefullofmercyisilledwithmercy.Amercythatmovesustoforgiveallinjuriescanonlylowfromaheartthathasreceivedthismercy.Itisnotsomethingthatwecanconjureonourown,orgritourteethandbringintorealitybyforceofwill.Amercythatforgivesallinjuries—thatisall injuries—isbeyondourhumancapacityandisnothingbutthefruitofGod’smercifullovedwellinginourhearts.
God’s mercy is scandalous. Itisoutrageous,itistransformativeanditdiffersgreatlyfromexcusing.Someoffensesareexcusable;manyarenot.Mercyiswhenwearefacedwiththeinexcusableandtemptedtodeclarethoseoffensesunforgivable.God’smercyisscandalousbecauseitoffendsourinnatesenseofhumanjustice.
Quitesimply,God’smercyisnotfair.ThinkoftheParableoftheProdigalSonandthepoorolderbrotherwhoquitejustlyproteststhelavishnesswithwhichhisfatherwelcomestheyoungerbrotherhome.
Whenwereceivemercy,weare illedwithmercyandwillbemerciful.Thereisnoshortcut.Thekeytobeingfreeofhurt,resentment,bitterness,andunforgiveness,thekeytolivingoutthespiritualworkofmercyofforgivingallinjuriesistocryouttoGodformercyforourownsinsandtoexperiencethescandalous,unjust,lavishoutrageousmercyofGod,Whenweexperiencethisatthedepthofourbeing,itwillutterlytransformus.Ourattemptstoholdontopastgrievancesandhardenourheartstothosewhohavecausedusinjurywillseemtobemerecomedy.Indeed,whenwecontemplateourinjuriesandthosewhoin lictedthemuponus,weseethatsomemaystillbeinexcusable,butnonewillbeunforgivable.
