June 28, 2015-The Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

Remember “abracadabra”? For those who don’t, it’s not a person or a place, but, as the dictionary puts it: “a

supposedly magic word used by conjurors in performing a trick.” So says the magician, as he whisks the

drapery off the lady on the gurney where a few minutes earlier she had been sawed in two.

With his “Abracadabra” the lady stands up whole and smiling.

I thought of this business as my research yielded the fact that some Scripture commentators opine that the

words Our Lord said over the young girl in today’s gospel scene were a kind of magical formula.

Of course, we know that Jesus never resorted to magic. He is, rather, the Divine Physician who can cure what-

ever ails us. Over the years, I have often wished I had His powers, even momentarily, as I stood helpless at the

bedside of a severely sick person.

But upon reflection I realized those times were the very ones I needed to teach me how dependent we are on

God, for all things big and small. The section of the Book of Wisdom that forms our First Reading today de-

clares outright that “God formed man to be imperishable; the image of His own nature; but by the envy of the

devil, death entered the world.” (my emphasis)

Here, the word “death” refers to spiritual death, not physical, which can be the worse of the two.

God has power over both. We are naturally fascinated and impressed by Jesus’ physical cures, like those

worked on the old woman and the young girl. In their own way, they are like a dream come true for us.

How wonderful the world would be if we didn’t need hospitals! But since we do need them, wouldn’t it be won-

derful if there were a guarantee that all hospital patients leave perfectly healed.

The fact that they often don’t do so is all the result of the damage done to the world by sin. But physical sick-

ness and death are not the worse kind of evil. The spiritual forms of them are.

In our days, Christ works His spiritual healing power through the sacraments He gave His Church, especially

that of Reconciliation. There isn’t a sin you could name that cannot be forgiven, so long as the sorrow and the

firm purpose of life amendment is present in the heart of the penitent.

The Scriptures today urge us to believe and celebrate what Jesus did for us both by His dying on the cross and

His resurrection. The Alleluia verse from II Timothy 1:10 says it well: “Our Savior Jesus Christ destroyed death

and brought life to light through the Gospel.”

The Easter message never grows stale in the hearts of believers. And while we may be entertained by tricks that

happen with an “Abracadabra”, we know they are just that: tricks.

For true healing, hope and happiness, we can rely on another word which is a lot easier to say and spell, namely

“Jesus.”

First Reading: Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24

True wisdom rewards a person with immortality, and freedom from the poison of spiritual death, which sin

brought to the world.

Second Reading: II Corinthians 8:7, 9, 13-15

Paul has the challenging task of persuading his readers to donate to the collection for the Jerusalem church. He

asks them to be generous, being mindful that someday their own community might be needy.

Gospel: Mark 5:21-43, or 5:21-24

Two healing stories are “sandwiched” together, a regular device in Mark’s gospel. Common elements in the sto-

ries include two females; the number twelve; fear, and faith. Jesus heals the two evils of sickness and death in-

troduced into the world “by the envy of the devil”, as mentioned in the Wisdom Reading.
