Make Jesus’ Mother your own

Catholics reserve worship for God, but Mary has a special place of honor in our hearts. When we follow Jesus’ request to take his Mother as our own, we are sheltered by her maternal protection, share in the love between Mother and Son, and take a unique route to the heart of Our Lord. “Behold the handmaid of the Lord” (Luke 1:38). From the frst

“Yes” to her unique role in God’s plan to the final mo-ments at the foot of the Cross, Mary cooperated with faith, hope, and charity in her Son’s plan to restore supernatural life to us. She is ready to protect our new life and help us grow in love of her Son, if only we ask. “Woman, behold your son” (John 19:26). Jesus’ suffering and death on the Cross was the ultimate act of love. Out of love, too, he offered to share his beloved Mother with all of us as our own Mother. Heeding Jesus’ words, “Behold your mother” (John 19:27), we can take Mary into our hearts and homes. “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5). Mary brought oth-ers to Jesus by bringing him into the world and talking about him. Bringing others to Jesus is our job, too. We can follow her example, ask for her help, and be obedient like her.

La madre de Jesús es nuestra madre

Los católicos reservan la adoración para Dios, pero María tiene un lugar de honor especial en nuestros corazones. Al acceder a la petición de Jesús de que su madre sea nuestra madre, recibi-mos su protección maternal, com-partimos el amor entre Madre e Hijo y seguimos una ruta singular hacia el corazón de Nuestro Se-ñor. “He aquí la sierva del Señor” (Lucas 1:38). Desde el pri-mer “Sí” de su extraordinario papel en el plan de Dios has-ta los momentos finales al pie de la Cruz, María cooperó con fe, esperanza y caridad en el plan de su hijo para que recobráramos la vida sobrenatural. Está lista para proteger nuestra vida nueva y ayudarnos a crecer en el amor de su hijo con sólo pedírselo. “Mujer, aquí tienes a tu hijo” (Juan 19:26). El sufrimiento y la muerte de Jesús en la Cruz fue un acto de amor sin precedentes. También por amor ofreció a compartir con todos nosotros a su madre como si fuera la nuestra. Al aca-tar las palabras de Jesús, “Aquí tienes a tu madre” (Juan 19:27), podemos traer a María a nuestros corazones y a nuestros hogares.

“Hagan todo lo que él les diga” (Juan 2:5). María llevó a Jesús a los demás llevándolo al mundo y hablando de él. También es misión nuestra llevar a Jesús a los demás. Po-demos seguir el ejemplo de María, pedirle ayuda y ser obe-dientes como ella.

Juan 6:60-69, ¿A quién iremos?

Esta lectura se encuentra al nal del discurso de Jesús sobre el Pan de Vida en el que explicó el signicado de la Eu-caristía. Jesús dijo que él es el Pan de Vida. Si no comemos su carne y bebemos su sangre, no tendremos vida eterna. Muchos de los que lo escuchaban se marcharon horroriza-dos. Los Apóstoles también estaban confundidos. El día anterior, una multitud entusiasta estaba dispuesta a hacer rey a Jesús. Ahora se marchaban y Jesús dejaba que se alejaran. Entendía que la verdad es más importante que la popularidad. Jesús se dirigió a los Apóstoles y les preguntó si también ellos querían irse. Pedro, hablando en nombre del grupo, le respondió: “Maestro, ¿a quién iremos? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna” (Juan 6:68). Todos recono-cieron a Jesús como la fuente de la vida eterna. Creyeron en él aunque no lo entendían por completo. Los seguidores de Cristo sabemos que siempre hay esperanza incluso en momentos que parecen desesperados. Recordamos las palabras de Pedro: “Maestro… Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna”. Con Dios todos podemos tener esperanza. Él nos trae la vida eterna.

John 6:60-69, To whom shall we go? This reading comes at the end of Jesus’ Bread of Life Discourse, in which he explained the meaning of the Eucharist. Jesus said that he is the Bread of Life. Un-less we eat his -esh and drink his blood, we will not have eternal life. Many of his listeners left, horrified. The Apostles were also shocked. The day before, en-thusiastic crowds were ready to make Jesus king. Now they were running away and Jesus let them go. He understood that the truth is more important than popularity. Jesus turned to the Apostles and asked if they wanted to leave, too. Peter, speaking for the group, replied, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). They all recognized Jesus as the source of eternal life. They believed him, even though they didn’t fully under-stand him. Followers of Christ know that there is al-ways hope even in times that appear hopeless. We remember Peter’s words: “Master...you have the words of eternal life.” With God, we all can have hope. He can bring us eternal life.

TWENTIENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEP-ER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE August 19, 2018 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time In this Sunday's Gospel, the conflict escalates in the Bread of Life Discourse. Confusion is mounting in the crowd. "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" Their minds were thinking literally, not mystically. Jesus doesn't seem to help, however, and only drives his point home with more emphasis. "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you." Jesus would later institute the Eucharist at the Last Supper. There he would definitively establish the sacramental reality in which bread and wine become substantially his own Body and Blood. We celebrate this sacrament in the Mass. Perhaps we do not always understand what we receive. "My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink." What is the essence of food and drink? Food nourishes our bodies, providing essential calories for our survival. Water is used throughout the body to cushion joints, regulate body tem-perature, and protect sensitive tissues like the brain. When we receive the Eucharist, we receive the spiritual equiva-lent of these essential elements. Like water, the Eucharist strengthens the sanctifying grace moving through us. "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him." The Eucharist connects us intimately to Jesus and confirms our union with him. That is why we abstain from the Eucharist while in a state of mortal sin. It would be a contradiction and deep disrespect to these words of Jesus. To receive the Body and Blood of Jesus is not a right but a gift we receive with deep humility. As we receive the Bread of Life, grace strengthens our love, separates us from sin -- even wiping away venial sins -- unifies us with the universal Church, and helps commit us to humble service. Together we are nourished for our mission in the world!

MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR EN-TENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ES-CRITURA (Gospel Meditation) 19 de agosto de 2018 20º Domingo del Tiempo Or-dinario

Una hermosa e importante tradición Católica es la Adoración al Santísimo Sacramento. Este tiempo privado ante el Santísimo ayuda a responder a la pregunta de los judíos, que discutían entre sí. ¿Cómo puede este darnos a comer carne? (Juan 6:52). También, es de gran ayuda a nosotros, para experimentar una profunda apreciación de lo que es este regalo Divino de la Eucaristía. Es tan hermoso, profundizar en todo el capítulo seis de Juan, si usted puede leer y meditar en su oración se quedará maravillado de la profunda enseñanza sobre la Eucaristía. Desde la multipli-cación de los panes hasta cómo el pan de vida es creer en el Hijo de Dios y el Cuerpo de Cristo. Agradecerá cómo Jesús, se ofrece como sacrificio al Padre para nuestra salvación. "En verdad les digo que si no comen la carne del Hijo del Hombre y no beben su sangre, no tienen vida en ustedes. El que come mi carne y bebe mi sangre vive de vida eter-na, y yo lo resucitaré el ultimo día". (Juan 6:53-54). Pero, quizá se pregunta; ¿Qué es hacerse pan? ¿Por qué, si soy discípulo de Jesús debo hacerme pan para los demás? Y puede que sea bonito, pero de seguro no es fácil. Ser pan, significa ser menos egoísta y pensar en la esposa, esposo y los hijos antes que si mismo. Tus pertenencias ya no son tuyas sino compartidas con otros. También, significa estar a tiempo completo para la familia y no a pedacitos refunfu-ñando el tiempo para ellos. Ser triturados, amasados para ser pan es sacrificio, es servicio, es amor. ¡Ayúdanos Señor a ser pan para los demás!

Is it okay to tell a “white lie”? The Eighth commandment directs us to tell the truth al-ways (Exodus 20:16). While a “white lie” told to avoid hurting someone else’s feelings may seem harmless, tell-ing lies is

never acceptable. Here are some suggestions to help: “Does this look good on me?” A dishonest “yes” creates the wrong impression in the wearer’s mind. Instead of brutal hones-ty – “You look fat!” - offer a truthful positive – “It’s a great color on you." This is “mental reservation,” and is better than lying. “That’s personal...” Questions about your personal life, family, and nancials don’t require explanations, if the seeker has no right to know. A simple, “That’s personal,” should get the mes-sage across. This goes for seeking others’ personal information as well (CCC #2489). Tell the truth with love. What is right and wrong is not decided by popular vote. Admonishing the sinner is actually a spiritual act of mercy. “Whoever fears the Lord directs his friendship aright, for as he is, so his neighbor [will be] also” (Sirach 6:17).
