March 5, 2017 · First Sunday of Lent

Have a Happy Lent! by Sr. Mary Joseph, A.M.I.

Can anyone really have a happy Lent? Should anyone have a happy Lent?

Isn’t Lent a somber time of prayer, fasting, mortification and reflection on the sufferings of Our Lord? Yes, certainly,

Lent is all of that and more. It is that part of the liturgical year which calls us into the desert with Jesus. There we are to pray

and fast with Him. We are to lament our sins and the sins of the world which brought Him to his bitter Passion and Death on

the cross. Lent is a time for us to look more closely at ourselves in the light of the Gospel message, to take stock of our lives

to see how we measure up to Christ’s standards as He gave them to us in the Beatitudes.

Year after year, down through the centuries, the Catholic Church has solemnly ushered in the season of Lent and has

called her children to a period of prayer and penance as a preparation for the glorious feast of Easter. And those who entered

into this season with serious intent and persevered faithfully in the penitential spirit and practice of Lent found themselves

inundated with a spirit of joy and exultation on Easter morning such as the world could never give.

True happiness can be ours especially during the Lenten season because Jesus is always the source of that happiness and

we are never closer to Him than when we willingly practice mortification and self-denial out of love for Him. Suffering of

any kind, when accepted for love of God, brings us the greatest peace, contentment and true happiness this side of heaven. It

purifies us, atones for sins, helps us to die to self-love, earns us great merit and an increase of sanctifying grace! You have to

be happy about that!

The saints were masters of the art of mortification and self-denial. They sincerely valued suffering as their greatest

treasure and God’s most precious gift to them. They were the happiest people on earth. Through their prayers and penance,

good works and example, they brought countless souls to heaven.

That is why Our Lady of Fatima called us to prayer and sacrifice for the conversion of sinners and the salvation of souls.

Our Lady told the children that so many souls go to hell because there is no one to pray and make sacrifices for them. And

she showed those three little children a vision of hell which they could never forget. This spurred them on to make heroic

sacrifices for souls.

Our Hesitation We who have never had a vision of hell find it difficult to live a life of sustained penance and reparation

even though we believe that many souls are falling into hell like leaves from the trees on an autumn day. We see sin in the

world around us, unlike anything before in the history of mankind. Unprecedented evil surrounds us and increases. We have

every reason to do penance, yet we hesitate and draw back at the prospect.

The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak and we do have a common enemy who plays upon this weakness and cleverly

tries to dissuade us from carrying out our good resolutions in this regard. We have often tried and failed because we do not

love God and neighbor enough. And yet, it is prayer and penance that will make this love grow by leaps and bounds.

At Fatima, Our Lady told the children that the most important sacrifice God asks of us is the difficulty we experience in

keeping the Commandments and in the faithful performance of the duties of our state in life. If we carefully review the Ten

Commandments we may be surprised to find we are offending God in ways we had not considered.

We are living in a world that has become very materialistic, humanistic and atheistic. We are bombarded on every side

by an anti-God, anti-religious culture. This atmosphere has been especially fostered by the media. (What a great idea it

would be to turn off the television for Lent!) Too many Catholics have let themselves be brainwashed and follow sheep-like

the norms of a godless and criminal society. Society is murdering, abusing and corrupting the innocent!

We must also take careful stock of the duties of our state in life. We all have certain inescapable duties which God ex-

pects us to fulfill. These duties usually demand sacrifices from us. God asks us to fulfill these duties faithfully and to offer

this sacrifice to Him for the love we bear Him, in reparation for the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary

and for the conversion of sinners and the salvation of souls. We should also offer other sacrifices that present themselves to

us for the same intentions.

Take a Deep Breath. Let us then take a deep breath and ask Jesus and Mary to give us a true spirit of sacrifice and the

willingness to make reparation for our sins and the sins of others. Let us resolve to enter into the spirit of Lent right now, to

pray the Rosary every day and other prayers such as the Diving Mercy chaplet, to go to Mass and Holy Communion as often

as possible, to plan and carry out a program of sacrifices which are truly within our capability. If we do this,, we can surely

look forward to a truly happy Lent and a glorious Easter morning.
