OUR LADY’S ACADEMY NEWS

Our Lady’s Academy: Where Virtual Becomes a Reality Our Lady’s Academy: Staying Connected Our Lady’s Academy: Ahead of the Curve

Mrs. Chandra Minor, Principal of Our Lady’s Academy, had been talking with her staff about preparations for on-line learning several weeks before it became a reality because of the Coronavirus. There were many things to consider as Our Lady’s Academy prepared for this change in how the staff connect with their students and families in the

process of learning. While it is a scenario that no one wanted to have to think about, Our Lady’s Academy was prepared to move to on-line learning, when it became a reality. On March 16, Mrs. Minor gathered the staff together for a Staff meeting. Fr. James DiPerri, the pastor of the parish began the meeting with a prayer for Our Lady’s Academy community and the larger world community in this time of uncertainty. The teachers each articulated their plans for continuation of the education they were providing to their students in their classrooms every day. While all at Our Lady’s Academy know that academics is what is taught in the classrooms; the sense of community, the relationships the staff have with students and how to stay connected with the students and families was of utmost importance. We believe that education is an interactive process, which is strongly enhanced by the relationships our teachers have with their students (and families). The teachers, at all levels (Pre-K through Grade 8) have implemented new and innovative ways to continue to teach and stay connected with their students using several different virtual platforms and programs. The Administration and Staff at Our Lady’s Academy value parent feedback in this new learning process. After our first week of on-line classes, parents were asked to evaluate how the new processes of teaching and learning were going for our students and families at home. The parents offered valuable feedback that has helped the teachers tweak the amount of work and the process of delivering education to our students. Through the various classes, teachers are able to teach and give students feedback on their school work and assignments. Mrs. Minor acknowledges that we are all learning in this new world of on-line education. With the strong existing partnership we have with our parents, the staff are able to incorporate parent feedback and accommodate the way they are providing education to our students. At the Pre-K and Kindergarten level, several teachers are using Dojo, which connects primary school teachers with parents and students. Pre-school teachers are recording and sharing daily video lessons on topics such as the letter and number of the day. Teachers are recording themselves reading books to their students. Teachers are offering weekly “Zoom” hangouts so that teachers can interact with students and students can hang out with each other. Kindergarten teachers are communicating with parents using social media and are planning to have virtual reading groups via Zoom. Mrs. Minor has been able to virtually “sit in” on some of the classes and say hello to the students. She recognizes the importance of having the students “see” the staff are here and still participating in their students lives, albeit in a different manner. The important message is “we are here”. In the elementary grades, teachers are utilizing the programs/platforms: IXL, Prodigy, Dojo, Khan Academy and Google Classroom. Teachers are scheduling individual “check-in” conferences with students and parents via Zoom. Some teachers are using the “Remind” app to keep parents up-to-date about their children’s assignments. The teachers of the older grades are primarily making use of Google Classroom. At the middle school level, teachers have developed a new schedule for students that includes six live classes every week (1-2 daily) via Google Meet. Teachers post recorded, interactive lectures via Edpuzzle. All middle school teachers are using Google Classroom and some are incorporating use of IXL, Edpuzzle and Kahoot. Several grades were already using on-line textbooks and in those classes, work has continued using the same resources. In Science, students will be able to participate in live virtual, science labs. One Middle School teacher is considering making podcasts for his students.

6 Palm Sunday

(Continued from Our Lady’s Academy News) In these uncertain times of social distancing, teachers at Our Lady’s Academy are very aware of the importance of providing routines, having a schedule and trying to keep connections with their students and families, the best that they can. At Our Lady’s Academy, the inter-connectedness of our staff, students and families, based on the faith we share, are what makes our community so special. We can not wait to be back to hear our students’ energy, laughter, friendship and love in the hallways of our school. Nothing can take the place of having students in the classroom with their teachers. Mrs. Minor and the teachers and staff at Our Lady’s Academy miss being with their students and families in person. In the meantime, Mrs. Minor and teachers are happy to be able to be in contact with our students and families via the various ways they remain connected to their students. They look forward to when they can all be gathered together again in person.

COMMUNICATIONS

Fr. DiPerri will keep everyone updated as best he can. We will be communicating with parishioners mainly through our website, olca.org and emails. We will send parish wide emails, while at the same time be sensitive that not everyone has email. For those parishioners we will mail the correspondence home for as long as we can. Please share with your friends and neighbors when you receive notices if you know they are not online.

As mentioned prior, please update email address’ with the parish office. Many emails bounce back for one reason or another. Many RCN and COMCAST customers bounce back so if you have those services, you most likely will not receive emails from us when we send out parish wide. If there is a permission on your end for receiving emails, please add [email protected] to it so it allows emails to come through to you and not be rejected or sent to spam.
