Cierra Reese, a newly enrolled freshman at Miami-Dade College, has attended the Overtown Youth Center since elementary school. This summer Cierra was hired as a youth worker to work with the 2nd & 3rd grade classes; although they were a handful, she did a fantastic job of exemplifying the role of OYC’s relationship model: Parent, Teacher, and Mentor. A post-high student, like Cierra returning to give back her time, love, and talents; proves how effective the program is and how much we value and believe in the youth we serve. Post-High students emulate and embody the values and standards that the program is founded upon. Cierra Reese aligns with OYC’s mission to inspire, empower, and enrich and she is denitely on her way to becoming a positive contributing citizen.

Venice Butler is 9 years old and currently attends Downtown Miami Charter Elementary School. When Venice enrolled at the Overtown Youth Center she was reading below grade level with an average reading score of 32%. OYC’s Elementary Coordinators, Teachers, and Tutors helped with her reading comprehension everyday and encouraged her to attend OYC’s Saturday tutorial services for additional help in reading. With patience and consistency Venice raised her reading score

up to a 71% average and also passed the FCAT. We are proud to announce that Venice has been promoted to the 4th grade and now have the condence she needs to succeed.

Colgate Bright Smile, Bright Future dental van visits the Overtown Youth Center (OYC).

OYC students received free dental screen-ings, dental hygiene products, reports on the condition of their teeth, and a list of treatment referral clinics for follow-up treatment.

Colgate BSBF’s mission is to reach the under-served children & families in our community with a positive message of Oral Health Care. offers free dental screenings, referrals and education to all children.

Darrell Fletcher, currently in the 7th grade was accepted into the Cushman School, which is one of Miami’s top private institutions. Darrell was one of three children from the Overtown Youth Center to enter into a partnership program between private institutions and OYC. We are glad to report that Darrell’s GPA is currently a 2.9 and he has transitioned smoothly into his new environment. Darrell is very active in sports and has received awards in basketball such as, the MVP of the team and Best Defender. Darrell has truly let his light shine at The Cushman School and has really exemplied what a model student should be. The Cushman staff is very pleased with the new and rewarding partnership with OYC. So much so, that they are looking forward to increasing the number of OYC students attending their school for the upcoming school year.

It brings me great pleasure to be chosen as the Interim Director of the Overtown Youth Center. Words can not express my love, desire, and passion for the people of this com-

munity. As I assume this new role, I plan to serve this community with a vision that I could have only wished for as a child growing up in Overtown.

I look forward to bonding with community and corporate leaders, and others who are truly passionate about the future of our youth who are overwhelmed by many risk factors faced within our community (i.e. drugs, alcohol, absent parents, poor nutrition, inadequate living arrangements, etc.) I need your assistance in encourag-ing our youth to become more involved in pro-social activities such as, community leadership, colleges/universities, career opportunities, enrichment programs, and exposure to healthy lifestyles.

My prayer is that we will continue to Inspire, Empower and Enrich the lives of our youth by providing cutting edge programs, life changing experiences and opportunities that will positively impact their FUTURE.

Again, I am proud to serve in a community that I know… A community that is plagued by many challenges but most of all a community lled with HOPE!

Warm Regards,

Tina BrownInterim Executive Director

Community CornerMaking a Difference

With just two weeks to go before the start of the 2010-2011 school year, Alonzo Mourning Charities are making sure students at the Overtown Youth Center, Honey Shine Mentoring Program, and Zo’s Funds for Life are well prepared. Thanks to all of our donors, partners, and volunteers, the charity group was able to give away 500 backpacks lled with school supplies, which will give the students the condence they need to have a successful school year. For many students, the giveaway encourages them to do well. For others, it simply meets a need.

We would like to commend you for your generosity and dedication to making a difference in the lives of our youth.
