Titus 2:11-1411 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. (Titus 2:11-14 NKJV)

Titus 3:4-7

4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:4-7 NIV)

Grace of God Titus 2:11 cf 1 Tim 1:9-10

11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that....

He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. (2 Timothy 1:9-10 NIV)

v13 ....glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ

The Glorious Appearing

Page 17: Our Hope: The appearing of Jesus Christ

who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. (Titus 2:14 NKJV)

Christ gave Himself for us with a twofold purpose—one negative and one positive.

Intention of God’s Redemptive Plan

Page 18: Our Hope: The appearing of Jesus Christ

From the negative standpoint, He died in our place “in order to set us free (to ransom or redeem us) from every kind of lawlessness”.

The ultimate purpose and grace of God's purification is that we might become fit to be a people “who are truly His” or “a people for His own possession”.

Intention of God’s Redemptive Plan

This present age is evil

Christ.. gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, (Galatians 1:4)

But we are not taken out of it

Instead we are to be transformed by God

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2 NKJV)

3. “Godly” pertains to one’s relationship with God in that one’s life is centered on Him as the primary object of worship and on His will and purposes. This forms the foundation and source of motivation and control for the other two relationships.

Zealous for Good Works

Page 37: Our Hope: The appearing of Jesus Christ

The motivation for the present good works looks both ways—to the past and to the future.

We should be motivated to faithful service and good works as we:

(1) reflect back on what Christ has done for us and why, and

(2) as we wait expectantly for His blessed and glorious appearance for us.
