Adult formation classes offered this winter include: LifeLight: Ezekiel: Taught by Randy Frye, this 10-week study will delve into topics such as “Heavenly Vision in the Land of Exile”, “The Watchman’s Judgment”, “Breaking Down Whitewashed Walls”, and “Dry Bones, Hear the Word”! To register for this course and purchase a participant’s guide, contact Randy ([email protected] or 689-5175). The Meaning of Marriage: Modern culture would have you believe that everyone has a soul mate; that romance is the most important part of a successful marriage; that your spouse is there to help you realize your potential; that marriage does not mean forever, but merely for now; and that starting over after a divorce is the best solution to seemingly intractable marriage issues. But through this study of Timothy Keller’s book, “The Meaning of Marriage,” we will allow Scripture to reveal to us the true potential of this mysterious and glorious relationship. John and Becky Gargis will facilitate this 12-week study. Participant books may be ordered in Kindle or paperback formats through Amazon. To register for this course, contact John ([email protected] or 689-5175). Core: A Discipleship Lifestyle at Fountain City UMC: Written and taught by Amy Aycock, this 6-week study has been designed specifically for attenders, new members, and anyone interested in learning more about and applying the core components of cultivating a lifestyle of discipleship here at FCUMC. We will examine essential beliefs, history, and best practices of being a Christ-follower, a United Methodist, and a fully engaged and passionate member of FCUMC. To register, contact Amy ([email protected] or 689-5175). The Promised One: Seeing Jesus in Genesis: Taught by Melissa Coram, this 10-week study shows how issues raised in Genesis such as shame, fear, and the desire for security and significance are responded to in the person and work of Jesus. This study is ideal for those who desire a fresh perspective on Genesis, as well as a broader understanding of Jesus as the fulfillment of Scripture. Participant books may be ordered in Kindle or paperback formats through Amazon. To register for this course, contact Melissa ([email protected]). Operation Christmas Child: All Year

Thank you so much to all who helped donate, pack, ship, and pray over our Operation Christmas Child collection. As a church we were able to collect 224 boxes total! Our goal was 150 boxes and thanks to your generosity we were able to exceed that goal.

Our Operation Christmas Child collection may be over for this year, but we are already planning and preparing to give for Christmas 2016. There will be monthly collections of specific items leading up to our packing party in November. Be on the lookout each month for what we need for our Operation Christmas Child boxes.

For January, please bring in Ivory soap and/or washclothes. There will be a collection box in the welcome center each Sunday.

Please contact Betsy Castleberry ([email protected]) or Beth Petersen ([email protected]) with any questions.

Off Broadway Kids

Off Broadway Kids had a busy Advent season! They once again shared a great Christmas musical and added their voices to the Christmas Choir Program too. Off Broadway Kids meets on Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. and will resume on January 7. To join or learn more contact Kathryn Paden at [email protected].

Preschool Donates Pajamas For a Cause

Preschool families and staff collected 183 pairs of pajamas for the Scholastic Reading Club Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive! These gifts benefit Pajama Program, a nonprofit organization that provides new pajamas and books to children in need – especially those living in group homes, shelters, foster care, and orphanages. Since 2009, caring classrooms across the country have donated nearly 350,000 pairs of new pajamas. The Scholastic Reading Club has donated nearly 700,000 new books to Pajama Program to be distributed with these pajamas. What a blessing to be a part of this ministry!

Extravagant Generosity: 2016 Gifts Extravagant Generosity is more than just a stewardship campaign or a sermon series. It’s a way of life and a spiritual practice. We want to thank you for your Extravagant Generosity and your commitments to FCUMC. We are proud to share that the pledges for 2016 have surpassed our pledges for the previous year. Through your gifts of Extravagant Generosity that we will be able to support our 2016 financial needs. Your gifts make it possible to grow our church ministries supporting our desire to reach out across our community, our nation and beyond. If you are interested in making a financial commitment for 2016, please contact DeeDee Seals in the church office at [email protected].

Welcome Joshua Bracken, FCUMC Organist He fell in love with music by going to church early to teach himself to sight read hymns. In high school, he found his passion for the organ.

Anyone who has shared in traditional worship recently knows that Joshua Brack-en is a very talented organist. FCUMC’s new organist, fell in love with the organ in his church and knew he had to begin playing after hearing a tribute to Charles Wesley at Asbury University.

“The organist played the most magnificent prelude. After hearing that prelude and seeing the organ in our new church I knew I had to start taking lessons,” Joshua said. He started playing the organ before ever taking piano lessons. He graduated with a music degree from Asbury University with an emphasis on the organ. Joshua is continuing his music education by pursuing a masters of church music at Lee University.

Joshua began serving FCUMC as interim organist and later applied for the position. In December, FCUMC “officially” welcomed Joshua as organist for traditional worship. “This role will help me grow as a musician and a Christian. I am already learning so much from the staff and their leadership at FCUMC,” Joshua said.

His musical gifts are versatile: “Joshua has the talent, heart, and attitude to be the perfect addition to our music staff. He has already become a part of the Chancel Choir and has even been a substitute handbell ringer on short notice. I am excited to have him here!,” Leslie Graves, director of music ministries, said.

Joshua is a PK, “pastor’s kid”, from the Holston Conference so he has called many places (and churches) home throughout his life. He currently calls Cleveland, TN home where his father, Rev. Tim Bracken, serves as pastor of First UMC-Cleveland.

Senior pastor Randy Frye said, “I’ve watched Josh grow as an organist over the past 6 years, but more impressive is the way Josh has grown in his call to serve Christ through his many gifts. I’m excited that he will share those gifts as part of our worship team at FCUMC.”

Join us in welcoming Joshua. Greet him on Sunday mornings, he’ll be the one wearing the bow tie at the organ, or send him a welcome email at [email protected].

Michael and Cathleen Brantley joined during 8:30 a.m. traditional worship on November 15.

How Does Our Giving Reflect God’s Grace?By Kim Meade“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:7-8

John and I have always tried to teach our children to be grateful and to say thank you. This is important for several reasons; it is polite, it acknowledges that something has been given, and it shows appreciation. Through the years, Katie and Joe have formed the habit of thanking their teachers and coaches, and many times we have received comments about the significance of this small gesture.

I often feel that through parenting, God gives us glimpses of His character and teaches important lessons. He has shown me the difference a “thank you” makes. However, how much more should we be grateful to Him for every good and perfect gift He has bestowed on us? (James 1:17) God’s greatest gift is grace. We don’t deserve the hope His grace brings, yet He longs for us to accept this offering.

Think for a moment about a gift you have given someone you love. This gift was one you put time and energy into…”God created the heavens and the earth.” It is something you couldn’t wait to give because you want to show your loved one their significance in your life…”For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son.” It was a gift you deeply desired to give with no strings attached…” For by grace are you saved, through faith- and this not of yourselves, it is a gift from God.”

God longs for our hearts, not our things. He desires our time, our talents, our gifts, and our service to be freely given back to the One who has provided them for us to enjoy. Reflect on the words of the hymn “God of Grace and God of Glory”: “… bend our pride to your control: shame our wanton, selfish gladness, rich in things and poor in soul. Grant us wisdom lest we miss your kingdom’s goal.”

Will you give thanks to God today for all He has done for you? If you will, He is already giving you an eternal perspective.

Glory to the Newborn King: Advent 2016

What a beautiful season of celebrating the newborn King! May we keep the memories and songs of the season in our hearts as we welcome 2016.

Thank you to everyone who shared God’s love through our church, community and world this Christmas.

Resurrection 2016

FCUMC youth will attend Resurrection, the Holston Conference’s annual weekend of praise and worship for youth, January 22-24.

This year Resurrection moves from its longtime home in Gatlinburg to the LeConte Center in Pigeon Forge for one weekend only. FCUMC will take more than 80 students and leaders for the combined middle and high school weekend! Be in prayer for this weekend that God will move through the speaker (Fred Lynch) and worship leaders (Chris Tomlin and Bellarive). Lift up our youth, leaders and director of youth minsistries, Daniel Doubleday, in prayer.
