A WORD FROM OUR

HEADMASTER

Dear McCallie School Community,

I am blessed to begin serving as your headmaster. It is exciting to be on the Ridge and among teachers, parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends who are dedicated to this school. It is also humbling to remember the many who went before us and who worked, sacrificed, and prayed for this school to flourish. It is a joyful privilege to carry on this work together.

Indeed, the work of this place is a joy, and an important part of that work is the financial investment we make in our boys. We hire, retain, and develop the best teachers. We are committed to excellence in every program. We purpose to educate the boys with the best equipment and latest technology. We strive to make McCallie accessible to deserving families with demonstrated financial need. All of this requires money - much more than tuition alone.

Like each headmaster before me, therefore, I ask you to join in this work by giving each year to McCallie’s Annual Sustaining Fund. One of the reasons, I believe, McCallie thrives is because from its founding this school has been equally visionary and pragmatic. So, for example, we teach boys ideals, inspire them to dream big, and then provide them with the practical skills needed to live out those ideals and pursue those dreams in an ever changing world.

Gifts to the Annual Sustaining Fund are similarly visionary and pragmatic. These gifts demonstrate belief in McCallie’s mission by meeting the school’s practical needs. Your gifts put the mission into action and produce an extraordinary place for our boys.

So, if you have supported us in the past, I ask that you do so again. If you have not, please join us in this great work.

Best,

A. Lee Burns III ’87 Headmaster

Alumni“When asked why I continue to stay involved with McCallie as well as with the Annual Sustaining Fund, my answer is simple, DUTY. I strongly believe that it’s my DUTY to give back to the Ridge in any way that I possibly can, either with my time or finances. I want to do my part to ensure that the next generation of McCallie men can have the life shaping experience McCallie gave to me.”

Faculty & Staff“McCallie is blessed to have a very economically diverse student body. As a teacher, I really appreciate that the school is able to give hard-working boys from hard-working families a chance to have a life-changing experience here on the Ridge. I’ve taught and written recommendations for two of McCallie’s first three Gates Scholars. If McCallie had not taken a chance on those young men, the Gates Foundation may have never heard of them.... Put simply, the Annual Sustaining Fund changes lives because it allows the school to bring boys here whose families might otherwise have never dreamed that a McCallie education was even possible.”

And true we’ll always be.

Parents“Private school tuition simply covers the ongoing cost of operations - salaries, utilities, taxes, etc. The Annual Sustaining Fund and other charitable gifts do the rest. Everything that made McCallie the school that our son selected - the facilities, the programs, the caliber of the faculty and staff - is there because of the generosity of individuals who believed in the mission of the school. We know that our son is benefiting from those who supported these ‘building blocks’ in the past and we hope that our giving will help to continue that legacy well beyond his time on the Ridge.”

Students“I can say with certainty that McCallie has changed my life. As an institution committed to more than just academic growth, it is daily going above and beyond for students like me. I am eternally grateful for the generous folks that made my experience possible. Please continue to go above and beyond for a place that will change boys to men for years to come. I would not be the man I am today without my last seven years on the Ridge.”

For thee our prayers rise; shall

“Man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” What a vision for a school! These words have always inspired the McCallie community to imagine this school as a sacred space where we seek to impact and transform the whole student - heart, soul, mind, and strength - for a life of purpose, calling, and service.

I hope this brochure has reminded you not only of the words of our Alma Mater, but also of the many who work together for McCallie. Every year, alumni, faculty, parents, grandparents, and friends partner to keep McCallie strong. They do this by tangible acts of service and by sacrificial acts of giving.

In addition, as our Alma Mater reminds us in its closing lines, McCallie is also a place worthy of our prayers because prayers are not just wishful hopes. Prayers, just like acts of service or giving, are tangible acts by which we ask for and receive tangible blessings. So find a meaningful way to join us this year! Participate in the mission of McCallie School and transform this generation of McCallie boys.

Gratefully,
