Finishing Off Your Basement?

What kind of flooring are you installing?

One of the many selections you need to make when finishing off a basement is choosing the flooring.

You could choose carpet, epoxy coating, ceramic tile, laminate, hard wood, etc. But, how do you choose which is

best for you? First of all, how will you be using the area? Family room, bar area, exercise area, etc.?

Here are some pros and cons to several choices:

Epoxy coating: Dries hard and thick, damage resistant, budget friendly, excellent solution for high traffic

areas, comes in a huge range of colors. If your choice is to install carpet, tile or wood, apply a few coats of

epoxy first to provide a moisture barrier and to prevent future water damage.

Carpeting: Provides insulation from the cold concrete, comes in a wide variety of styles

and colors, low pile is less absorbent and will dry quicker, is soft and comfy on the feet.

Ceramic Tile: Versatile and stylish, durable, waterproof and easy to clean up. Like

concrete, tile is very cold, so some sort of in-floor heating would be a good option.

Laminate: Available in many patterns and designs including woods-looks, newer versions

can provide water-proofing which will allow for easy clean-up , easy to install, and easy to

maintain because of the plastic coated surface.

Hardwood: Although a beautiful look, it is susceptible to moisture and leaks making

water damage a common problem. It is best to glue it down, so installing a sub-floor would be

recommended.

Above are some of the most common choices people choose to put in their finished basements.

There are a few other options that are available that may work well for you and your situation.

Knowing what's available and the pros and cons of each option is the best way to start the selection

process.

If you need any advise or more information on a particular product, please give us a call and we can

RUBBERBANDS GALORE!

Everyday our newspaper and mail come with a large rubber band around

them. So in the junk drawer, there is a HUGE collection of rubber bands.

What does a person do with so many rubber bands? Here are a few ideas:

Loop rubber bands around each end of a hanger and your shirts should stay

put

Want to bring a sliced apple with you to eat later? Slice the apple and put it

back together, use a rubber band to keep it round and the inside will stay

fresh.

If your cutting board is sliding on your counter while you cutting food, wrap a

rubber band around one edge. This will help keep it steady.

If your broom bristles are getting old and starting to point in weird direc-

tions, put a rubber band around the bristles. About halfway down the bristles

of the broom, the rubber band will lengthen the shelf life and efficiency.

If you have a stripped screw, place a piece of rubber band in between the

screw and the screw driver. This will add some grip between the screw and

the screw driver and you should be able to make it work.

Fall Showcase of New Homes is right

around the corner. Our showcase house is

located at 4316 Old Shawano Avenue in

Green Bay.

You may say “Good night, don’t let the Bed Bugs bite” when tucking the kids in at nighttime, but it is actually

a serious national problem and yes, in and around Green Bay and the Fox Valley areas. There are 92 known

species in the world and they are more of a nuisance than flies or mosquitoes because they are harder to

get rid of. Bed Bugs are tiny brown insects that feed off of human and animal blood. They are very easily

transferred into our houses by being carried in on our clothing, luggage, pillows/blankets, etc. Once they

are in our homes, they will crawl and get into our sofa’s and/or bed mattresses. Bed Bug bites look like red

welts that are very itchy. If you continue waking up in the morning with these red welts, chances are it is

due to Bed Bugs!

If you suspect Bed Bugs, it would be in your best interest to call the professionals as they can hide under

carpeting, between walls, behind headboards, closets and other dark places.

Many companies that treat Bed Bugs, have specially trained dogs that sniff out

Bed Bug infestations. These trained dogs can locate Bed Bugs in a matter of

minutes compared to humans ripping apart a room and taking hours. These

dogs are 97% accurate. Most times Bed Bugs are transferred to our houses

by picking them up at hotels/motels, public transportation, rental homes and

other public areas. Education is key to prevent these pests into your home.

Purchase encasements for your mattress and box spring.

When going to a place such as a hotel or other place you suspect may have them, inspect the area for

signs. In a hotel room, pull back the sheets and inspect around the headboard and corners of the

mattresses before you even bring your luggage into the room. You are not only looking for little brown

bugs, but also small brown spots that resemble dried blood. This is a sign that they have been around.

When returning home and unpacking, open your suitcases in the garage. Bring both worn & unworn

clothing in to either wash in a hot cycle or in a hot dry cycle in the dryer. The heat will kill any bugs. As

far as your luggage goes, you can purchase “No-pest Strips” at any local store. Put a strip in the

suitcase and enclose the entire suitcase in a large plastic bag for 2

weeks. The pesticide will also kill any bugs.

You may think this seems extreme, but it is much less work and $$

compared to having to deal with the whole Bed Bug incident in the

first place. Which, by the way, could cost up to $1500 to bring a in

professional company.

Wilsonart Laminate Introduces A Seamless Solution

Laminate countertops have come a long way in the past few years. The surfaces come in textures that mimic high-

end products like marble and granite. Elegant and rich, but at a great value. Laminate is water resistant and

stands up to stains and scratches. It is heat sensitive, so a hot pad is a must

when placing hot cookware on the surface.

A few years ago, Wilsonart came up with a seamless solution that eliminates

the drop-in sink that usually sits on top of the laminate countertop. Going

this route, it completely cancels out that edge of bacteria and germs. The

sink and countertop are now all one piece that are bonded together to form

this consistent surface. This new sink is made of 100% acrylic and comes in a

variety of shapes and sizes. They are very easy to maintain and keep clean.

This clean, sleek look comes with a 10 year warranty.

This particular job that this one-piece unit was ordered for was a quick and easy, 2 day kitchen renovation. This

renovation included new countertops/sink/faucet, installed a tile backsplash and under cabinet lighting. Just these

few changes made a drastic transformation along with updating and freshening up a stale space all for under

$5,000.
