EDITORIALOUR COMMUNITY CARES THE MOST – OFFICIAL !

Go on then, how many bus stops are there on the good old 625 route from Govier Way to UWE? (*Answer below). How do I know this? Simple: last December I had to travel to London for a meeting. The train fare, even with a Senior Railcard, was £122 – one way. Megabus would take me up there very comfortably in 2 and a half hours for £10 return from UWE. Guess which one I went for? How to get to UWE, I wondered, so I looked up the 625. (As it turned out, someone kindly gave me a lift.)

This bus route was mentioned last night at the Severnside Community Engagement Forum (CEF) in Easter Compton. This is a meeting held every 4 months, with a local person (Neta Roylance-Smith) chairing it, and deals with “local concerns” that are raised by people like you: the In View readers. It is attended by a marvellous lady from South Glos Council: Nessa Jarman. She patiently listens to points we raise and then goes away and badgers the relevant people within the Council. She gets responses and reports back – by e-mail if you are on her list- and also at the next meeting. For example, she had listened to complaints of speeding in Over Lane, arranged for it to be monitored and reported back with the average speed. Peter Tyzack stated that there is no bus stop by Wild Place for parents wishing to take their children there. Nessa is on the case! She also stated that of all the groups she attends, ours is her favourite as it is the best-attended and most-involved.Two police officers attended and stayed throughout the meeting to answer any questions.

Similarly, the Fire brigade attended and stressed that they want more people to

Cover Photograph Courtesy of John Adams

take advantage of their offer to come to your home and conduct a free fire safety check. They will fit 2 smoke alarms – also for free. Please get one booked via 01179 262061 or www.avonfire.gov.uk.

There was an impassioned presentation on Pilning railway station, and we have included an article from its support group herein. To put their cause into context, 478 people used that station last year; 292,044 used Severn Beach station. We wish them luck.

The next CEF meeting is on May 29th at Easter Compton Village Hall.

Coming your way soon: the biggest Severn Bore for many years, so please consider getting on board. Not literally, of course - unless you are a surfer, but it truly is a marvellous spectacle to behold. One that coverage on the local television news can only give you a flavour. 20 years ago, Frances Barr and I organised a convoy of cars to go over the bridge and watch it. These were filled with local residents who’d never considered going before. (A bit like Londoners who have never visited the Tower of London or Madame Tussauds).

The next “biggie” is on Friday March 22nd around 8am, with a slightly smaller one but more family-friendly at around 8.30am the next day, Saturday March 23rd. There are several places where you park up, watch it sweep majestically past, and then repeat the process further upstream. The narrower the river becomes, the larger the wave. Details can be found on: https://www.severn-bore.co.uk/factors.html. Doug Nethercott has also kindly placed relevant information inside the bakery in Severn Beach.Kind regards,Nick(*59 bus stops)

In recent days we have heard news of the death of two great actors, Windsor Davies and Clive Swift. I still enjoy watching episodes of ‘It Ain’t Half Hot Mum’ and ‘Keeping Up Appearances’ and seeing these two great comedy actors at work. However great and gifted they were they relied on partnership with others for their true talent to shine through, and their success depended on others as much as themselves.

Both actors relied on the wonderful comedy writing of Jimmy Perry and David Croft and Roy Clarke, a wonderful cast including many other great actors such as Patricia Routledge, Josephine Tewson, Don Estelle and John Clegg. In addition there are the behind the scenes teams who carry out a wide range of tasks, they find locations and props, record and edit episodes. Without the hard work and skills of a wide range of people great actors like Windsor Davies and Clive Swift would not shine in the way that they did.

One of my favourite passages in the Bible comes from Paul’s letter to the church at Corinth. In Chapter 12 Paul writes to the church explaining to them that they are like a body, the body is not made up of one part but many. Each part, including the hand, the ear, the eye perform a separate function which contribute towards the whole body functioning fully. Paul explains, ‘if the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be.’ He highlights the equal importance of each body part; one body part cannot say, ‘because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body.’ For our bodies to

function we need all parts to carry out the function for which they are designed.

Paul challenges the Corinthians, ‘now you are the body of Christ and each one of you is part of it.’ The Churches in our community rely on those who are called to be preachers, musicians, pastoral visitors, workers with children, people who can carry out work on our properties, manage finances and many other tasks. This applies to all groups which meet in our community and to which we belong. They happen because of a wide range of people using their gifts and skills, knowledge and experience. I wonder when you last paused to think about the gifts and skills, knowledge and experience you have and how you may use them in the community. If our community is going to continue to be a place with a wide range of activities taking place it needs all of us to make our contributions.

In 2019, the world of Chemistry celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Periodic Table. It is considered to be one of the most significant achievements in science and as a result, the UN has designated 2019 as “The International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements”. But what is the Periodic Table?

The Periodic Table is simply a way of arranging the chemical elements in a tabular form arranged according to atomic number and chemical properties. It has seven rows, called periods, and eighteen columns, called groups containing elements with similar chemical properties. Strictly speaking, the Periodic Table which we refer to has a longer name, that being “Mendeleev’s Periodic Table of the Elements”, as he was not the first man by far to attempt to arrange the elements into a table to categorise them. The first recorded “Periodic Table” was actually produced by a French chemist, Lavoisier in 1789, and included light as an element, which it most certainly is not. The reason why we still celebrate and use Mr Mendeleev’s

Periodic Table is that it was, and still is, so accurate and allowed chemists to deduce things just from the position of an element within the table.

Dmitri Mendeleev was a Russian chemist born in 1834. He created his Periodic Table in 1869 when writing his textbook “Principles of Chemistry”. He found he could arrange the then 63 known elements in ascending order of atomic mass and could start to spot patterns between elements which came roughly every eight elements apart. Thus, he came up with this rudimentary-looking table:

The important thing to note about this table compared to other Periodic Tables of the time is that Mendeleev left gaps in his table.

He was the first and only chemist to acknowledge there were not only more elements to be found but also, through his table and from logical observations, to make predictions of the masses and properties of elements which were missing from the table.

AN IMPORTANT PERIOD

An Important Period In 2019, the world of Chemistry celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Periodic Table. He was the first and only chemist to acknowledge there were not only more elements to be found but also, through his table and from logical observations, to make predictions of the masses and properties of elements which were missing from the table.

For example, in 1871, he predicted a new element below Aluminium would be found, that would be an incredibly brittle, silvery metal of mass number 68. He was proved completely correct when Gallium was discovered in 1875.

Mendeleev’s table has stood the test of time as the repeating periodicity and similar properties of elements in the same group has been found to be due to their sub-atomic structure and the arrangements of electrons within the atoms of the element. We now categorize the elements by atomic number rather than atomic mass, but otherwise the table is the same and was finally completed in December 2016 with the addition of four new elements, bringing the total number to 118.

Hopefully you now have a much greater understanding and admiration for the man who effectively played Sherlock with all the chemical knowledge available at the time and produced possibly one of the greatest predictive scientific data sheets of all time.

Hats off to Mendeleev and his glorious table!

In January the club made a trip to Oakham Treasures at Portbury. As the exhibits are all under cover this was a good choice for keeping dry. The café was welcoming so a cuppa to start with then on to the displays.

There was so much to see with Shaun the Sheep also a star attraction. Whole shop displays from a different time zone, unusual post boxes and a whole shed full of vintage tractors and tools displayed as an art form.

It was a good day out with something for everyone, recognising brands in the grocery section that had been forgotten, wondering at the marvellous Post Office from Bletchley Park. An incredible place that had fascinating collections of bygone times.

Next meeting: 5th March Dot Culverhouse – Exhibiting produce for showing.

will be determined in detail in May, but if readers have any suggestions for crafts, flower arranging, baking, photography, children’s classes, etc. please let us know. The children’s tallest sunflower competition already has that golden theme, so please remember to get your seeds planted early. We will be visiting local schools for this in the Spring.

Last year, with everyone’s support, we were able to raise £1,400 for the Severnside Wednesday Club (formerly Care for the Elderly); please see the photo of the presentation to June Reynolds from the group by the flower show organisers. This year we have selected a local charity for the younger end of the age spectrum; Jigsaw Thornbury who provide care and support to 0 to 25 year olds with additional

needs. This involves helping the individuals and their families with the provision of therapeutic, educational and stimulating activities, training and services. There are a number of people in our community receiving such support and we hope you can help them by helping us in this special year for the Flower Show.

Windows Computer ScamThere has been a reported rise in the ‘Microsoft virus on your computer’ telephone scam.

This scam is where the caller is saying your computer has a virus. The caller claims that if the virus is not removed damage will be caused to the computer. The caller will ask the computer owner to access a website provided by the caller and download software to deal with the virus. Doing this will expose the computer to potential risks like: unwanted Malware, computer viruses or allowing remote access to the computer by the caller even after the call has ended.

In a recent case where the software was downloaded as per the caller’s instructions the software reported that there were numerous viruses on the computer. The caller asks the computer owner to provide bank details and personal information so that the viruses could be removed.

The simple solution is, if you receive a call of this nature or similar nature then end the call immediately.

If you have been targeted by a call of this nature and you have followed the caller’s instructions switch off the computer and isolate it from any network and/or the internet. If you have concerns about viruses on your computer consider seeking advice from a trusted computer specialist.

Councils and Councillors

Elections are held for district and parish councils every four years, and the next local elections in South Gloucestershire will take place on Thursday 2 May 2019. So with that in mind, what exactly does a councillor do…??

It is a voluntary ‘job’ (with a small allowance for South Glos Councillors, and none for a Parish Councillor), that takes up a certain amount of time, so not everybody can, or would want to get involved.

There are many reasons why people put themselves up for election, but the main ones people give are: to speak up for the community; to help local people; to make things better or to get things done; or to pursue a particular local concern. The Parish and District councils make up our ‘local government’ and both need local people to want to get involved.

In the UK we have what is called ‘elective democracy’, i.e. voters elect a person to act on our behalf (not to be told what to do by the voters), to use their best judgement to look at the facts and make decisions on our behalf. So, the people elected to the Parish Council need to work together to do what is best for the parish as a whole, and the South Gloucestershire councillors have to do what is best for the wider district.

There is an assumption that you need to be a member of a political party, but that is simply not the case. The system is designed so that the individual is the candidate, and so we should really vote for the individual we think will be best, not for the ‘club’ that they belong to. Of course, at the parish level ‘party politics’ have no part in what we do at all and, in fact, at South Glos level the parties can actually get

in the way, as councillors can get side-tracked by tribal behaviour. The successes come when we work together.

So, what does the Parish Council do, then? The Parish monthly agenda is on the notice boards, or on the website (psbpc.co.uk), and deals with the spending of funds that come to the parish from the council tax, how it is spent, and on what. It is the subject of much debate, but centres around essential maintenance of council property, or spending on new things to improve the area. Though, as the cuts bite ever deeper at South Glos, the Parishes are gradually taking over things that need doing locally. (All council meetings are public, so you can attend any meeting to listen in, - or even to have your say!)

The other part of the parish council’s role is in responding to consultations from South Glos, or other authorities, on things that are being proposed in our area. So the Parish Council will discuss the issue and make a collective response. This council response doesn’t stop any councillor from acting individually to respond on their own behalf, as any resident can, and should, about issues that concern them.

Sometimes a councillor will be required to attend a meeting of South Gloucestershire Council, or a meeting of another body, to represent the parish and then to report back. But as an individual councillor, you can decide how much you want to get involved over and above the monthly meetings. But if you are the sort of person who would phone or email about something that needs doing; if you sometimes say ‘something ought to be done about that’; if you care about the place you live, then perhaps you should think about

whether you could be a councillor, you could find it really engrossing.

If you want to know more, do have a chat with one of us. Have a look on the parish website

for our photos and contact details.

Monthly walks - Easter Compton, Pilning, Severn Beach Informal monthly walks exercising the rights of way in the area while getting a bit of exercise and meeting some local people for a chat and a bit of fun. Walks take place on the first Sunday of each month starting at 2:30pm, whatever the weather. Participation is free and open to anyone capable of the walk. You walk at your own risk. There may be rough ground, mud, stiles, occasional gentle climbs (no mountains in the Severnside area) and some stretches of walking on roads with no footpaths (be careful). Make sure you are wearing appropriate clothing for the terrain and weather. Our January walk from Easter Compton was very successful, attracting a record

twelve people and one dog. I hope by the time you read this we will have had an equally good February walk between Patchway and Almondsbury.

The next walk is a little further afield and will take place on Sunday 3rd March at the usual time of 2:30pm. We will meet at the layby on the A38 at Rudgeway; the one with the kebab van. There will be some slopes both up and down but no major roads this time and probably no livestock, though I can't guarantee it. The details of the meeting place are: lat/long 51.573734,-2.545591; O/S grid ref 623862; approximate post code BS35 3RY For enquiries contact Simon Meeds [email protected] Tel 07764 946768

Pilning Station Group have submitted a business case to Great Western Railway for "Modest, cost-neutral and do-able" service improvements at their station, which currently has just two trains a week on Saturdays only. Despite this, it has recorded an astonishing 939% increase in usage since 2016 - even though its service was reduced to "one-direction-only" that November, following the controversial demolition of its footbridge to make way for electric cables. Olga Taylor, Chair of Pilning Station Group, said – “We are not asking for the moon, and we are not being starry-eyed - we are simply putting forward a modest, sensibly-argued case for just a couple more trains to be added to the station's timetable so that more people can use it. The massive increase in usage since 2016 proves the degree of interest in our station, both from local people and those wishing to visit, and we want to build on that - and it is in GWR's own commercial interests to enable and encourage still more people to use it, generating more revenue for them through the farebox. They have responded positively to similar representations elsewhere - we hope they will show the same positive and constructive approach here too".

The business case put forward by the group is for:• A lunchtime train (withdrawn in January 2018) to be reinstated, making it easier for people to visit Pilning, have lunch in the nearby Plough Inn and continue their journey by the existing afternoon train. There is increasing interest in visiting lesser-known stations, and several books have been published on the subject: last year the isolated Sugar Loaf station in Wales recorded an increase in usage of 710%, including visitors from all over the UK and beyond.• An early-evening train to call during the summer months, enabling Pilning people to enjoy a full day out and still get home. At present the station's "last train" is at 15:34. A copy of the full Business Case paper submitted to GWR is attached. Usage figures quoted are from Office of Rail & Road statistics. The Gazette 23 January 2019 “Passengers double at station despite one-way trains” – https://www.gazetteseries.co.uk/news/17378127.passengers-double-at-station-despite-one-way-trains/?ref=mr&lp=5 SEE ALSO CAMPAIGN WEBSITE: www.pilningstation.uk

The Annual Parish Meeting is an opportunity to meet the Councillors and see what the Parish Council has achieved throughout 2018. Everyone is welcome.

Make a Change, Become a Councillor Almondsbury Parish Council is calling on residents, passionate about their community to stand in the local elections in May 2019.

What do councillors do?Councillors are the champions of their community and give residents a voice on the decisions the council makes. Becoming a councillor will allow you to make a real difference in your community by engaging with residents, local groups and businesses to find out their needs; making decisions on which services and projects the council should take forward; and getting involved locally to ensure the services are meeting your community’s needs.

How much time does it take? The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) Local Councillor Census Survey found that councillors put aside, on average, three hours a week for council work. This often includes attending meetings, engaging with residents and speaking on behalf of the council to other bodies.

Can I stand? There are only a few rules to stand for election. You must be: • A British citizen, or a citizen of the Commonwealth, or the European Union• 18 years of age or older • Live in an area that is served by a local councilHow can I get involved?Contact the Council to find out more or visit www.nalc.gov.uk/elections

Mrs Frances Barr MBE – written by Cllr Carol Woodhouse

I first met Frances in the early 1970’s when we both took our children to the local Mother/Toddler group. As our children grew older we were both involved with the Severn Beach Playgroup. As time went on our children went to Severn Beach Primary School and Frances joined the committee as a Governor and I became Clerk to the Governors. During the years our children were at primary school Frances used to help at fund raising events normally by selling raffle tickets. She became Chairman of the Governors, a role she carried out for many years. I remember Frances being on the Friends' Committee at Marlwood School for a short while but her first love was always Severn Beach School.

Frances was a member of Pilning and Severn Beach Parish Council for 32 years in total and had the honour of being the first female Chairman of the Council. I joined her as a councillor in 1991 when another well‐known local resident, Arthur Ball retired.

In the early 2000’s the Severn Beach Regeneration Group started and after a couple of years Frances joined the group as Secretary and Treasurer.

Frances continued to help out at Severn Beach School, helping with children’s reading and also attending annual school camp. Frances was very generous to the school both with her time and donating toys as raffle prizes for the children at their Christmas lunch.

In the last couple of years Frances joined us at the WASP luncheon club, often transporting other members who did not drive. Unfortunately ill health over the last few months meant she was not able to attend every lunch, she did however come to the Christmas lunch where she appeared to be in good health which made it even more of a shock when hearing of her passing.

I will always remember Frances with fondness and miss her until such time as I am sure we will meet again and who knows what groups we will be involved in together.

NEWS FOR PILNING & SEVERN BEACH7th February 2019 Dear Ward Members,

2023‐24, will see an army of new staff take responsibility for routine appointments from family doctors in a bid to take pressure off GPs and cut waiting times. NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens said the deal was the first major pillar in implementing the NHS Long-Term Plan, and will see some GP practices funded to recruit staff directly. The health boss also promised to speed up access to video and web appointments.

Pilning & Severn Beach Parish Council

Pilning & Severn Beach Parish Council met on Monday 4th February 2019 at Severn Beach School, Severn Beach, as per the published agenda for a meeting of the Parish Council with all 9 councillors in attendance.

The meeting heard a number of reports of vandalism in the area in recent times which had caused much distress. The Chairman reminded everyone that reports of vandalism must be reported to 101 so that the police are aware which in turn will help build the case for more of a police presence in the area.

The meeting discussed a suitable memorial for the late Frances Barr MBE. It was agreed that a tree would be planted with a plaque in Pilning Cemetery and that the path leading from Pippitts Court to "Just As You Are" tea cottage would be named Frances Barr Walk.

The next parish council meeting will be held on Monday 4th March 2019 at Pilning Village Hall, Pilning starting at 7pm. All documents and minutes relating to Parish Council meetings are posted on the website (psbpc.co.uk).

To contact the parish council please telephone the clerk on 01454 631499 or by email [email protected]

News from the Friends of Marlwood School

Many readers of In View will have seen the BBC 2 “School” series, which depicted problems faced in education. However, Marlwood School’s PTA, the Friends of Marlwood School, are keen to share the postive stories too. Since “School” was filmed, changes have been made which are having a postive impact. These include improved attendance (Marlwood now has the highest attendance

across all the Castle School Education Trust (CSET) schools), and continued development of teaching and learning. Marlwood has also welcomed a large number of new staff who, alongside long-standing collegues, have demonstrated a long term commitment to Marlwood, despite the difficulties, and are working tirelessly to improve students' learning and general school experience. Since September 2018, Marlwood has been under new management. The energetic Del Planter has lifted staff and student morale by encouraging everyone to be more open with each other and to treat problems as challenges to overcome.

Parents in the area remain committed to the school, as shown by the resurgent PTA group, the Friends of Marlwood School. FOMS has achieved a great deal since it was reformed in early 2018, including:

• through events and donations from parents and local businesses, we have raised over £5600 and have purchased a 3-D printer, microscopes, science equipment, calculators, dictionaries, software and amplifiers for the music department, and a trophy cabinet for the main foyer. • we have met some of the needs of school by “upcycling” – collecting what is no longer needed in the community. This is positive for our environment and helps people pass on items they no longer need. So far we have acquired a grand piano, an upright piano, a dishwasher, a microwave, three table tennis tables, knitting needles and wool, computer equipment and guitars, music equipment, and hundreds of books for the school library. • we have held four gardening days to improve the upkeep of the Marlwood grounds. These events proved to be really good fun and an excellent way to get to know other parents. • FOMS have worked hard to help raise staff morale during a difficult time. We have provided a decorated Christmas tree (thanks Almondsbury Garden Centre), baked cakes and given personalised mugs for all staff, and provided refreshments at school events. • a new Facebook group #WeAreMarlwood was established. Over 1600 former pupils are now members, and many have shared their experiences of Marlwood and offered support and inspiration for current students and staff. #WeAreMarlwood also set up the Marlwood School Amazon Wish list through which parents, relatives and former pupils bought an amazing array of pens, clocks and art materials. The wish list is still open on “Amazon Smile”.

Our projects for 2019 include: Fundraising for PE equipment, where we are off to a great start thanks to donations from organisations including Pilning and Severn Beach Parish Council (thank you!). We will organise more fundraising events, culminating in a large party for current parents and alumni over the summer. There will be more gardening and upcycling, and we plan to hold some painting days. These will be during evenings and Saturdays and we would appreciate any support.

2018 really was a fantastic year for FOMS. We are the "PTA", but are called “The Friends”

Calling all hockey players, beginners and returning players, young and not-so-young.If you are looking for a new challenge this year, why not give hockey a go? A local women’s hockey club, Thornbury Hockey Club, is holding “Back to Hockey” sessions for adults on Thursday evenings from 7 to 8pm at The Castle School Astro Pitch. Pop down and play some hockey in an informal and friendly atmosphere, it is a great way of meeting people, improving your fitness and having a laugh. If you haven’t played since school, or never played at all, it really doesn’t matter. Do not worry if you are nervous about picking up a stick again, cannot remember or don’t know any of the rules. We promise it is nothing like the old school days of muddy pitches and standing around waiting for a touch of the ball. And it’s free. If you would like more information please contact Sara on [email protected] or 07708472158. We hope to see you there!
