Editorial

Christmas past

One of the difficulties I encounter being Editor is writing an editorial for February when I’m still in Christmas mode! The Christmas tree still twinkles by the front door, the house is full of Christmas cards, bubble and squeak is still on the menu and I’m still wearing my Christmas jumper! By the time you read this it will be heading for Easter!

Christmas highlight for me was seeing the church full to bursting for the Carol Service, and on Christmas morning playing carols for the short informal service which was attended this year by the good folk at Emmaus. We also enjoyed having our family ‘take us in hand’ over Christmas, entertaining us and feasting us royally.

Christmas is now loads of nice memories, funny, happy and sad. I have been struck by the kindness of people, like the assistant at M&S who handled a concern beautifully. It was about the kind gesture of a hamper that developed a leak in a bottle which soaked all the packets. “No problem” she said – “Come with me” and taking Poppy’s list of soggy packages she toured the shelves to replace them – no receipt, no charge. I kissed her and wished her a Happy New Year, she was so kind and nice.

Sadness for another kind lady, Caroline Nemeth, who lost her battle with cancer at Christmas. One chilly evening in September Joe, her

husband, invited us to see his garden railway running. Caroline, ill as she was, insisted on fetching me a rug so that I didn’t get cold in the garden. Joe, we are so sad at your loss.We are also sad that several other villagers didn’t make it through Christmas. Such events are bad enough at any time but take on greater significance at a time of family rejoicing. Our thoughts are with all of you.

Funny moments? One of the best was finding ourselves fighting our way out of Cribbs in heavy traffic. My Poppy is a careful driver, and I am so lucky that she does it so well. She can, at times, be a bit of an ‘Urban Auntie’ and as we waited at the lights – in pole position - some boy racer drew up in his souped up Astra with BOOM BOOM BOOM going on. Poppy wound down the window, pressed the button on the CD player, turned the volume up full and blasted him with a ‘Fishermen’s Friends’ sea shanty! Green light and she left him still looking for his accelerator!! She does make me laugh.

There are some other acts of kindness inside the magazine. So here’s a resolution for 2016. Be kind, be helpful and be good neighbours. We have such thoughtfulness and kindness here and it’s what makes me so proud of our village life.

Kindness

We have hardly recovered from Christmas and New Year celebrations, the January sales, the return to school and work and the carnival committee’s Burns Night when we find that Shrove Tuesday has crêped up on us and people are giving up chocolate for Lent.

Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent was traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins).

In many religions fasts are a physical reminder of suffering, but in others fasts are a way of demonstrating the discipline of self-control and restraint. By rejecting worldly distractions, people can concentrate on more important things such as developing their spirituality. For Christians it’s a way of showing that we depend on God; it’s a way of focusing totally on him when seeking his guidance and help; it’s also, at times, an expression of sorrow and deep repentance, something that a person will do in order to acknowledge failure before God and seek his forgiveness.

We tend to think of fasting as going without food ( hence the pancakes using up the milk and eggs that historically were considered too rich during Lent) but we can fast from anything. Fasting can be rationing a pleasure, giving up a bad habit or curbing an addiction. There’s nothing magical about fasting. It’s just

one way of reflecting on our priorities and sorting out our lives – a sort of spring-clean involving abstention and self-sacrifice – and because Lent lasts from Ash Wednesday until the Thursday before Easter we have 43 days in which to improve!

When I was a child I enjoyed reading Charles Kingsley’s ‘The Water Babies’ a Victorian fantasy tale which, despite its moral undertones, would be criticised now as being politically incorrect. However, there are two characters that made a great impression on me - the fierce Mrs Bedonbyasyoudid and the motherly Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby. These two very different ladies – one who punishes and one who rewards - make one WANT to be honest, trustworthy, courageous, determined, considerate, kind, caring, and good!

To complement the personal discipline of ‘fasting’, why not undertake a parallel project focussing outwards on others by undertaking to commit 43 acts of kindness? However great or small they are, if done with love and grace, they will surely enrich you as much as those to whom you are kind.

As Jesus said, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:31)

May all your pancakes land the right way up!

News From Severn Beach School

Term 3 is a very short one and as you read this we will be about to break up for half-term!

The Oystercatchers and Sandpipers classes are having singing with Sue Davey from the Music Service every Friday and learning a variety of songs.

After-school clubs once again include Multi-Sports, Tag Rugby and Street Dance. The Friends held 2 Movie Nights – one for each Key Stage. Pupils snuggled up in pyjamas and onesies while they enjoyed the films.

The Storybox Theatre visited the school to present ‘The Snow Queen’ which we all really enjoyed.

Sandpipers finished their swimming lessons and when the weather gets a bit warmer it will be the turn of the Key Stage One children to go to the pool.

Slimming World has started in Severn Beach and is held at the school every Thursday from 7 – 9 pm all year round. For more information ring Tiffany on 07790 800001.

1SB1st Severn Beach Scout News

The Beavers enjoyed a Christmas Party in Mafeking Hall before breaking up for the holiday.

There are vacancies in the colony at the moment, so if your 6 year old wishes to join, bring him, or her, along at 6pm on a Tuesday evening. Adult helpers are also needed.

The Cubs held their party at Cattle Country in Berkeley and had a lovely time.

The Scouts had a visit to Bristol University to see ‘Science with a bang!’ It was a very exciting evening learning how gases can expand and contract balloons. The year ended with a noisy party.

The new term will start with a review of last years activities which included pond dipping, climbing, gliding, a trip to Switzerland, and meeting Johnny Johnson, the last surviving British Dam Buster.

The Scouter’s had a Christmas Dinner at the Swan inn, Tockington. They decided not give each other Christmas cards but to make a donation to a charity. A cheque for £70 was sent to South Western Air Ambulance Service.

There is no coffee Morning in February.

Editors note. Thanks Cubs for the lovely calendar you all signed and sent to WASP

All the proceeds from Flying the Flag go towards the upkeep of our two choirs, the Sunday Choir and St Peter’s Festival Choir. Contact Roy on 01454 632670, or write to 21 Chessell Av, Pilning, South Glos BS35 4LP and I will do the rest.

• It was Gordon Edwards birthday on the 21st, Friends at Care for the Elderly sent greetings.

• And, it is one year ago that Ray Edwards passed away. Deb, Kelly, Manaous, Becky, Louise, Pete, Kim and his grandchildren all remember him with great affection.

• On the 26th we remembered Ron and Grace Latham on their wedding anniversary. Unfortunately the severe gale resulted in the rope holding the

Dear Editor My young relative in Melbourne has asked me how many people have flown under the Clifton suspension bridge? Her Uncle Alan with the Australian Air Force in WW2 was over here in a Spitfire squadron. One of his duties, using a pared down Spitfire to gain extra speed, was to fly alongside V1 flying bombs, and using his wing, tip them into the sea. He told schoolboy me that he had used his Spitfire to fly up the Avon upstream as last of a flock of three machines. He said the last had to deal with the backwash of the others which increased the excitement. I understand that at least one pilot has been killed in this illegal manoeuvre by crashing into the Leigh cliff. I would be grateful to learn what is the history of these activities. Anybody know? No names, no pack drill! Kind regards, and thank you,James Morrell..

Jazz with Jessica and the Park Row Five

Were you privileged to hear Jessica Radcliffe sing in Thornbury with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra in the Festival or on several occasions in Thornbury since then?

Jessica, originally from Bristol, is a rising star in the highly competitive world of jazz singers, she performs regularly with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

We are delighted to welcome her back to Thornbury once again in company with The Park Row Five in a relaxed Jazz Café setting on Saturday 27th February 2016. You can enjoy an evening of original arrangements of a wide range of jazz classics, blues and ballads from Gershwin and Ellington to masters of Latin jazz and beyond, performed by The

Park Row Five with Gareth Williams on saxophone and flute, Rob Bartlett on trumpet, Stuart Potter on keyboard and piano, Ray Loadman on double bass and James Heming on drums accompanying Jessica's exhilarating jazz vocals.

It will be an evening of great music in the Armstrong Hall to appeal to all tastes. Finger food will be served in the interval and is included in the price of the ticket. Bar available.

The concert, which is part of the fund raising project in aid of the Armstrong Hall Redevelopment Project (Phase 1) will be held in the Armstrong Hall on Saturday 27th February at 7.30pm. Tickets at £12 each are on sale now at Thornbury Town Hall or by phone on 412272.

Dear Ward Members,length. Ref: 321240.

B4055 and Station Road, Pilning – The roadside signpost on the triangle has been knocked down. Streetcare have been informed. Ref: 325809.

Station Road, Pilning -There are two large potholes at the side of the road in the former level crossing. Reported to Streetcare. Ref: 326044.

Nicky Morgan, The Education Minister – has promised internet firewalls in schools to prevent access to hate websites e.g. jihadi on school premises.

Hospitals’ A & E Departments are being overwhelmed by an increase of 50% in alcohol poisoning and drug addition to 250,000 cases per year. This topic needs to have high level political discussions on the medical priority of self-inflicted conditions. NHS has requested that only patients with real emergency conditions attend A & E departments.

Gonorrhea – A mutation of this disease has been discovered in the North of England that has been proved totally resistance to all anti-biotics. The Director of Health is writing to all GPs with the

13

best possible course of treatment for this condition.

70,000 Families – were without a home of their own for Christmas. Some in B&B hotels etc. Not much of a Christmas for children having to go out during the day. This does not include single people sleeping rough.

Keep an eye out for – Let’s hope we can keep our area free from fly-tipping, pot-holes, litter and dog mess in 2016 by promptly reporting any problems. Our recycling seems to be very good and on target.

Yours sincerely,Robert C. Griffin Councillor for Pilning & Severn Beach.

The total collected to date for the carol singing at Easter Compton and Compton Greenfield is £858.34. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this magnificent sum either by joining the singing evenings, acting as hosts to the singers, or by listening and contributing in the collection boxes.

Considering the abundant rain that we have been experiencing, it is quite a wonder that all three of the evenings we made our rounds were dry and relatively warm, making life for the singers a lot more comfortable. Our hosts were also spared dripping coats and bedraggled figures turning up at the end of the evening.

I am very happy to say that the Compton carol singing tradition will continue as Sandra Dawkins, of Easter Compton, has stepped into the breach and will be organising the rounds

in 2016. When at school Sandra was a pupil of John Pullin, which keeps a nice link going back to the original carol singing rounds. We shall all be supporting Sandra next Christmas.

Major Ian and Major Tracey Mountford of the Bristol Branch of the Salvation Army are moving on this year to another posting. They have expressed their deepest gratitude to all the Carol Singing Team for the generous support we have given them over the years. The monies have contributed towards the new Church Community and Family Centre which is now up and running in Ashley Road, Bristol.

It only remains for me to wish you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year!

TIME 4 READING REWARD!

Well done St Peters! We have achieved a Bronze Award through everyone’s hard work. The book lists in the library and outside the staff room are looking very full indeed. New reading monitoring cards were sent home last week and the only change on these is that we are being asked to read 15 minutes a day rather than 10; easy for a super-reading school like ours!

In recognition of everyone’s hard work we had a whole-school treat on Friday 12th January. Explorer-Zone set up a large tent in the hall and each class had an exciting lesson about space within it.

THORNBURY ARTS FESTIVALYear 5 & 6 have been kindly invited to watch a production for schools by the Bristol Old Vic Theatre Students called ‘The Ruff Guide to Shakespeare’ which is being produced at the Armstrong Hall in Thornbury. Following my article last month ‘Cover Story’ I have received thisInformation about the new works on Severnside.

Dear Editor, Thank you for giving SITA UK (now known as SUEZ) the opportunity to explain to your readers about the energy recovery centre that is being constructed just off the A403, next to the Seabank Power Station.

The development of the Severnside Energy Recovery Centre (SERC) represents around £200 million worth of investment in the area. The facility will produce electricity from residual (non-recyclable) waste. It is expected to be fully operational around August/September 2016 and 56 new permanent jobs will have been created.

The SERC will be capable of processing up to 400,000 tonnes of non‐recyclable waste each year. The treatment process will produce enough electricity to power the equivalent of approximately 50,000 homes (comparable to almost half the homes in South Gloucestershire). The site is close to existing National Grid export cables through which the electricity generated will be exported. The SERC is also enabled to potentially export heat and the company, in conjunction with South Gloucestershire Council, is actively assessing the

technical and economic feasibility for the distribution of heat.

Since construction work began on the brownfield land site at the end of 2013 it has created both jobs and business opportunities. Between 200 and 700 people have been working at the site, accumulating over 1.6 million working hours to date.

Testing of the equipment installed without any waste present (called cold commissioning) is underway and it is anticipated that hot commissioning, where waste will start to be delivered and treated on site, will begin in March.

The SERC will be able to accept waste via rail and road. A new railhead at Severnside is being constructed to enable municipal (black bag) waste from West London to arrive by rail, minimising vehicle traffic movements and using an energy efficient mode of transport. A new roundabout has been created on the A403 and a permanent access road to the SERC, so that other waste can be delivered safely via road.

Readers of ‘In View’ can be reassured that thermal treatment of waste is among the most tightly regulated industrial processes in Europe. The SERC has been designed to satisfy the strict standards of the European Union’s current Waste Incineration

21

Directive. The facility must operate under an Environment Permit and this was issued by the Environment Agency in 2010.

Representatives of the company developing the SERC have attended a number of meetings of the Pilning and Severn Beach Parish Council to provide updates about the construction and operation of the energy recovery centre.

Readers of ‘In View’ can contact us at severnside‐[email protected] should they have any questions about the development.

Severn Beach Tang Soo Do is awarded ‘Club of the Year’ status!

Firstly a huge well done to Ashlee Williams, Ty Ellicott, Star Linton, Ruby Rogers, Bailey Rixon, Talitha Ryall and Faustina Smalinskate on their gradings, achieving their next belts. They were fantastic and are one step closer to their goals. Now the year has drawn to a close, I have a huge announcement to make of which I am extremely proud. Every year our organisation has an award ceremony, where they honour individual clubs ‘Most Improved Student’ amongst other awards such as Instructor of the Year, Black Belt of the Year and Club of the Year. This year my ‘Most Improved Student’ went to Talitha Ryall. I’m sure those who know her appreciate how hard she has worked, and how much karate has improved her wellbeing. For those that don’t, Talitha has a variety of ‘challenges’ both mental and physical. For some people the thought of her doing karate is just ‘absurd’. However, this little 8 year old does not give up. I wish that all people had the same outlook on life as this little girl, who graded for her first belt in

November achieving ‘A’ grades. She may not be the most agile, quickest or strongest but in the spirit of our club her attitude and determination knows no boundaries. I was honoured to present her with this award, which was most deserved. I hope this is inspiration to all of you who think you are maybe too ‘old’, too ‘unfit’ or simply ‘not healthy enough’ because I have an 8 year old student who battles through everything. Well done Tali. In addition to this award, Severn Beach has never been nominated for anything before. We have always been the ‘small’ club in the ‘outback’ of Bristol. This year the club has grown from just 5 students to averaging 20 students, and we want to keep growing! We have created Interclub and Open Champions. We have sent students to the World Championships. We also attended the Easter Compton Carnival and did a demonstration. At the award ceremony I was honoured and proud to have been nominated for ‘Club of the Year’. We were ecstatic to have been awarded this prize also. We can now claim that we are 2015 Club of the Year for Dragon Tang Soo Do. The reason we won is due to the students

23

efforts, not just mine. I am so proud of them. Next up, I was in total shock to first be nominated and win ‘Instructor of the Year’. My first full year as instructor and the masters of the association nominating me for this award is overwhelming. I was honoured to have received this award and be now known as ‘Instructor of the Year’. Of course, my students demanded I should have won anyway – but to be nominated by other instructors and masters is a wonderful and emotional experience. Thank you to my wonderful students making my instructing worth it.

I just want to say a very Happy New Year to all my wonderful students and their families. We have a lot to look forward to in 2016, and I look forward to seeing all my ninjas taking their next steps. On behalf of the club, my black belts – Pam and Alex and the rest of the association “ All the best for 2016, and well done to my students once again”.

GeorgieInstructor (of the Year!)

Pilning & Severn Beach WI

Trip to Frankfurt Christmas Market, Birmingham. On 24th November 2015, seven of our Members along with many others from around the Federation area, travelled to the Birmingham Christmas Market. We arrived at around 10.45am to a very cold day, but thankfully no rain, until that is, it was almost time to head back to the Coaches at 4.30p.m.We were so lucky. What a wonderful Market, numerous stalls with gifts of all kinds, plenty of eating and drinking places, music, lights and various other activities going on all around. We also had time to visit the shops if we wanted and the magnificent Library which was close by. A most enjoyable day was had by all. December 2015 MeetingThis Meeting was well attended by both our own Members and visiting Members from the Severn Bridge Group. It was a fun day, starting with a very quick Business Meeting and followed, initially by Roy Edwardes and his son Jonathan who had very kindly stepped in at the last moment when our nominated Speaker was unable to attend. Firstly Jonathan told us about the St. Peters Church organ which is at present away being refurbished. Several people had made a visit to the workshop recently to see how things were progressing and Jonathan had managed to record some music whilst he was there, this

PILNING & SEVERN BEACH W.I. October brought us to our Annual General Meeting, and election of Officers and Committee. Carl Sheddon from Trading Standards came to inform us of the changes recently introduced in connection with the Rights of Consumers. You now have 14 days to cancel a contract instead of the previous seven days. Unfortunately, milk deliveries, paper rounds and time-share agreements are not included. They co-operate with DEFRA, Police, Inland Revenue and Primary Care Trusts. Anything suspicious should be notified to them with a photograph or car registration number. Some interesting information. A good Federation Annual General Meeting was held at Weston-super-Mare in September and enjoyed by three members who attended. The Knitters’ Coffee Morning on 1st October was attended by 7 visitors and 12 members. There are also two events in November where some members will be present. Plans are being set up for our post Christmas Lunch in early January. Please ring 01454 631170 for any further information regarding our meetings on 3rd Wednesday of the month at Mafeking Hall, Pilning.

he played back to us and on behalf of everyone I must say it sounded wonderful. Roy then informed us that over the years he had always taken a keen interest in writing poems, he and Jonathan read the first poem about Brunel’s statue on Paddington Station. Trains are a subject we all now know Roy has knowledge about and enjoys greatly. Unfortunately Jonathan had to leave us at this point so Roy filled in the hour or so by entertaining us by alternately reciting one of his poems and then getting us all to sing a carol, he had thoughtfully supplied us all with song sheets and Sharon Edwardes had recorded the carols so we were able to join in and sing with gusto. It was a lovely atmosphere and the time was enjoyed by all. We appreciate and thank him for filling in at short notice, his poems are great by the way.

It was then time to sit and enjoy lunch, and by golly, what a spread our Members managed to put on again, it was fantastic. Lots of salads and savouries followed by the most delicious dessert, coffee and After Eight Mints - if you dared!! Thanks go to all our Members for yet another splendid effort. Happy New Year to One and All.
