Our Class Trip
By Room 5
The Albatross ColonyThe lighthouse at Taiaroa Heads is the 4th oldest in NZ.
Our very own albatross! An albatrosses wing span is 3 metres! They use their wings to glide through the air.
We climbed a hill to the observatory. We saw 3 chicks sitting on nests. They were waiting for their Mum or Dad to return with food. We we also lucky to see one adult bird flying!
A Dark TunnelWe followed the guide through the tunnel looking for the disappearing gun!
Ella became Sir William JervoisHe declared the Russians were going to invade so the disappearing gun was built to protect the people.
Ranger FinderIt was the ranger finder’s job to report of any approaching danger.
No Danger! We looked for any danger but could only see mist.
The Disappearing Gun We finally found the disappearing gun, it was enormous!
We tried to aim the gun at Tony! The gun hides in a pit, it comes out to fire, then hides again, that way the enemy does not know where the fire has come from.
The Model
The model showed us how the disappearing gun worked.
Soldier DisplaysThere was a lot of displays to show us what life was like for the soldiers.
We learnt a lot from the displays.
Back down the hillWe were told there was a jail at the bottom!
The jail was great until we were locked inside!
We had so much fun at the albatross colony!
We are so lucky to have the albatross living so close to us on the Otago Peninsula.
The Otakau Marae
We waited and listened at the gate for the lady to welcome us on with a call.
After the formal powhiri we enjoyed some kai together.
A marae is a special place where people gather and enjoy being together. We were made to feel very welcome.
Inside the church
Doug told us some traditional Maori stories.
Inside the museum we saw moa bones and greenstone!
Thank you for such a wonderful experience!
We all enjoyed the day!
