Dear Parents/Caregivers, Class formation for 2013 We are currently in the process of creating classes for 2013. We anticipate that there will be 22 classes next year, the same number as this year. PSSA Information & Selection Policy – Year 2

Hotmail addresses We have become aware that some of our community members have not received our emails or newsletters. What has happened is that some School-based staff responded to phishing emails which solicit usernames and passwords and these accounts were then hijacked to send over one million spam messages. This caused the Department’s email servers to be blacklisted and stops Hotmail accounts etc. from being able to receive our email messages. At this point in time we haven’t received any indication when this situation will be resolved. Helping your child choose right from wrong In a fascinating podcast broadcaster James O'Loghlin talks to Dr Simon Longstaff from the St James Ethics Centre about how to raise ethically aware children. Ideas discussed include getting involved with your child’s school, providing some well-defined boundaries, knowing how to talk to your child and being a role model at home. You can find out more information at http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/wellbeing/development/helping-your-child-choose-right-from-wrong. Christmas carols I would like to invite the school community and their friends and relatives to the P&C Christmas Carols Night on Friday, 14 December. There will be numerous stalls where you can purchase that special gift, a special performance by our award winning band and why not join our choir in the singing of a few carols. This is the last P&C event for the year so come along, enjoy a sausage sizzle, buy a special gift, purchase a raffle ticket, relax and have fun with other parents in your child’s class and at the same time help support our school. The evening begins at 5pm. I look forward to seeing you there. Hundreds of holiday activities There's no time to be bored these school holidays when you have Go Play's list of family and budget–friendly activities at your fingertips. Take a look at the calendar of events, or download the free Go Play app for ideas in an instant. Elanora Heights Community

Preschool would like to thank

Frances and the members of the

Elanora School Band who played carols at our Christmas concert on Sunday, 9th

December.

It was wonderful to listen to and to see so many of our ex-students.

Thank you to Mr. Gillespie and the families for supporting our end of year

Christmas concert.

Merry Christmas from the staff and parents of Elanora Preschool

Many thanks

Gala Night What a night of entertainment. We had 57 band students and 10 guitarists performing on the night. All the bands and guitarists performed way above expectation. The Senior Band and Stage Band were in scintillating form and at the peak of their powers. They really should charge for admission. They are hot, hot, hot! The Junior Band impressed with a repertoire of music that did not include the school song or national anthem. Bravo, you have made great strides. The Juniors double billing with Seniors playing Star Wars was a highlight of the evening. The (mainly) very young group of guitarists had their first big performance and to perform for such a large group of adults was huge achievement and a big thrill in their short musical careers. A huge thank you to Frances for all her hard work extracting every last ounce of musical energy out of these extraordinary students, particularly after a pretty gruelling run of performance commitments for the Seniors and new pieces for the Juniors. And to Mr O’Reilly, a huge thank you as well, for setting up and striking down the Hall’s seating.

Upcoming Events Carols Night, Friday, 14 December from 5.30pm. The P&C Social Committee have gone berserk. There are plenty of stalls for last minute Christmas shopping, raffles galore, the Mars trip is off now as life was found there and our own species may compare unfavourably with theirs, and way too many other things to mention. This promises to be a night of even greater magnificence than reported last week and not to be missed. We also encourage parents, friends, teachers, anyone, who are handy with an instrument or fine of voice to join the Band to play or sing. This is great night to let it all hang out and have some fun. The Band will be joined by the school choirs and will play two blocks, one at 5.30pm and one at 6.30pm to extend the fun and entertainment a little longer. New Band Students for 2013 Emails were sent last week confirming instrument choice for those who attended assessments. Students who expressed interest but failed to attend the assessment were also emailed and offered alternative assessment dates. Thank you to all who have replied. If you have not replied or you have not been assessed, the pre-enrolment will nominate the impression formed by the Band Director of your instrument of choice or your first choice of instrument, respectively. At the time of writing the Band does not have email addresses of the families of 3 students who were assessed without paperwork. If you intend to proceed please advise me by Wednesday of your contact details so we can issue a pre-enrolment form and a deposit invoice. Pre-enrolment forms and invoices for Beginner’s deposits were sent this week and the deposit will be deducted from Term 1 Band fees. The fee is forfeited if you do not proceed with enrolment. Enrolment forms and Term 1 fees will be issued after the formation of classes in 2013. If you decide not to pre-enrol this year and apply next year (and we have a place available) a $100 late enrolment surcharge applies to Term 1 Band Fees. There are no ifs, buts or maybes with this surcharge. Please be aware that pre-enrolments and payment of the deposit for next year’s music program MUST be completed by Friday 14 December. There will be a Beginners Tutorial group made up new Band students for Terms 1 and 2. These students will form a Junior Band in Terms 3 and 4. This year’s Junior Band will split into two groups and the grouping will be determined by way of audition. Some students will join the Senior Band and some join the Intermediate Band. All Junior Band parents were advised by email of audition arrangements and if you have not received a message please email me at: [email protected] The Senior Band will roll on as usual and a Stage Band will form at the earliest opportunity, Term 1.

Tentative rehearsal times for Terms 1 and 2 in 2013 are: Tuesday am: Senior Band: Brass Tuesday pm: 3.15pm to 4.15pm, Intermediate Band Wednesday am: Senior Band: Woodwind Thursday pm: 3pm to 4pm Intermediate Band 4pm to 5pm Senior Band Combined Rehearsal (time change affects Senior

brass only) 5pm to 5.30pm Stage Band These times will be confirmed after we have finalised the composition of each Band. Rehearsal times for Terms 3 and 4 will be advised as early as possible in Term 1. Warringah Mall Performance Bus Fare Some students attempted to pay the fare directly to me immediately prior to the trip. I was unable to accept payment due to other commitments and lack of change. If you have not paid please place $10.00 in a sealed envelope with your child’s name written on the outside and deposit in the Band letterbox in the school admin office. Congratulations Georgia P (6R) and Bella D (5E) have been invited to join the NSSWE Junior wind ensemble for 2013 after successfully auditioning a month or so ago. Congratulations Georgia and Bella, a magnificent achievement.

CANTEEN NEWS

Below is the roster for the next two weeks. We are still in need of helpers on a few days, if you are able to help out, please call on the number below or drop by, it would be much appreciated. The canteen cannot operate without our wonderful volunteers & we really do appreciate you giving your precious time. Our “Christmas Fun Day” last Tuesday was a huge success. Thank you to my wonderful helpers: Susie W, Angie K, Lou E, Yvette B, Kate H, Kate C, Anthea D & to Martha L for again making the Christmas Crackle Bars, & to all who ordered. The day was definitely enjoyed by all the children. Thank you also for getting your orders in & supporting your canteen. Please note that the canteen will be open on the last day of school (for the students), next Wednesday, however, for COUNTER SERVICE ONLY – NO LUNCH ORDERS ON THIS DAY. Also, as it is the end of the year, stock is being run down & some items will be unavailable over the next two weeks & substitutes will be offered where this occurs.

Sadly, our much loved treasurer, Yvette, will be finishing up at the end of this year after three years’ service & we will be in need of a new treasurer for our Canteen Committee. Yvette is happy to discuss what is involved with anyone who may be interested. You can contact me on the phone number below or in the canteen to discuss further. We do strongly rely on our wonderful volunteers in order to operate the school’s canteen & couldn’t run without your help. We do appreciate you giving your precious time. Thanks, Wendy.
