My Life may not be perfect, but I am blessed. Whenever I receive an email from my cousin in St. Paul, there is a quote at the bottom, of which the title of this week’s column is one part. The full quote is: “I have seen better days, but I’ve also seen worse. I don’t have every-thing I want, but I do have all I need. I wake up with some aches and pains, but I do wake up. My life may not be per-fect, but I am blessed.” Gary was married to my second cousin, who passed away about three years ago. He is a retired barber and cuts my hair when I go back to St. Paul for a visit. He also cuts my brother’s when Dan allows him to do so. You may have noticed he wears his hair longer than I do. Gary is a very faithful Catholic and we all miss my cousin a great deal. The quote appeared on all his emails shortly after her death. Now Gary has some health issues and the quote still appears. I don’t know where he got it, but it is very thought provoking and reminds me of many of our parish family who face challenges large and small with a certain degree of faith, courage and hope. Our lives may not be perfect, but can’t we still state with some con-fidence and in all humility, “we are blessed?” Gary would seem to think so. Many of our parishioners would as well. That in itself, is a blessing, for I believe considering oneself “blessed” is contagious and fills our community with grati-tude. It also motivates our understanding of stewardship as a way of life. There, I said it again! It won’t be the last time you hear it. It defines my life as a Catholic, a Christian and a child of God as well as yours. Over the years, Gary has cut hair for the famous, not so famous, and Cousins Dave and Dan Zimmer. But, his tal-ents go far beyond the clippers and scissors. He creates the most beautiful Rosaries, using precious stones, gems, and crystals. I have the one he made my mom. He is faithful to his parish church and visiting the grave of his wife numer-ous times throughout the week. He often requests masses to be said for customers and friends who have passed away because he believes it is the best he can give to those he has been blessed to know. Life is not perfect, but he knows and believes he is blessed. He inspires me and I am happy to introduce him to you, if only in part. But that is what we do, if we believe we are truly blessed. It may be the ideal sentiment for this third week of Easter. After all the disciples had been through, belief in the resur-rection of Jesus Christ was now their blessing and ours. The gospel account recalls the disciple’s encounter with Christ and allows “their hearts to burn” with the blessedness of faith. Can we not also say with conviction that our hearts burn when we hear the Word of God and are fed with his Body and Blood? No matter what kind of “hand” life deals us, can we say with some certainty, “I am blessed?” Last week, we celebrated “Divine Mercy” Sunday recognizing the mercy of God is our greatest blessing in this life and the next. This week we continue our celebration of faith in the resurrection; first our Lord’s and then ours.

This life, here and now, is not perfect, by any means. But if we know that, no matter what, we are blessed. We have a better chance of living a better and holier life now; anticipating a life to come that will be perfect in every way.

Protection of Children and Young People: Each year the US Catholic Conference of Bishops in the Char-ter for the Protection of Children and Young People require that our Catholic schools and faith formation programs offer training for all children about personal safety. This year St. Anthony, St. Paul and St. Katherine will meet this requirement as grades K-12 will view a DVD entitled Smart Choices, Strong Voices: How to Honor Your Instincts to Stay Safe (grades K-6) and Personal Power: A Gut Check on Safety (grades 7-12). Please refer to the diocesan website: Bismarckdiocese.com for training or any other information on the Safe Environment Program.

Online Videos by Bishop Kagan Bishop Kagan will be offering a series of short, online videos during the upcoming Easter season as a post-bap-tismal catechesis or “mystagogia” for those who are be-ing initiated into the Church at Easter. By delivering these instructions on the Christian life in this digital format, it is hoped that his message might be more widely received across the diocese not just by those who are newly-baptized or received into full communion, but by all who seek to grow deeper in their Catholic faith. All can benefit from these teachings of Bishop Kagan on the sacraments and other topics that he feels are important for every newly-initiated Catholic to know. To receive catechesis directly from the local bishop himself in the Easter season is a very ancient tradition in the Church. One short video is posted on the diocesan website, www.bismarckdiocese.com each Wednesday morning of the Easter season, which began Wednesday, April 4. They can be found under Bishop Kagan’s “Faith Matters Weekly Videos” tab. Each video will be archived there for several weeks, in case an episode was missed. The videos will also be available through our social media platforms.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION The final line of the First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles is, “Re-pent, therefore, that your sins may be wiped away.” This is part of a message which Peter evidently often stated as he evangelized and spread the word about the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Penance, repentance, is an impor-tant part of our Catholic faith. One of our seven Sacraments, there is much in Church doctrine about the impor-tance of this sacrament. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#1424) it states, “It is called the sacrament of con-fession, since the disclosure or confession of sins to a priest is an essential element. In a profound sense it is also a “con-fession” — acknowledgement and praise — of the holiness of God and of His mercy toward sinful men and women.” When St. Peter was speaking and used the term “wiped away,” that had more meaning to the people of his time. Imagine if sins were listed on a document in ink. In an-cient times the ink had no acid content, and thus it could be

Sunday Readings and Backgrounds3rd Sunday of Easter • Week of April 15, 2018

Reading I : Acts 3:13-15, 17-19God raised Christ from the dead.• In the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Peter

explains that Jesus is the fulfillment of the ancient messianic promises.

• Jesus, the Messiah, who died and was raised to new life, brought a new life of peace and right relationship with God.

• Through Jesus, God’s merciful love is available to all those who seek it.

Reading II : 1 John 2:1-5Whoever keeps God’s word has love made perfect.• The first part of the second reading reminds

believers that sin still exists in the world.• Believers must walk in light because God is light.• Christ, who lives in a totally loving relationship

with the Father, is also the Advocate who pleads our cause with the Father.

Gospel : Luke 24:35-48He stood in their midst.• The author of today’s Gospel attempts to tell us

that Jesus’ resurrection involves the whole person, body and spirit.

• After his resurrection, when Jesus eats with the disciples, they recognize him in the breaking of bread.

• Life in Christ is a life of forgiveness and peace.
