Stewardship: mission impossible? In 1966 until 1973, a popular TV series aired called, “Mission Impossible.” The plot line was described in this fashion: An elite covert operations unit carries out highly sensitive missions subject to official denial in the event of failure, death or capture. Each episode demonstrated how an impossible mission became possible and success-ful. Later, Hollywood took the idea and made full length feature films with the same title and story line. I dare to say, the idea was not original. Perhaps some of the early Church thought at times, the mission was impossible. Jesus thought just the opposite and taught all things are possible with God. Today, I regard the stewardship way of life as the essen-tial mission of the Church. It is not original. Jesus defined the mission of the Church in similar terms. Therefore, un-derstanding our mission is important. Believing our mis-sion as a Catholic Church is possible with the gifts we have been given by God, which have been used to build up the Body of Christ – the Church. Our mission must be done because we have been invited to do so. The beginning of each episode of the television series showed a recording identifying the mission needing to be done. The episode began with these words, “Your mission, should you choose to accept it…” The episode would then tell the story of how things thought to be impossible were possible when time, talent and treasure were used to make it happen. Perhaps you can see where this is going. And if you do, then you already know stewardship is a way of life in our homes, parishes, workplaces, schools and even personal lives. Stewardship is not mission impossible. For with the help of God and our willingness to embrace stewardship, this way of life is possible and necessary to our spiritual health and the well-being. Stewardship is what discipleship is made of. Our call to be a disciple of Jesus Christ contin-ues at each and every moment of the day as we choose to use our time, talent and treasure to be the Church we are called to be. We are called to this mission by the Lord him-self. And, those he calls continue to lead the Church and advance its mission. I suppose one could think of the early Christian Church in the same way; however, the mission of the Church Jesus came to establish wasn’t anything impossible. As with the old television show, the early Christian church faced chal-lenges, threats, extermination attempts, persecution and death. But, the Church endured, thrived and grew into the Universal Catholic Church it is today. Your mission, should you choose to accept it is to open yourself to the stewardship way of life. It will take some time and patience to do so, and the choice is always yours. But, should you be tempted to think stewardship is mission impossible, you may be ignoring or running away from au-thentic discipleship and the needs of our Church. Our par-

ish stories all began with the mission of discipleship. We are the next episode or chapter written at this time in our history. May God bless our efforts and may this moment in our time be called, “Stewardship: All things are possible.” It is an episode that continues the good work which has begun and always has a happy ending. Fr. Dave

Elevator Update Our elevator has been out of order since the Christmas blizzard. Lightning from the storm ruined the circuit board. The cost-to-date of repairs is over $6,500. Replacement parts have been ordered. We appreciate your patience as we address this issue.

OUR CHILDREN NEED YOUR PRAYERS! Some of our students are preparing for their First Holy Communion and the Sacrament of Confir-mation and they need your prayers! We have pre-pared individual envelopes with the name of a child who is preparing for either First Holy Communion or Confirmation and placed them in a basket in the gathering area of church. If you are willing to take a child under your “prayer wings” to pray for and possibly mentor, please take an envelope and begin praying for that particular child. The envelopes are marked “BOY” or “GIRL.” More information is in-cluded in each envelope. For any questions or con-cerns, please call the parish office. Thank you for your prayers!

Synod SnippetsBy Fr. Jason Signalness

In this week’s column, I discuss Chapter 3, Section IV of the Synod Directory, a section which contains regula-tions on the Most Holy Eucharist. There are quite a few statutes of interest to laypersons in this section. The section begins by reminding us we have an obliga-tion to attend Sunday Mass. To freely skip Mass on a week-end or holy day of obligation is a grave sin and puts one at risk of an eternity in hell. If someone thinks that sounds harsh, perhaps they do not understand what the Mass is! We must never willingly skip Mass. That said, there is a provision for difficult situations. If someone knows they will be unable to get to Mass for some serious reason, they can contact their pastor and ask him to give permission, for a single time, to miss Mass. It goes without saying that those in nursing homes or trapped behind enormous snow drifts out in the country do not sin if they can’t attend. Statute 117 explains that Mass and Eucharistic adora-tion offered for the public cannot take place outside of a church, chapel or oratory without the permission of the bishop. Statute 118 explains that priests can celebrate at most two Masses on a weekday and three on a Sunday or holy day of obligation. However, the rules make it clear that Masses must not be needlessly multiplied. If one Mass is sufficient to serve the true needs of the people in a week-end, that is all a priest is expected to offer. And, I would add, multiple Masses are much more difficult for a parish to “staff” with musicians, lectors, altar servers, etc., and to celebrate well, than one Mass is. Statute 120 reminds us that, among other things, Catho-lics must not receive Holy Communion in non-Catholic faith communities. Likewise, only Catholics can receive Holy Communion from a Catholic minister. Anyone is welcome to attend Mass, but only Catholics who feel they are in a state of grace should come forward to receive Communion. This statute also explains we are to observe the Eucha-ristic fast. This means we are not to eat or drink anything, except for water and medicine, during the hour prior to receiving Holy Communion. The infirm, and those who care for them, do not have to observe this rule. This also means, as is explicitly mentioned in the statute, that “the chewing of gum is forbidden during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.” It is absolutely unacceptable to take Commu-nion into one’s mouth while chewing gum. This is com-mon sense, but I have seen it many times. One would not eat supper while chewing gum. Why would one receive our Lord in that way? These rules exist to help us prepare well, to build up a little “hunger” for Jesus, and to receive him in a reverent manner. While statute 120 reminds us to prepare well to receive Communion, statute 122 reminds us that the faithful ought to “remain after Mass for at least a brief period of thanks-

vocation view— God promises never to forget us. If you feel distant from God, who had moved? Seek a closer relation-ship with God and all that you need will be given to you. (Isaiah 49:14-15 & Matthew 6:24-34)

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION St. Paul had both a deep understanding and appreciation for stewardship — what it meant to be a good steward. In his First Letter to the Corinthians, our Second Reading on this last Sunday in Ordinary Time before Lent begins, Paul states eloquently, “Thus should one regard us: as ser-vants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.” As is the case with all Holy Scripture, Paul is writing to more than the Corinthians; he is writing to each of us as well. Paul’s understanding of what a steward was is that he manages the household of God. Managing included preserv-ing and protecting. We are also to be servants (disciples) of Christ, and Paul goes on to say that a servant steward must be trustworthy. To Paul that meant we are to be faithful in order to be good disciples. There are several difficulties for us in all of those terms and requirements: being stewards, being servants, and being faithful. They mean that we have to place ourselves second to others and second most of all to Christ our Savior. We tend to question this and tend to have strong feelings of in-dependence. That is what we learn from our society. Yet, to be a steward like Paul requires us to be humble and accept-ing. That may be our greatest test. St. Augustine wrote, “What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of others.” That, too, is stewardship.

Continued from page 4 SYNODgiving after receiving Holy Communion in order that they may properly honor their Eucharistic Guest and obtain for their souls the richest spiritual fruits of the Sacrament.” One should never leave Mass early, before the final blessing and closing hymn. Ideally, we should even remain a few minutes after to express our gratitude to God for so great a gift as the Eucharist, which is at that time within our very bodies. This is a perennial complaint I hear at the Church of St. Michael, by the way. Some would like to spend this time in prayer, but others visit very loudly, in the church, immediately after Mass. That social time is important, but we really do need a few minutes of quiet after Mass is concluded. The section closes with reminders: A person can receive Holy Communion twice in a day, so long as the second time is during Mass. We are reminded that we have an “obligation” to receive Viaticum (Holy Communion) if we are in danger of death. In other words, if someone in your family is seriously ill, they should go to Confession, receive the Anointing of the Sick, and receive Holy Communion, if possible. That means the priest should be called sooner rather than later if someone is seriously ill. Lastly, we are reminded we all have an “Easter duty” to go to Confession and receive Holy Communion, and that we can fulfill this duty anytime from the First Sunday of Lent until the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity each year (March 5-June 11, 2017).
