direcTed by linda roberTSInspired by a true story, this moving drama follows a group called the Women of Lockerbie, who are determined to turn an act of hatred into an act of love. The story begins with a couple trying to gain closure after the death of their son in the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. They encounter the women of Lockerbie, who want to wash the clothes of the dead and return them to the victim’s families. Written in the structure of a Greek tragedy, it is a poetic drama about the triumph of love over hate. Brevoort has created a powerful reminder that air disaster victims include more than the people who fall from the sky — there are also the people who miss them and the people who find them.

direcTed by rick SynderDirected by TWS Artistic Director and Steppenwolf Ensemble member Rick SnyderIt’s 1939, and legendary Hollywood producer David O. Selznick has a problem. He has just fired the director of Gone with the Wind and the script is on its umpteenth version. He desperately needs a new director and writerimmediately. His solution? Fire the director, pull Victor Fleming off The Wizard of Oz, and lock himself, Fleming, and script doctor Ben Hecht in his office for five days until they have a screenplay. With only peanuts and bananas to sustain them, they work through and act out Margaret Mitchell’s bestseller and in the process make movie history.

Dracula Holiday show

Dracula

direcTed by david knezzBased on the motion picture A Christmas Story.

Jean Shepherd’s memoir of growing up in the Midwest in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself. The consistent response: “You’ll shoot your eye out.” All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here including the family’s temperamental exploding furnace, the boys’ experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost, Ralphie’s father winning a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a net stocking, Ralphie’s fantasy scenarios and more.

direcTed by rick SynderDirected by TWS Artistic Director and Steppenwolf Ensemble member Rick Snyder

“I want your fear. For your fear, like a current, rushes through your body. Your fear makes your heart pound; it renders your veins rich and full. Your fear hemorrhages deliciously within you.” Wicked and seductive, the original bloodsucker is back in a fresh, faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker’s horrific tale. The Count has taken residence in London, and only Professor Van Helsing understands the extent of the terror that is about to be unleashed. Transported back to a time where legend and science contend for supremacy, this story will keep your heart beating and blood pumping. Rich with both humor and horror, this play paints a wickedly theatrical picture of Stoker’s famous vampire just in time for Halloween.

The story begins with a common situation - that of a missing fifty dollar bill - and spins it into intriguing questions of probability, chance and the complexities of musical composition. A man programs a computer to compose music at random, but in the middle of all the binary coin-tossing, the computer gives him much more than he asked for. A concurrent mystery surrounds several people who find themselves suspecting and distrusting each other over the issue of the lost or possibly stolen fifty dollar bill. Originally produced at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre, Ghost in the Machine is an entertaining and brisk mix of sex, mystery and metaphysics.

direcTed by greg kolackIn this shaggy-dog comedy by A.R. Gurney (Love Letters), the long-married Greg and Kate adopt a street-smart mutt named Sylvia after their kids have grown up and moved out. But Sylvia soon turns into a bone of contention for the empty-nesters, as Kate feels that she is losing Greg to his adoring new best friend. This imaginative take on midlife crisis leads to lots of laughs and thoughtful insights on love, marriage and jealousy. With their marriage in the balance, a series of hilarious and touching complications encourages Greg and Kate to compromise. If all goes well, Sylvia just might become a bone-a-fide member of the family, freshly healed by puppy love.

direcTed by ed WavakMichael Starkwedder encounters all the problems that rural Wales is known for: Ditches adjacent to poorly-lit roads, a corpse in the first house you visit, and a woman standing over it with a gun. But the woman is dazed and her confession unconvincing, so the unexpected guest decides to help her and blame the murder on an intruder. Later, the police discover clues that point to a man who died two years previously and a Pandora’s box of loves and hates, suspicions and intrigues are opened to the night air. A thriller as well as a puzzler, this classic whodunit by England’s mystery queen promises a happy immersion in all the fun of untangling the intrigue.

This is the poignant story of Mrs. Watts, an aging widow living with her son and daughter-in-law in a three-room flat in Houston, Texas. Fearing that her presence may be an imposition on others, Mrs. Watts imagines that if she can get away and return to her old home in the town of Bountiful, she is sure to regain her strength, dignity and peace of mind. She proceeds to Bountiful and makes a lonely pilgrimage to the scene of her old home. The results are both brilliantly life-affirming and heartbreaking in one of legendary playwright Horton Foote’s most beloved works. Travel with her in this delicately beautiful play by the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer whose work has enriched and mesmerized its audiences.

Now in its 18th year, the TWS Theatre Appreciation Workshop is offered twice a year. The multi-session workshop covers a wide variety of topics such as comedies and farces, Pulitzer Prize-winning plays, Shakespeare plays, and plays inspired by other art. In addition, there are occasional panel discussions with TWS designers of costumes, make-up, props, set design/construction, lighting, sound, directing or stage managing. Like our Cattell Series, this outreach program is free and open to the public.

The TWS Cattell Series is a free, ongoing community program featuring Chicago-area theatre professionals in a conversational exchange about the craft of theatre. Past guests have included actor Mike Nussbaum, Shakespeare scholar Dr. David Bevington, former Tribune critic Richard Christiansen, Executive Director Timothy Evans from Northlight Theatre, Actor-Producer-Director Tony Mockus and many more. The Cattell Series is held throughout the season and is free and open to the public. Watch our web site for details of upcoming events.

“TWS is like a small university. The number of workshops, lectures and showcases available, many of them free, means there’s always something going on. You learn so much about the magic of theatre.”

– Larry F.

“I’ve been a TWS Active member for 25 years. I have never belonged to such a welcoming, inclusive group. It’s become a second home.”

Arietty longs for grown up adventures, but when she and her family

by kari MargoliSThe story begins with Galileo as a young boy who is inspired and

one of the world’s greatest scientists and remind audiences that

science and imagination go hand in hand.
