Edison added she thinks the company’s growth may have been a factor in getting contact-ed by show producers. In her twelve years with Bowlero, it went from owning five centers, acquired the AMF chain, then the Brunswick Recreation Centers, now owning over 300 centers.

In a character named Michelle, who in her words, is a “geeky ex court reporter who’s looking for a new job all filmed in a documentary about second careers.”

Edison shadows a center GM, a party coordinator, a lane server, and the head mechanic. She learns about them profes-sionally as well as personally, later encountering them as the CCO critiquing their job performances. I won’t spoil the twists and turns of the show, but regular viewers of UB won’t be too surprised.

Preliminary overnight Nielsen ratings posted on show-buzzdaily.com showed 2.6 mil-lion watched at least a portion of the program, trailing Game 5 of the NBA Finals on ABC with 5.3 million, even beating WWE Smackdown on Fox averaging 2.1 million viewers.

Although the recording of the show took place last fall shortly after Bowlero’s purchase of the PBA, the airing of the episode could not have been

######If you felt a wave of bowling

trying to ‘win the internet’ last week, you were not mistaken. First, Architectural Digest posted a YouTube video of tennis star Maria Sharapova’s Florida home. And, yes, it has a pair of lanes in the basement.

The Grand Slam winner says the lanes are the most surprising aspect of this home, because she claims not to be a bowler herself. Despite that claim, When Sharapova’s friends told her it’s a “profes-sional alley,” probably meaning professional sized alley, she took the liberty of inviting pros to come and bowl at her house. Cue the wave.

In the video, we get to see the narrow area where the lanes sit, acknowledging an earlier point about the plot of land being narrow as well and

how other architects had shown her lanes would fit well in that space. According to Sharapova, the only drawback was the noise of the falling pins and pinsetters (that isn’t too tough of a fix, really).

Bowlers, especially lefties, notice right away is the right lane has a wall immediately to the right of the 10-pin side gutter cap and gutter, making 7-pin conversions difficult. There is also a very expensive larger painting hanging by the foul line on that wall.

As a few pros and marketing folk chimed in on her “know-ing how to get a hold of me” claim (probably on Twitter), I wonder how this might work. It could. See the video for yourself here:

Odd thing is the video was posted in June 2019. Wish I knew why it took this long to find out Sharapova wanted pros to bowl in her basement.

######Another case of bowling

trying to win the internet came as the new World Bowling administrators posted a ques-tion on its Facebook page, and it’s not just any question.

They posed this pair of queries: “If you could change one rule in bowling, what would it be? Would you remove an existing one or add a new one?”

Tightening of pattern and topography specs, using one ball per game, and no outside coaching during competition, using only one hand deliveries, and using no wrist aids, were among those suggested.

Among some of the tongue in cheek answers were having the lead off guy buy beers for the night if he is late, and turn-ing off the foul lights because

they are expense to maintain and crossing the line benefits nobody. That was suggested by the guy who shot an 899 series last week.

######I was asked recently how

college bowling has changed since my days of the early 1980’s. After a chuckle while saying where do I start, my reply was it is a little louder, we sat down between frames, and had a lot more Baker system matches on flatter oil patterns. We also bowled mostly on wood lanes with beat up heads and inconsistent track areas and house shots with three-piece polyester equipment. Urethane was only months away in 1981, while two-piece equipment was four years away in 1984.

So, what did it look and feel like? For this week’s JPA Lost Classic, we go back to a national championship finals I wanted to post in the spring, but with the NCAA Women’s Bowling season starting on

October 1, now is as just as good a time.

Three women’s and three men’s teams made the show in a one-game Baker stepladder format, keeping with the four matches in a ninety minute show, standard at the time. From the old Red Carpet Celebrity Lanes in Milwaukee, here’s Duane Dow and Lomar Bowling Supply co-founder Loa Boxberger on the call for the Mizlou Television Network as the Wichita State win its first of eleven men’s national championships.

If you watch the entire men’s clip, found here (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=uuXfu9g 6F1Y&t=1534s), you’ll see a few familiar names, and a brief in-terview with the one and only Bill Lillard. The only clip of the 1980 women’s finals is part of a compilation of Eric Community College’s four titles, found here (https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=4stXGiON78E).

ment, “If you don’t like the weather in Texas, just wait a minute,” or something to that effect. When we landed in Dal-las on Sunday it was raining, with a threat of sleet. By the next morning it was snowing and before I left later in the week we had experienced 80 degree temperatures and a tornado warning.

When I arrived at the lanes with my bowling ball (yes, only one bowling ball) and rental shoes that I borrowed from L & L Lanes in Sebastopol, Califor-nia, the pressure was placed upon me from the first moment that I met Harry Golden, the

BILLY HARDWICK FORUMContinued from Page 1

PBA Tournament Director. Golden informed me that

I would need to get a haircut before the first qualifying round the next day (there was a requirement that hair could not go below the bottom of the collar at that time), and that I would need to purchase my own bowling shoes.

Luckily Bobby Meadows, an excellent bowler and the gen-eral manager of Jeanie Hulsey’s Triangle Bowl in nearby Arling-ton, Texas, overheard my plight and set me up with a local barber and a nice pair of Lind Bowling Shoes.

Somehow I managed to shrug all of that off and showed up the next day for the first 8 game qualifying round in a

The pairing could not have been better and I felt completely at home in the palatial Forum Bowl, owned by Ms. Hulsey, with chandeliers above every pair of lanes in the concourse area. What I was not comfort-able with was the automatic scoring, because I had never before bowled in a center with the giant new Brunswick Scor-

ing monsters that calculated scores across 4 lanes.

The worst part was the cur-sor on each lane that had to be moved to your particular slot before you bowled each time. Needless to say, with all of the aforementioned Harry “Goose” Golden pressure, and trying to

The 2019 champion upset the world’s best bowler, Jason Belmonte, to win a spot in the final four and subse-quently took down established stars Anthony Simonsen and Bill O’Neill to win the title.

concentrate on my own game, and the double jump rule that was new to me… I kept forget-ting to move the cursor to the appropriate slot!

I began the first game with 6 in a row, and yet another visit from Harry Golden. He informed me that my slacks, resembling a light blue denim material, were not proper apparel and that I could no longer wear them during competition. Thankfully I was allowed to finish the block, and as I looked to the next pair of lanes, I could not help but notice the piercing glare of Dan Roche and Earl Anthony, which was most likely the reason for Golden’s visit in the middle of the game.

In an April 1975 article in the Press Democrat (Santa Rosa, California) newspaper, sports writer Ralph Leef commented that the pro’s were

BILLY HARDWICK FORUMContinued from Page 3

ignoring my “double jump” courtesies, which allows one bowler from each adjoining pair of lanes to bowl before you can step upon the approach.

Leef recounts: “I guess it was really bothering me and Billy could see it,” said Wil-liams. Hardwick quickly put Dave at ease. “If anyone gives you a dirty look, give it right back,” Hardwick told Williams. “Don’t worry about these guys,” the master pro said.

Messrs. Hardwick and Con-ner must have been upset every time that I forgot to move the cursor to the proper position, but they never said a word and instead blamed the machines. They even invited me to have a beer with them after the squad was done (I had a Coke).

We all bowled well for the week, with Fred finishing in the top 24. As for me, I was in 32nd with eight games to go in the qualifying rounds (32 games), and didn’t even cash (80 places). I guess the “Golden Goose” pressure finally got to

me. Years later when I was with

Nationwide Bowling in the New York City area, I had three young college interns working for me and they were talking one day about Billy’s son Chris Hardwick of Comedy Central fame. I mentioned to them that I knew his father, and they begged me to get them auto-graphed pictures of Chris.

I called Billy at his “Billy Hardwick’s All Star Lanes” in Memphis, Tennessee, and after reminiscing about the automatic scoring debacle in Texas, he said that his son was in town and he would see what he could do about the photos.

Within a week I had three 8 x 10 glossies autographed by Chris Hardwick. I only wish now that I had asked Billy for a photo with his autograph, because he probably never knew how much I respected him and what he did for me at my very first PBA tournament at Forum Bowl.

But Moore's run of strikes ended in the final. He could not muster a double, as Hansen

marched to victory with a workmanlike clean game. Three 10-pin leaves were all that stood between him and the first seven strikes.

The longest WSOB ever is now complete. Jason Belmonte won the main event PBA World Championship at the event's original host, South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas, back in March before the event was halted due to COVID-19. The animal pattern events were picked up in Virginia with strict safety guidelines

including no fans on site. Sean Rash won the PBA Cheetah Championship, Belmonte the PBA Chameleon Championship and Hansen in the Scorpion.

Hansen, a right-hander, has been a PBA member since 2012, competing primarily in World Series PBA events because of the opportunities the WSOB presents with multiple events at one location. He won a PBA regional doubles title with Palermaa at the World Series in 2013, but this win on TV against a field as deep and strong as the 120 that entered WSOB XI could signal a new star.

Hansen did not earn enough PBA points in 2020 to qualify for the PBA Playoffs, the season-culminating event featuring the top 24 in season points which begins its exciting six-show run of survive-and-advance single-elimination matches this past Saturday at 8 pm ET on FOX.
