Once upon a time, two musicians fell in love. In the month we celebrate romance, Rembrandt spotlights one of music’s great love stories. Exchanging notes and meeting in secret, Robert and Clara married in defiance of Clara’s father. Their romance became the stuff of legend. Out of a marriage marked by both intense passion and tragedy came musical masterpieces. Discover the sounds of Clara and Robert Schumann—side by side—in The Schumanns’ Fairy Tale.

Our 2021-2022 season opener, Chiaroscuro, marks Sandra and Robert Morgan’s farewell performance with the ensemble. Written for Rembrandt’s 30th anniversary, we will present the world premiere of Stacy Garrop’s Chiaroscuro. Defined in art as a striking difference between dark and light, the remainder of the program embodies chiaroscuro from the emotional shifts of a Rachmaninov Trio to the youthful vigor of a Mendelssohn Piano Quartet.

A musical battle that went down in history as the “War of the Romantics,” pitted composers like Brahms, influenced by the legacy of Beethoven, against those of the New German School including Liszt, Wagner, and Felix Draeseke. Featuring French horn, experience a musical duel unlike any other. It is a fight not to be missed.

Our closing concert Souvenirs pays homage to treasured memories and discovers a new favorite in a clarinet quintet of Bernard Herrmann, a composer best known for his film music and long collaboration with movie director Alfred Hitchcock. The season closes by revisiting a cherished Tchaikovsky classic, “Souvenir de Florence,” and highlighting the virtuosity of Rembrandt Chamber Musicians.
