BBBBAGATELLEAGATELLEAGATELLEAGATELLE I I I INFRASTRUCTURENFRASTRUCTURENFRASTRUCTURENFRASTRUCTURE Over two successive weekends - amidst much publicity and excitement, the twenty-four 38ton precast beam elements spanning the dual carriageway of the M1 Highway were carefully placed into position. To ensure success of this criti-cal component of the works a high level of planning, a great deal of overtime commitment and co-ordination of road diversions, etc was required, along with a healthy dose of favourable weather conditions. All were well pleased and proud of the successful result.

Special mentions should be made of the teamwork, commitment and efforts of Rajen Gopaul, Ercole Concil, Roshan Dwarka and Zeid Joomratty in leading the way towards the achievement of the challenging goal set for the timely comple-tion of the infrastructure works. Anton

Due to change in design during construction, we were instructed to excavate deeper at some areas, thus involving additional cut and also had to carry out an additional platform for parking spaces. We managed well the deadlines and com-pleted the contract three weeks prior to the completion date. Ashvin

BBBBAGATELLEAGATELLEAGATELLEAGATELLE M M M MALLALLALLALL ANDANDANDAND H H H HOTELOTELOTELOTEL In order to meet the challenging task of completing the eighteen blocks, seven malls and the related ex-ternal works over a period spanning between 1 July and 29 September 2011, the works were split into four manageable zones. The construction of the so-called ‘big boxes’ housing the anchor tenants was entrusted to JJ François and Balloo Tookaram. Gianni Fokman heads-up the team progressing the works related to the main Malls forming the semi-circular access route and adjacent outer line shops; while Taf Mpata, the four inner blocks and the 30+ meter high Sugar Tower in the central “Old Town Square” Mall. The extensive external works were entrusted to Ra-jan Gopaul and his teams. Finally, the complex task of co-ordinating the various M&E Services are under the control of Ali Domah. The structural works are well progressed across 13 blocks, with wet trades and services following closely on 7 blocks and the first finishes set to commence shortly.

Just to add more excitement to the mix, we (in conjunction with our joint ven-ture partner, Cogir), have just embarked upon the construction of the upsized hotel and ancillary works. This is a 108 key business hotel with the top floor dedicated to offices, includes two lifts and an atrium in the central core. There remains a high probability that further works will shortly be added to the contract. With the commitment of the entire tea, we know that we are up to the challenge of delivering these prestigious works to the desired quality and on time. Anton

LLLLAAAA T T T TOURELLEOURELLEOURELLEOURELLE After months of negotiations, we were awarded the contract be-fore the closure in December 2010 and we started on site as from 10 January 2011. The project consists of 48 luxury apartments (or six Blocks of eight apartments each), construction of its swimming pool and other external site works. We are to proceed with only four blocks at this stage and we will be advised within the coming months whether to go ahead with the remaining two blocks. The biggest challenge on this particular job is the earthworks – the site is very restricted in terms of access and we have to carry out several platforms into the mountain and construct the retaining walls and drains both uphill and downhill prior to starting the building blocks. Ashvin

GGGGROSROSROSROS B B B BOISOISOISOIS We had a tough time tackling the job with regards to the frontage completion and grabo roads due to tight construction schedules and bad weather during the month of January. First milestone for plot B handover already met. We are now heading towards final completion by end of February. Let’s hope that the weather does-n’t affect the progress any more. We thank the team for the long hours spent on site in order to meet the tight Targets. Avinash

LLLLIFTINGIFTINGIFTINGIFTING & C & C & C & CRANERANERANERANE O O O OPERATIONSPERATIONSPERATIONSPERATIONS Lifting and crane operations are critical activities. Safe practices are of utmost importance as improper methods can lead to fatal accidents. We have during the past month been involved in lifting precast beams varying from 35 tons to 39 tons at Bagatelle “Dream Bridge” and Gorge Bridge Ring Rd with two mo-bile cranes working simultaneously. Risk assessment from day one is essential and regular tool box talks in view to create awareness amongst operators, banksmen and others working under suspended loads. Rehm Grinaker has recently organised a training session with an experienced tutor from Reunion Island and all participants from Site Engineers to Senior General Foremen gained a lot.

They seem to come out of the ‘war of the worlds’. These are the cranes that all day long seem to be actively shifting loads

on our sites at Bagatelle, Port Louis Ring Road and Terre Rouge Verdun. Operating these cranes is full of risk. In order to

mitigate these risks, RG called upon a specialist from Reunion Island to train our guys in ‘Rigging and Slinging’.
