though a few more stallholdersin the afternoon and eveningwould have been welcome. Theday ended on a rather sad note, however. At midnight the lasthelpers were leaving the field. Most of them had been theresince early that morning, andwould not be getting to bed foranother couple of hours. Then a small group of seem-ingly tough but inwardly child-ish and inadequate teenagerscould find nothing more toamuse themselves than toobstruct the people trying toclear up. They even put them-selves in danger by lying downin front of vehicles or jumpingon the bonnet of one of them. They smashed the window ofa caravan, and stole a bottle ofdrink from a car. Similarly, onSunday after every scrap oflitter had been picked up, leav-ing the ground in pristine con-dition, a group found ‘pleasure’in scattering some of thecontents of the skip around, finally setting it on fire in theevening. But the pleasuregained by such crowds ofpeople far outweighed theseirritations, and we look forwardto another successful day nextyear. For Gazette Advertising

We were very lucky with theweather on our trip toPaignton Zoo on Tuesday 15thJune and I must say it is thebest zoo I have seen. Havinghad three children of my ownI have been to quite a few butthis one seems to have theanimal’s best interest in mind. They have large enclosuresand the animals look to becontented. For anyone not keen on zoos,a little boy summed it up bysaying he had seen giraffes in

books and on television butdid not realise how big theywere or how long their ton-gues were. Did anybody seethe picture of the lioness andtawny owl in the Daily Mail? One thing I was disappointedin but had been warned of andthat was the flora and fauna. Iexpected it to be separate butthe greenhouses with the birdsin were very good. The next event in the Garden-ing Club is the quiz night atOtter Nurseries on Wednesday

Saturday 15th May was the night that we had been training forsince before Christmas. It was The Moonwalk, a 26.2 mile walkaround London, starting and ending at Hyde Park, walkingthrough the night. The money we raised goes to Breast Cancercharities and we were both very proud to be amongst the 15,000people that took part.We had great fun on the night and really enjoyed the vigoroustraining which paid off. We finished the walk in a good time andthere were no blisters or other injuries and we would be happyto do it all again! We feel that if we could do it, so could you! You need to registerearly if you are interested. You get lots of help and support withyour training etc. The support from friends and everyone whoknew we were doing the Moonwalk has been amazing. Thankyou so much to all of you.If you want more information about the Moonwalk check outthe website www.walkthewalk.orgPam Joy and Jennifer Webber

“What is happening aboutSainsburys?” is a question I amfrequently asked. Quite oftensomeone wants to know whenthe building work will comm-ence, and when the store willbe open. What better way tolet Ottery know the answers tothese questions, than to writean article for The Gazette?First of all some history: Sains-burys were granted planningpermission for a 20,000 sq ftstore by East Devon DistrictCouncil (EDDC) on 15thApril. Cllr David Cox and I(the EDDC Cllrs for OtteryTown), the EDDC shoppingconsultants (GVA Grimley),Ottery St Mary Town Council(OSMTC), and the EDDCplanning officers all felt that a20,000 sq ft store (representing70% of Ottery‘s retail space)was too large. English Heritageand EDDC‘s own ConservationOfficer also had concerns.Unfortunately the EDDCDevelopment ManagementCommittee (by seven votes tofive) ignored the arguments fora smaller store.Subsequently OSMTC, DavidCox and I were concernedabout the traffic impact of sucha large store; we feared thatOttery might become grid-locked. We therefore looked athow it might be possible to

What is happening about Sainsbury’s Store?

reduce the traffic impact. Oneof the measures we looked atwas the possibility of two-waytraffic at the western end ofHind Street, to reduce thecongestion we feared in BroadStreet. This would have allowedpeople from the west of Ottery(communities such as Broad-clyst, Rockbeare, West Hill andWhimple) to return homewithout having to go throughBroad Street. The additionalroad width necessary, couldhave been achieved by puttingthe pavement behind the wall.A meeting took place with theEDDC Planning Officer and theSainsburys traffic consultant. The traffic consultant insistedthat his report was robust, andinsisted that there would notbe severe traffic congestionresulting from store traffic. There was an unwillingness to

depart from the traffic reportand the planning conditionsagreed on 15 April. It was alsofelt that a two-way traffic flowwould have an adverse impacton some of the properties onthe south side of Hind Street, would be impractical, and therecould be safety implications. Asa result, consideration of theintroduction of two-way trafficin Hind Street is not to be pro-ceeded with (of course hadthere been a real possibility ofintroducing it, a key elementwould have been to consultwith local residents and bus-inesses). However we did get a commit-ment to look at upgrading thepedestrian crossing at theeastern end of Hind Street, andto look at other measures if thetraffic situation is worse thanpredicted after the store opens.Following the 15 April decisionseveral Ottery residents wroteto the Government Office ofthe South West (GOSW) askingthat the decision be “called-in”(in other words for the Gov-ernment to take the decision

away from EDDC). EnglishHeritage is understood to havemade a similar request toGOSW.When certain legal agreementshave been made between theplanning authority (EDDC) andthe applicants (Sainsbury) theplanning authority issues aDecision Notice to the app-licants. Issue of the DecisionNotice was held up because ofthe consideration of trafficimpact, and also because of theconsideration by GOSW. Inmid June GOSW advised thatthey had decided not to call theplanning application in. Issueof the Decision Notice is likelyto be at the end of June or earlyJuly. The next stage of theprocess is for the applicants toagree the conditions withEDDC. On completion of this– building can start! When building does commenceis, of course, up to Sainsburys. However it appears that theymay be in a position to do soin late summer. Interestingtimes await us in Ottery!Roger Giles

hand account of the accidentin the Exeter & PlymouthGazette. Although he made nodirect criticism of the road, theTrustees decided to borrowanother £1250 (£97,320today) for “improvements”. Income remained unimpressivehowever, much of it disappear-ing each year in maintenance. While Exeter was making £70per year per mile of its 147miles of turnpikes, Ottery/Sid-mouth was making only £19,dismal even for a rural turnpike. In 1865/6 the 21 year termgranted to the Trustees by the1844 Act expired - just at themoment the railway arrived atOttery, and the work to extendthe line to Sidmouth wasalready under way. In spite ofthis, the Trustees decided topress on with a renewal raisingthe tolls in the hope of betterreturns. By 1874 the railwayconnection to Sidmouth wasfinally completed, and inconsequence the Trust threw inthe towel with debts of£14,337/13s/0d (just over£1.1million in today’s money). At the Bowd Inn, just a shortway along the road to Sidmouthvia Bulverton, is a milestone -now almost the only reminderthat this route was once aturnpike, the last to be built inDevon. In 1844 parliamentpassed “An Act for making andmaintaining a Turnpike Roadfrom Sidmouth to Collumpton”and a group of trustees wasappointed to raise funds andcarry out the work. The hopewas to link Sidmouth andOttery with the Brunel’s newLondon to Exeter railway atHele near Bradninch. They bor-rowed over £5000 (about£400,000 in today’s money)and set to work at the Sid-mouth end.In year one they spent all theyhad raised and more (£5789)on the new road between

Sidmouth and Ottery - whichwould appear to be as far as itever got. Expenditure included£1005 for land purchase,£3568 on contractors, £300for the surveyor and £568 onlegal fees. The line of the new road fromOttery to Sidmouth follows anearlier road as far as Tipton, but then takes off in a newalignment for much of the restof its course. The section acrossthe Goyle at Tipton and uparound to Woods Farm rep-resented a significant engineer-ing challenge and must havecost a good deal of the cashraised - large embankmentscarry the road across the Goyleand support it as it skirtsaround the steeply sloping hilltowards Woods Farm. Theregularity with which the

modern road here is underrepair, is the result of a less thanthorough survey of the route.Despite today’s highway tech-nology bits of it still periodicallyslip down into the valley. In the summer of 1850, the Sid-mouth antiquarian PeterOrlando Hutchinson was on amailcoach from Sidmouth toOttery when the horses tookfright and the coach came togrief, hurling the outsidepassengers, including Hutchin-son, into the hedge. No one wasseriously hurt but shortlyafterwards he published a first-

Guides celebrate centenary in colourful floral styleThis year’s Ottery In Bloomtheme is based around the GirlGuides colours of blue andyellow with some pink. This isto celebrate the organisation’sCentenary Year. The Guides, once again helped to plant theupright containers at the Landof Cannan. The compost usedin the planters was providedby Otter Rotters. The flowerbeds, which have been passedback to Ottery Town Councilcontrol from EDDC, wereplanted by St Loyes Enter-prises. The job of watering, deadheading and weeding all of theplanters in the town and theflower beds is carried out byvolunteers. There is no formalstructure or anyone withoverall responsibility. Chair-man of Ottery In Bloom, SarahClarke said “We rely on localpeople taking part and lookingafter the plants when they arepassing. This is not ‘someoneelse’s job’, so if you want themto stay looking nice - do some-thing to help!”. There arewater butts around the townwhich can be used, although abottle of water in a very dryplanter is better than nothing. The planters on St Savioursbridge will be put out soon andhave been provided by OtterNurseries and planted by stud-ents from the Kings School.

Ottery In Bloom are in theprocess of preparing theportfolio and presentation forthe South West In Bloom judg-ing. The portfolio is an excell-ent way to show case the townand the committee are keen toinclude any other projects thatare focused on improving ourtown in any way, not justflowers. Also any conservationprojects that are happeningaround the town would be awonderful addition and greatway to earn points. Anyonewith any ideas or details of suchprojects is urged to contactOttery In Bloom by email at:[email protected] call Sarah Clarke on 07977900778 or drop details intoPhyllis at Ottery TIC.

SUSTAINABLEOTTERY NEWS

The recent closure of Wendy’sveg shop has created a big gapin the retail market in OtterySt Mary. Costcutters and Coopfill a small part of that gap butcertainly are unable to providethe variety that a specialist shopof it’s kind can offer. Unfortun-ately this means that shoppersare having to go out of townto fulfil some of their vegetableshopping needs.Every town needs a vegetableshop, and with sustainability inmind, the idea of a Commun-ity Shop has been put forwardto Sustainable Ottery to pro-vide an outlet for local prod-ucers and growers. There aremany benefits to a shop beingrun on a community enterprisebasis. Keeping food local meanswe know where our food iscoming from and who is grow-ing it, food miles down andprices down to name a few. Alsoin principle it would not berun for any one person’s gain,it would run on a not-for-profitbasis so that all net profitswould go back into benefittingthe community.

COMMUNITY VEGETABLE SHOPA venture of this kind will needa committed core group ofpeople to manage and steer thesetting up of the shop. It willalso probably need a paidmanager to run the shop as itis a committed responsibility, along with volunteers and thereis no doubt that a shop of it’skind would command enoughtakings to be able to sustain apaid position.Sustainable Ottery would liketo explore the potential of thisidea at a meeting to be held atthe Town Council Offices at7.30pm on Thursday 15th July.If you would like to be involvedin this exciting new ventureeither as a volunteer or as apotential manager then pleasejoin us at the meeting or [email protected] you are unable to attend onthe day. Maybe you have hadexperience of running such anenterprise before and wish topass on some lessons learnt. We look forward to seeing youthere or hearing about anyideas you might have on this.

A series of One Day Spanish Workshops have been arranged forthis summer at the Council Offices in Ottery St Mary. Theseworkshops are a great opportunity to immerse yourself in thelanguage for a total of six hours and benefit from a series ofactivities specially designed to learn quickly with the minimumof effort. In a very relaxed and happy atmosphere we will becovering trouble-shooting sessions of grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking techniques, and ‘get by’ strategies. The newaudiovisual facilities at the Council Chamber will allow thoseattending to view TVE International recordings and will providethem with an inside view of Spain and South America. The day will include a typical Spanish “bocadillo” and a “copade vino” at a local pub. Tea and coffee facilities will also be availableduring the workshop.

Dear Sir,I would like to comment on Mrs Sheila Heathcote’s letter in thelast issue of the Gazette objecting to Sainbury’s coming to Ottery.Unfortunately we do not all have access to the internet to beable to buy on-line or even run a car. Presumably this lady ownsa car and is able to shop at a supermarket outside of Otterywhenever she likes. So she has a choice! Dear Sir,I wholeheartedly endorse the sentiments in Sheila Heathcote’sletter in your last issue: many of the points she raised were onesI and many others made in vain to the deaf ears of the PlanningCommittee.I quote from an article (June 8th) in the Guardian headed‘Supermarkets don’t regenerate communities - they hoovermoney out’. Written by Andrew Simms, Policy Director of theNew Economics Foundation, it referred to evidence from theJoseph Rowntree Foundation which concluded that a Tesco-ledregeneration scheme in Leeds had been disastrous for the localeconomy.Based on evidence from NEF’s own research and elsewhere,Simms states inter alia that: Claims of supermarket job creationhide the net destruction of employment, since their profitscome from reducing operational costs of which a key one is labour.• Money spent in locally owned enterprises is more likely tostick and re-circulate.• Conventional street markets often provide cheaper fresh fruitand vegetables. (And I might add for Ottery, fresher because somuch can be local)• Community relationships wither because people have fewerconversations in supermarkets.(My italics)• The big store’s negative impact on other local enterprises destroyssocial capital, dissolving the glue [holding] communities together.NB: this is not off-the-cuff prejudice or mere hearsay - but thefindings of solid research. Is it too late to save our thriving Otterycommunity? I sincerely hope not.Heather Wheeler

Hello and welcome to July’s tipof the month. Now the sun isshining, and people are workingout doors, we have been askeda lot about how to mix sandand cement. What quantity ofeach to use, and how to makeconcrete. So over the next twomonths we will cover all bases.First of all, we will start withthe quantity required to mix. Ifyou have a small job to do, ourconvenience size bags of sandand cement or concrete mix(5kg, 10kg, 20kg) will be ideal. As they already come with thecorrect amount of cementrequired for the job, whichmakes it nice and easy. If youhave a large area to do, thenour larger builders bags (25-30kg) of sand, cement andchipping would be the most

cost effective way of doing thejob. But for this you will haveto work out how much cementyou require for the job. It’s a bit like making a large cakereally, but just not quite as niceto eat. Each of the ingredientsneed to be measured by vol-ume. To get the proportionsright, people usually do this byshovel load but, unless youhave experience, it is better tomeasure the cement and ballast(or sharp sand/gravel) byactually using a bucket. You tendto get more ballast on a shovelthan cement so just countingthe shovel loads can be mis-leading.Below is a table of how muchcement is needed for what job.this is just a rough guide asevery job is different.

And there we have it your ‘recipe’ for mixing. Next month, welook at how we actually mix it all together.

Ottery W.I. Diary Dates

Last month the Gazette reported 19 year old Ottery studentBen Matthews attempt to cycle across Canada from coast tocoast in an attempt to raise £10,000 for Help the Heroes charity. He is being accompanied by his Canadian friend Brad. This is anextract from his blog dated Sunday 20th June 2010.“So I’m still in Medicine Hat. Brad and I cycled through some ofthe worst rain southern Alberta have had in a long time, and thishas caused some pretty substantial flooding. Luckily we’ve beenhosted by Bonnie and Doug Dirk from warmshowers.org andhave waited for the floods to subside, and the highway to re-open. Being Canada, the roads system isn’t really that intricate,so going around the flooded section means a 200km detour. What was intended to be a one night stop for just me, turnedinto a 3 night stop for Brad, and 4 for me. Despite the last twodays being brilliantly sunny and warm, the highway is still largelyunderwater. It’s so flat here, that there’s nowhere for the waterreally to go except down into the ground, which unfortunatelyfor me is taking days.”If you wish to follow Ben on his epic journey read his blog atwww.benstranscanada.blogspot.comAbove: The road ahead - very wet, very flat and very, very long.

I enjoy doing these articles on behalf of the bells for the OtteryGazette but I do run out of things to say sometimes, because themain thing is to encourage more people to come and enjoy thebells and how many times and different ways can you say that?I have had my little moan and now on to some good news, onJuly 5th Jane and John Willis from Okehampton are coming toshow us how to play ‘four in hand’ bells. OTTERYSCOUTGROUP

On Friday14th May, Ottery StMary scouts hiked 6 miles, which felt like a lot more, toget to a field just outside of Sid-mouth, on top of a what feltlike mountain. This was wherewe would stay for 2 more daysand nights learning how to fendfor ourselves. When we gotthere we started straight awayby putting up our tents. It wasgoing to be a long weekend. The next morning everyonewas up and ready except forsome of the leaders. Well, if wewere ready, then they shouldbe was our thinking, so we wentover with our pots and pans, making a somewhat loud noisethe leaders would say, andbefore long a lot of mumblesof ‘go away’ were coming outof their tents. After Breakfast we were thenoff down to Sidmouth in ourPatrols to get our food whichwould last us for the weekend. We had all planned out our

meals but didn’t know exactlyhow much we would stick tothat idea. When we got downinto Sidmouth we all boughtthe stuff we needed such asbread, pasta and cheese at thecheapest price and we hadquite a lot of money left overas we were given £5 perperson. We decided to spendthe rest of the money on cakes, sweets and fizzy drinks. Afterthe long walk back up the hillout of town we started on ourmeal making skills, setting outare eating area and collectingsome wood and for our fire.We were also taught the art ofchopping wood with an axe, using saws and how to use ourpen knives safely, most of us fartoo close to cutting ourselvesapparently!

After cooking our meals, whichwe all had to do on open fires,we were called to the scoutleaders and asked to prepareour ‘skits’ which we wouldperform that night in front ofthe fire. There were lots of skitswhich are really just acts orsketches which are funny. When the evening came we allgathered around the camp fireto invest some new Scouts. Thepeople to be invested were AliAdams, Saphie Herbert andKate O’Brien who were all

given a flaming torch each tolight the camp fire. There waslots of singing, skits and reallybad jokes but everyone enjoyedit and I bet they would do itagain. When morning broke the nextday everyone woke up to thesound of rain on their tents. Wehad to cook our breakfast andthen we were split into twogroups within our patrols to goorienteering. We had a map andourselves to find the markersthat were dotted around thewoods. Most of us thought wewould give up half way through, but kept going on at thethought that we could earnsome points for our team.At the end of the Sunday, whenit was time to go home andafter the torrential rain we hadthe ‘Flag Down’ ceremony toend the camp. We were also tolearn that some of our olderscouts had, over the weekend, completed the Chief ScoutsGold award. They were MollyBarker, Jack James and HazelSalmon. It was then time tolower the flag and go home. I’msure that all the scouts wouldsay it was one unforgettableweekend, lots of new skills werelearned and fun was had.Katie Richmond (Scout)

The sun shone all weekend on Ottery Cub ScoutsThe Sun shone all weekend aswe took the Cubs camping. Thelocation for the weekend wasthe Sidmouth Scout site,Salcombe Regis. After arrivingon Friday, the Cubs pitched thetents themselves (with a bit ofhelp from the parents).

We tried to tire them out byplaying lots of wide games onthe field. After a huge campfirethe Cubs had a hot chocolateand some cake before finallydropping off to sleep around1am!

Dawn woke them around 5amso we had a number of grumpyCubs (and leaders!!) on Satur-day. However a walk to theDonkey Sanctuary soon perkedeveryone up. The staff at thesanctuary were brilliant, veryhelpful and taught the Cubshow to groom, feed and walkthe donkeys. After a picniclunch and an ice cream wewalked back to the campsiteand decorated our tents basedon Countries in the WorldCup. Sid Vale Scout GroupLeaders then visited the site toteach the Cubs Archery. A fewmore games followed tea, thenanother huge campfire thistime with the addition ofmarshmallows heated on sticks.Luckily the Cubs were prettytired by this point so all were

in bed by 10.30pm - we didn’tsee them again until 7am onSunday morning - bliss! After packing up camp (againwith some assistance fromhelpful parents) the Cubs wenthome exhausted, grubby andhappy! Not a single drop ofrain fell the whole time we were

As I write I am anticipating the commencing of 125th Anniversarycelebrations. By the time this is read it will be over. A report ofevents will be included in next month’s contribution. As I looked back at some of the old documentation I discovereda copy of a lease signed by William Booth in 1893 for the use ofa property on Chapel Lane that we actually occupied for around80 years before moving to Hind Street in 1976.Our next event will be our Harvest celebrations in Septemberwhen Majors John and Lorna Smith, national Adult and FamilyMinistry Officers, will be our special guests. During his trainingto be a Salvation Army Officer Major John spent four monthsrunning the Salvation Army in Ottery, although I’m not sure how‘in charge’ he was in the days of Mrs Waterfield and Miss Townsend. After all the excitement of the anniversary our regular Fridayevents continue with Coffee Morning and Over Sixty Club everyFriday morning and Lunch Club on the first Friday of the month. Our worship meeting is at 3.00pm every Sunday. Everyone iswelcome to come and share with us at any of our events.Steven Watson (Captain)

She will be sorelymissed.

Every Tuesday from 10am we are open for Coffee and a Chat.Everyone is welcome to come in and share this caring fellowship. We serve coffee and biscuits, open the door to the TraidcraftStall for those who wish to purchase, and just enjoy sitting andenjoying each others’ company. Whitehaven: a muchearlier disaster

When earlier this year I pre-pared my August contributionto Kentisbeare Parish MagazineI couldn’t possibly have imag-ined another tragic occurrencewas drawing near. I had headedthe piece: A Fateful Crossover. Each year as the 12th Augustlooms I am called back to thatdate in 1947 when I found my-self as a conscript (picturedhere) boarding an afternoontrain at Cullompton, destina-tion RAF Padgate, via BristolTemplemeads. Chaps who hadexperienced training campswere only too pleased tosupply info much of which Ididn’t like the sound of. You hadto test the water. Too right youdid! On with the journey. FromBristol to Crewe I was in a fullcarriage. Opposite me sat anattractive young lady, fair locksescaping from a straw hat, above a blazer and skirt. Wechatted away and I learned thatshe was travelling to her firstteaching post. She was full ofit. Time went on and she grewdrowsy and fell asleep. As Iwatched a pretty probationerI’ll admit I’d taken a fancy to,she very gradually slid forwardand, not wishing to waken her,I eased my knees across to saveany embarrassment. I waspleased to be of assistance.I believe it was around 8.00amwhen we arrived at Crewewhere we went our separateways. My lady, on a high, wason course for Whitehaven onthe Cumbrian coast as I carrieda contrasting mood to Padgateto be kitted out over severaldays before assignment toanother RAF station and acouple of months square-bash-ing, with full supporting pro-gramme.

As I was being shunted aroundPadgate I envisaged a younglady settling in and preparingto receive a class at the begin-ning of a chosen career forwhich she had trained. All setfair. Alas, alas! Fate allowed mypresumption just two days.On 16th August I saw “White-haven” writ large on nationalnewspapers. There had beenan explosion at the WilliamPitt Colliery the day before and,in spite of all efforts over fivedays, 104 miners perished, themajority through carbon-monoxide poisoning. And therewas another grave statistic: 342fatherless children. The harrowing thought of anapprentice teacher, a girl barelyout of her teens, having such atragic experience with itsdreadful aftermath thrust uponher possessed my mind. I pic-tured the opening of a class-room door at the start of a newschool year. I saw …..No morewords! Such an occurrence criesout of itself. And there was I, inretrospect, off on eight weeksholiday.Derrick V. Rugg

Local author Philip Algar’s newbook, entered for the EverymanWodehouse prize for comicwriting, is the story of the pictur-esque village of WoodfieldMagna which has changed littleover the centuries. Some of itsresidents, at peace in thechurchyard for many years andalmost as active as some of thelocals, would still recognisemuch of the village which, surrounded by helpful hills, seems detached from theoutside world. The residents, keen to enjoy some aspects ofmodern life, nevertheless aredetermined to maintain theessential character of the villageand the surrounding country-side. Do they have the guile towithstand the efforts of thoseanxious to alter their comm-unity for ever? How long can the village remaindistant from the modern world?

How will it react to a concertedattempt from a large company, intent on changing everything, for its own commercial gain? How could the firm advance itsplans whilst still hiding its realintentions from the wily localresidents? The story, which will appeal tomany in East Devon, is toldthrough some of the leadingvillagers, including an agnosticvicar, a doctor whose hobby iserotic topiary, the libidinouspresident of the local cricketclub and a manager in anengineering company, frustra-ted by the stupidities of bigbusiness and his marriage.Aspects of village life, familiarto all who live in this part of

It’s Just Not Village CricketWOODFIELD MAGNA CONFRONTS

THE 21ST CENTURYthe world, have a role, includingthe pub, the local newspaperand members of the Woodfieldcricket team whose selectiondepends more on what they dofor the club than their skills onthe field. A match with a localvillage, which attracts nationalattention, plays a key role indetermining Woodfield’s futureand makes one local a celebrity. As the plot unfolds, it takes amocking look at the businessworld, public relations, themedia and local government, allof which help to determinewhether the village will survivein its current state. The book can be read at twolevels. It is a humorous novelbut its underlying and topical

theme will be recognised by allanxious to preserve a way oflife that is being overtaken bythose who believe changealways means progress.A sequel, ‘It’s Just Not villagePolitics’, will be available in2011. The book is available fromThe Curious Otter Bookshop, priced £7.99.

The Annual General Meeting ofthe Ottery St Mary HeritageSociety was held on June 15 atthe Institute, Ottery. In his chairman’s report,Robert Neal gave a comprehen-sive review of the activities andachievements of the past year.He said that since the closureof Museum Exhibition at Sals-ton Manor Hotel, when displaysand exhibits were moved tosecure storage at Honiton,Trustees were now concernedthat after almost three years insealed containers, much of thedisplay material is showingsigns of deterioration, and thetown needs a museum buildingsoon if further serious andcostly damage is to be avoided.Despite the Society’s frequentexcitement at the prospects ofa suitable building being identi-fied, it was obvious that withoutgenerous funding the prospectof a Heritage Museum for oneof the oldest and most historictowns in Devon remainselusive. The summer exhibition at TheInstitute over the August BankHoliday weekend was hugelysuccessful with visitors packingthe hall for the entire five-dayperiod. The exhibition comm-emorated the outbreak ofWorld War II in 1939, and foc-ussed on the home-front herein Ottery reflecting people’smemories of those austere days.Members were thanked fortheir hard work in staging thissuccessful event.Ongoing projects include theBlue Plaque scheme in the town, the Coleridge Memorial ProjectGroup, in co-operation withother key organisations, tosecure a fitting commemorationfor the most famous andaccomplished Otteregian of alltime, and the Luke ColeridgeMemorial Prize, sponsoredjointly by the Heritage Society

and The Devon and Cornwallbranch of the Western FrontAssociation. This is a monetaryprize to be awarded annuallyfor the best essay submitted byan East Devon Scholar on thetwin themes of Sacrifice andRemembrance. Thanks to Hon. Secretary ChrisSaunders, successful outingshave been arranged to TuckersHall Exeter, St. Nicholas PrioryExeter, and an imminent repeatvisit to the Hunter Flying Clubat Exeter Airport.Peter Harris and Oliver Wilsonhave continued with their am-enities programme of mainten-ance of seats and benchesthroughout the parish, pluscare of the stocks and theupkeep of our famous TumblingWeir.Membership of the Societyremains steady at around 210,making it one of the strongestorganisations locally, andrecruiting of new membersremains a priority.Monthly meetings continue todraw large audiences of 60 to70, the quarterly ‘Heritage’Journal, under the stewardshipof Chris Wakefield, maintains ahigh standard – a reflection onthe quality of local researchersand contributors. The Hon. Treasurer, Jim Woolley, delivered his report on theAnnual Accounts confirming asatisfactory financial position. These were adopted unani-mously by the meeting. Mr JohnBrown was re-appointed asIndependent Examiner of theAnnual Accounts. The three officers of the Societywere re-elected for the comingyear: Robert Neal as Chairman,Chris Saunders as Hon. Secre-tary, and Jim Woolley as Hon.Treasurer. All committee mem-

bers agreed to stand for thecoming year and were re-elected: Hazel Abley, JohnPilsworth, Chris Wakefield,Betty Williams and OliverWilson. The highly popular AnnualColeridge Birthday Lunch isheld at the Tumbling Weir

SLIP! SLOP! SLAP!It is summertime and hopefullythe sun will shine all summerlong so it’s time to: Slip on ashirt, Slop on some sunscreenand Slap on a hat.Skin cancer is a largely preven-table disease but the levels havealmost doubled since the1980’s. There are 2 main typesof skin cancer: - Non-Mela-noma which is very common(more than 84,500 cases in2007) and usually easily cura-ble Malignant Melanoma whichis much more serious but lesscommon (10,600 cases in2007)

Do people surviveskin cancer?

Non-melanoma skin cancer(basal cell carcinoma: BCC, andsquamous cell carcinoma: SCC)is very common and is usuallydetected early and is not lifethreatening.Melanoma survivalrates have increased in the last20 years and are now amongstthe highest for any skin cancerwith over 80% of men and 90%

of women surviving for morethan 5 years. What should you look for?Melanomas- A mole that isdifferent from the rest that ischanging in any way. Sometimesthey can bleed or start itching. The moles may suddenly lookvery black or you may evennotice a different looking newmole. A melanoma can be alarge or small mole. A brownor black streak under a nail. Acommon site for melanomas ison the chest or back whilst inwomen they are commonest onthe legs.Non melanoma skin can-cers (BCC, SCC)- A sore thatnever heals-Translucent growthwith rolled edges-Waxy feelingscar-A flat or slightly depressedlesion that feels hard to thetouch.

What to do if you areworried

Make an appointment to seeyour doctor at ColeridgeMedical Centre and we canreview the area you are worriedabout. Most of the time we canreview your lesion and reassureyou. The majority of nonmelanoma skin cancers can betreated with a cream calledEfudix without the need forsurgery or referral into hospital. Some non-melanoma skincancers will need referral tospecialist skin doctors either

due to their size or position. Allsuspected melanomas willrequire urgent referral to thespecialists at the Royal Devonand Exeter Hospital.

How do you protectyourself from sun damage

and skin cancers? In 1981 Australians were veryworried by the rocketing num-bers of skin cancers and so theSlip Slop, Slap campaign wasintroduced and this signif-icantly raised awareness of theneed to protect the skin fromthe effects of sun damage andhow to do it. It is attributed toslowing the rate of growth inskin cancer in Australia. So…Slip on a shirt: any shirt willdo but try to make sure it isone that covers your shouldersand the V of your neck. Ideallyif you are going to the beachget the whole family UV protec-tion T shirts, even supermarketssell them now. Slop on somesunscreen: Choose a factor 30sunscreen and put it on whenyou get dressed and before yougo out and then reapply reg-ularly throughout the day.Always take enough sunscreenfor the day if you go out walkingor to the beach.Slap on a hat:the wider brimmed the betteras it protects your face ANDthe back of your neckAny worries about your skin?Come in and see one of theMedical Centre Doctors.

Show writer thrilled with New Ottregians performersPictured here is the adultsection of The New Ottregians. In the centre of the picture (inthe grey striped dress) is RuthNunn, the writer of the up-coming show ‘Jane Eyre - TheMusical’.She is so delighted that we aredoing the show- written only 4years ago - that she came downfrom Bristol, where she teachesand lectures at university there,to see rehearsals in progress. And she is so thrilled with thecalibre of the performers thatshe has hired a cottage to stayfor the week of the show inBranscombe! We have a large cast of chil-dren in the show too but asthey only rehearse until 9.00pmthey had already gone home bythe time the camera came out!We are in the last few weeks ofrehearsal now and the cast arebusy learning lines, dances, andmaking costumes and props. It is so exciting to be doing ashow that no other adult ama-teur group have yet to do -

thanks to the internet and myhusband for finding it. It is verychallenging and particularlydemanding on the two leadroles of Jane (played by KarenRugg from Ottery PrimarySchool) and Rochester (playedby the well known Ottery post-man, her husband, Rick). Thetwo have very fine voices and

are superb actors too, wellbacked up by a very experien-ced and talented cast. The show opens at King’sschool at 7.30 on Tuesday 27thuntil Saturday 31st July. Allproceeds, as usual, will go toHospiscare and we are hopingto make as much (£5000) aswe did last year.

There will be an optional twocourse home made supperavailable on Saturday servedbefore the performance at6.30pm.Tickets are available now fromboth Bagpuss and Stagestruckin Ottery. We hope to see youall there!Helena Williams

Over the last two months, Ihave reported who will beplaying which parts in the NewOttregian’s production of ‘JaneEyre – The Musical’ with somenotable omissions (apologiesDave and David). However, there is one very importantgroup not yet mentioned. Oneof Toni and Helena’s objectiveswhen they started the group16 years ago was to give youngpeople an opportunity toappear on stage. And how theyhave met that objective! Thisyear is no exception. We havea group of talented youngplayers – vitally importantbecause they are the future.Maya, Hannah and Alec havebeen listed already and inaddition we have Esme, Hazel,

Katy, Maria, Miranda, Millie,Paige, Rebecca and Tamsin. Theyjoin in most of the chorus num-bers and also sing three songsas a separate group whichranges from orphans to avillage school and an eveningdress soiree. One of my favourite authors isBill Bryson who has the honourof being the author who hasbooks in more sections of thebook shop than any other.
