First Grade Virtual Field Trip
GoalTo learn how adult otters care for their
babies and to compare that to how other animals (including people) care for their babies.
Question of the DayHow are otters similar to other animals? To
People?
ContextLearning about the needs of the six different
types of animals (fish, birds, bugs, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals) is a major science goal in first grade. By the end of the year the students should be able to make more complex comparisons of animals
Standard Course of StudyScience: 1.02 Investigate the needs of a variety of
different animals.1.03 Observe the ways in which humans are
similar to other organisms.
GradingGrading will be done informally. Were both
diagrams completed? Were they accurate? If they weren’t accurate, were appropriate changes made before they were presented to the class?
InstructionsWatch the video.Choose one other animal. Pick up a Venn diagram
off the back table and compare the animal you chose to the otter.
Take another Venn diagram off the back table and, as a group, compare the otter to people.
Put your finished papers in the Science drawer. Be sure your name is on your paper and your group’s name is on the group diagram. We will present these to the class tomorrow.
