Editorial

It is a great honour for NCAO to bring you another issue of its biannual newsletter Ottawa Chautari. This eighth issue has come to you amidst new year celebrations and the fourth annual general meeting (AGM) of the Association.

Started by King Vikra-maditya in 57 BC, as a commemoration of his victory upon the Shaks, Vikram Samwat (era) is the main solar calendar followed in Nepal.

Nepal is known for festivals and new year is without exception. Its ar-rival is well noticed with Bisket Jatra festival which is celebrated in Bhaktapur district of the Kathmandu valley. This

festival lasts for about a week and is marked by chariots seen in the streets, with music of traditional bands and a ceremonial pole made of a thick, shorn tree-trunk some 25 m long, erected on the ground.

Another occasion for us is our fourth annual general meeting (AGM). With this AGM, NCAO now

enters the fourth year of its es-tablishment. With over 135 mem-bers, the association is coming up with flying colours. The activities of the association symbolize cor-dial harmony and togetherness contributed by each member of

the community. Now that the term of the current board has come to an end, we look forward to hand-ing over to the new executive board, in-spiration and coop-eration we received from the former executive boards.

In this occasion of the new year and the AGM, we gather again for our com-mitment and to offer helping hands that will contribute to the

uplift of the community we belong to and to the society we live in.

NCAO Activities

Since the publication of the last issue during Dashain Mahotsav 2004 in October, NCAO had a number of activities. They are summarized as below.

So far NCAO has 45 family memberships, 12 single memberships and 6 student memberships.

NCAO Website

Continuing with the trend of job posting (http://www.nepalese.ca/jobs), there were some 30 job posting this year. Ever since the Members’ Corner and ‘Other Announcements’ were introduced since the last AGM, there has been about 270 posting.

Dashain Mahotsav 2004

Annual Dashain celebrations on Saturday, October 23 was clearly the major NCAO event of the year. For the first time ever, NCAO managed to obtain a public venue for rehearsals at Hardini LINC Centre thanks to OCISO. Rehearsals took place on Sundays starting September 26, for four weekends. Rehearsals were attended by all participating NCAO members. Volunteers and parents were enthusiastic in encourag-ing participants.

Finally the auspicious day of Tika kicked off on October 23 with community members and guests attending the event with unprecedented zeal and enthusiasm. With Tika & Jamara set to grace the attendee and the Francophone de Vanier hall decorated with colourful items and banners, the stage was all set for the par-ticipants.

The event turned out to be a splendid combination of songs and dances by various performers amidst a flu-ent performances by the masters of the ceremony and delicious food.

Seventh volume of NCAO’s newsletter, Ottawa Chautari was also released during the occasion and the display of Nepali artifacts by Sushil Joshi stole the show. NCAO is grateful for his exhibition of rare artifacts.

Nepali language school is running smoothly with two classes at D. Roy Kennedy Public School at Woodroffe Avenue. The school moved to this new venue in this school year.

Apart from the curriculum in Nepali, there were various activities including a quiz contest on April 2 when win-ners were awarded prizes.

New Year 2005New Year was celebrated with a potluck din-ner on the eve of December 31 at Ottawa Citi-zen hall. Comedy show and the dance were the highlights of the evening and open floor dance were enjoyed by all alike.

Fresh Start Program

Following a proposal sent to CCI under its Fresh Start Program to promote professional art-ists, NCAO obtained a grant of $1,000. This was indeed a milestone for NCAO. Résumé of com-munity artists Geeta Thapa, Grishma Thapa, Kanchan Gautam, Lana Rana, Patricia Rana, Philemon Rai, Rajendra Rana, Rasna Sherchan and Robin Subba accompanied the proposal. Pawan Agrawal, Pramod Dhakal and John P. Melville (OCISO) contributed in the proposal. NCAO extends its acknowledgement for the contribution made by them.


Participation in Ottawa Asian Heritage Month Activities The month of May in Canada is being celebrated as the Asian Heritage Month to commemorate the contributions of Asian Canadians. This year Ottawa Asian Heritage Month Society (OAHMS) is organizing various events in the city throughout the month of May. NCAO, as a supporting organization of OAHMS, is participating in its various activities. NCAO will be presenting a Nepali dance at the OAHMS Gala Concert to be organized at Christ Church Cathedral on May 14 and will be show casing Nepalese culture and artifacts at Tulip Festival Pavilion, Major Hill’s Park on May 23. The detail information about OAHMS activities and events are available at http://asianheritagemonth.net. NCAO encourages its members to participate in these events and make them successful.

Winterlude Outing

NCAO organized a winterlude outing at Dow’s Lake on February 19 after-noon. Some forty community members, especially the skaters enjoyed the day. Even novice were seen trying to learn how to skate. Younger members of the community excelled in skating skills. As the last day of Winterlude, colourful tents

were seen everywhere and children won various prizes from different organizers after performing their individual and group talent. Prior to the gathering at the venue, pizza was served at Nepali language school. Popcorn, hot

chocolate, cookies and maple toffee were liked by all including adults. NCAO would like to thank Michael Casey for coordinating the event. Above lines in Nepali better describe the day.

Proposal for Funding

A proposal for Bell Community sports fund grants has been recently submitted. Kalidas Subedi contributed in the proposal and NCAO acknowledges his contribution.

An Apple A Day

Today at school, did I tell you about an adventure I had? Well! It started like this, I was walking to school when I found a dollar. So I went to the store and as I walked in, the ground was moving. I knew I was ‘TRAVELLING’ ! The next thing I knew, I was on an island and there was a sign reading ‘Junkland’. After walking about five minutes I saw a village and I went there. When I got there, I met a girl named Abby. She showed me around. All the people were fat and some were sick. I wished, I was back home. I reached my pocket and I found five apple seeds. I thought for a moment, maybe we could plant these apple seeds and make these people healthy. Apple is very healthy because it has minerals, vitamins and is good for human bodies. So Abby and I planted the apple seeds. Then Abby brought magic water so that the apple seeds could grow faster. After the apples were ready, Abby and I gave them away to all the people. The seeds that people got from their apples, they replanted them over and over again. Plus the sign ‘Junkland’ now is ‘Appleland’ ! “Wake up”! Wake up”! It was my sister and she was eating an apple. She gave me an apple and said “Here is your apple.” “Every thing that happened was a dream?” I mum-bled to my self. My sister said, “An Apple a day keeps the doctor away”.

Jessica’s parents were rich. They were the richest family in her Dance City. In that city, everyone loved dance, music, etc. Jessica surely looked like a grace-ful dancer, didn’t she? Well, she surely did, but she wasn’t. Wherever she danced, she broke something or hurt someone.

But she was good at her school work although she never gave up hope about dancing. Her parents put

her in an expensive dance school, but it was no good. So they hired private dance teachers, but one after another, they all quitted.

One day, while Jessica was passing by the TV room, she heard her parents say that many girls were disappearing from their houses. She heard it but she did not want to spoil her mood. So she went to her own little park. When she was sliding on a long round slide, she heard something. She got out of the slide and looked through the peephole.

She saw five-six people wearing all black and masks. She was frightened. They noticed her and crashed the door open. Then they dragged her and put her in a sack. When the dragging stopped, they pulled Jessica and other girls out of the sack.

Then she saw other girls who were dancing on a glass. Their feet were bleeding and they looked tired and starving.

Then they pulled away the bleeding girls from there and forced Jessica and other girls, who they had just brought, to dance. Jessica was ready to dance but others were not. Jessica began dancing everywhere. She spun around and bumped into a piano and broke it. Other girls started screaming. The kidnappers piled all girls into a jeep and took them to their own houses. Everyone lived happily ever after.
