Evolution of cycling facility design
• Emphasis on user safety
• Consideration of pedestrian / cyclist interaction and accessibility
• Cycling infrastructure investment
• Involvement with advocacy groups
• Breadth of experience and research within and outside the province

Current trends considered in OTM Book 18 V2
![Page 5: OTM Book 18 V2.0 - Walk and Roll Cornwall SDG...•OTM Book 18 V2 will expand on which contexts they’re most appropriate for, and which conflicts need to be addressed Image Source:](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060507/5f1fd1417eb52363c03a24e2/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Advisory Bike Lanes
• Shared roadway facility that delineates space for cycling on a narrow roadway
• No roadway centerline
• Centre lane is narrower than two conventional travel lanes
• Vehicles pass by entering bicycle lane, but must always yield for cyclists

Advisory Bike Lanes

Advisory Bike Lanes
• Applicable for many streets with low to moderate traffic volumes and with constrained road right-of-way
• Viable alternative option to bike lanes and signed routes
• Traffic calming effect
• OTM Book 18 V2 adds guidance about ABL and aligns with TAC
City of Ottawa, Sommerset Advisory Bike LAne 7

Separation Thresholds
• The nomograph is a graphical tool using speed and volume inputs
• Provides guidance on appropriate types of cycling facilities for different contexts
• All ages & abilities facility selection is context driven
WSP & Alta 8
![Page 9: OTM Book 18 V2.0 - Walk and Roll Cornwall SDG...•OTM Book 18 V2 will expand on which contexts they’re most appropriate for, and which conflicts need to be addressed Image Source:](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060507/5f1fd1417eb52363c03a24e2/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Separation Thresholds
• Current OTM Book 18 has an existing nomograph to inform facility selection
• Separation thresholds have been lowered and are in-line with current best practices
• Separate urban and rural considerations
• OTM Book 18 V2 refines the facility selection process to validate initial assumptions

Setback Crossing / Protected Intersections
• Cycling facility is setback ~4 m from the curb line
• Design prompts drivers to cross close to a 90 degree angle
• Tightened corner radius to reduce vehicle speed and improve crossing angle
• Typically implemented for multi-use paths and cycle tracks

Setback Crossing / Protected Intersections• Many safety benefits; but also a broad
range of challenges associated with this design
• How to maximize benefits and address the challenges?
• How to provide design details that can be adapted to many different contexts
• Current OTM Book 18 provides some basic guidance on setback crossings
• Book 18 V2.0 will provide much more detailed guidance on all the components of a protected intersection

WSP & Alta 12
• RRFB increases yielding rates for motorists
• Trail geometry forces cyclists to reduce speed
• Cyclists stop and cross when there is a gap
(concept still under development)
Bike Crossover & RRFB
![Page 13: OTM Book 18 V2.0 - Walk and Roll Cornwall SDG...•OTM Book 18 V2 will expand on which contexts they’re most appropriate for, and which conflicts need to be addressed Image Source:](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060507/5f1fd1417eb52363c03a24e2/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Bike Crossover & RRFB
• Provides an option where a crossing is needed but a traffic signal is not warranted or feasible
• OTM Book 18 V2 proposes this treatment as a pilot project pending MTO approval and data collection & evaluation
• The design is intended to be consistent with a Type C PXO

NACTO: Don’t Give Up at the Intersection 14
Protected signal phasing
• Provide fully separate phases for bicycles and turning vehicles
• Completely separate turning vehicle movement conflicts through time
• Motor vehicle turns given their own exclusive phase
• Application for high-volume intersections and multi-lane roads
![Page 15: OTM Book 18 V2.0 - Walk and Roll Cornwall SDG...•OTM Book 18 V2 will expand on which contexts they’re most appropriate for, and which conflicts need to be addressed Image Source:](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022060507/5f1fd1417eb52363c03a24e2/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Protected signal phasing
• Signal operations and geometric design of intersections work together
• OTM Book 12/12A speak to signal design and phasing strategies
• OTM Book 18 V2 will identify application contexts for protected signal phasing

Two-way cycling facility guidance
• Two-way facilities can be found in the form of multi-use trails and cycle tracks
• Key challenges include:
• Less intuitive
• Complex intersection designs
• Difficult to accommodate turn queuing
• Key benefits include:
• Reduced space requirements
• Easier maintenance
• High comfort
