    Asteroids(also called planetoids)

Are rocky or metallic objects that orbitthe sun in the same way that planets

    orbit.

Asteroids are hard to see because theyreflect little light and they are always on

    the move.

None of the asteroids has an atmosphere.

Believed to be fragments of an exploded

planet or planet that failed to form.

Many asteroids orbit the sun in a region

between Mars and Jupiter. This area is

    called the asteroid belt.

  • 7/29/2019 Other Members of SS

A larger object such as a planet may

pull an asteroid out of orbit. And oncean asteroid is captured by the

gravitational pull of a planet, it may

become a satellite of that planet.

Many astronomers believe that the two

satellites of Mars, Phobos and Deimos,

    are captured asteroids.

What prevents the asteroidsin the belt from moving

towards the sun and hittingthe inner planets, including

    our Mother Earth?

If it were not for the giant planet Jupiter

pulling the asteroids outward, largeasteroids would constantly bombard

    Mercury, Venus, Mars and Earth.

Since the belt is closer to Jupiter than it is tothe sun, Jupiter exerts more gravitational

pull on the asteroids than the sun. As a

result, the asteroids are kept in orbit awayfrom the inner planets.

    Meteoroids

Are chunks of rock or metal, smaller than

    an asteroid, orbiting the sun.

Most meteoroids are so small and have no

visible trace when they burn up in theatmosphere.

Meteoroids travel around the sun in a

variety of orbits and at various speeds. Theyare believed to form when asteroids hit each

    other as they orbit.

    Meteor

Is a light in the night sky resulting

    from a meteoroid entering earths

atmosphere. The light is caused by friction between

    the fast-moving meteor and the

    atmosphere.

Its glow may last for several seconds

Have you seen a shooting star?

Shooting star is a spark of light in

the night sky when a meteor burns

up as it enters the earths

    atmosphere.

    It is actually afalling meteor.

    What is meteor shower?

    Meteor shower happens when

the Earth crosses the orbit of astream of meteoroids.

    Meteorite

Is a meteor that reaches the Earths surface. Based from the scientists record, meteorites

    constantly hit the Earths surface.

Approximate size of meteorites Number of pieces that hit the Earth

    Pea-size 10 per hour

    Kasoy nut-size 1 per hour

    Lansones-size 1 per 10 hours

    Basketball-size 1 per month

    What is a planet?

In 2006 the International AstronomicalUnion (IAU) redefined what a planet is. A

    planet:

1.Is a body that orbits the sun2.Is large enough for its own gravity to make

    it round

3.And has "cleared its neighborhood" ofsmaller objects

    4.Is not a satellite.

    What is a Dwarf Planet?

    Celestial body orbiting the Sun

Massive enough to be rounded by its own

    gravity

BUT has NOT cleared its neighboring

    region of planetesimals

    Is not a satellite

    5 Known Dwarf Planets:

    1. Ceres - the smallest identified dwarfplanet in the Solar System and the only

dwarf planet in the asteroid belt.

was discovered on January 1, 1801 andwas considered a planet for half a

    century.

Was classified as a dwarf planet on

    September 13, 2006

    2. Eris - the largest known dwarf planetin the Solar System and the ninth

largest body known to orbit the Sun.

Was discovered on January 5, 2005. The media once referred to it as the

    10thplanet.

It was accepted as a dwarf planet on

    September 13, 2006.

    3. Pluto the second largest known dwarf

planet in the solar system. it has 3 known moons: Charon, Nix,

    Hydra

Was discovered on February 18, 1930and was classified as a planet for 76

    years.

It was classified as a dwarf planet on

    August 24, 2006.

    4. Makemake was discovered on

March 31, 2005 and was classified

as a dwarf planet on July 11,

    2008.5. Haumea was discovered on

    December 28, 2004. It was

accepted as a dwarf planet onSeptember 17, 2008.

Makemake is the creator of humanity in the

mythos of the Rapa Nui, the native peopleof Easter Island. The name choice preserves

    the planetary object's connection with

    Easter.

Haumea is the Hawaiian goddess ofchildbirth and fertility.

The moons "Hiiaka" and "Namaka are

named after after two of Haumea'sdaughters.

    Comet

Is an object that also travels in an orbitaround the sun.

It is composed of dust and particles mixed

with frozen water, methane and ammonia. Since a comet is a mass of frozen gas and

rock particles, it develops a bright tail when

it passes near the sun. Frozen water, methane and ammonia begin to vaporize

because of the heat from the sun.

    Oort Cloud

Most comets are thought to originate from a

huge cloud called the Oort Cloud.

    Spherical cloud of comets.

    May contain trillions of comets

The outer edge is the farthest reach of the

    Suns gravitational pull.

    There are no confirmed observationsits

    existence is theoretical only.
