Osun Tribunal: Election Was Free, Fair - Witnesses •As Aregbesola Closes Defence

GOVerNOr rauf aregbesola of the state of Osun has closed defence against the petition of the defeated Peoples democratic Party (PdP) governorship

candidate, senator Iyiola Omisore, challenging his august 9, 2014 re-election before Justice elizabeth Ikpejime-led Governorship election Petition tribunal.

Announcing the closure of the defence on Wednesday,

Retirement Is No Death Sentence – Osun Head Of ServiceretIrees have been admonished not to see their

new status as a death sentence, but rather as the beginning of a new life process.

State of Osun Head of Service, Mr. Olayinka O w o e y e , g a v e t h e admonition while declaring open a day retirement workshop organised for those who retired under the Contributory Pension Scheme between January 2013 till date.

While observing that the only thing that is permanent in life is change, the Head of Serv ice , who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Bureau of Local Government Staff Pension, Mr. Kayode Afo l ab i , counselled the retirees to adapt to their new status without necessarily staying idle, adding that life can still be exciting after retirement.

Owoeye assured the retirees that with the new Cont r ibu to ry Pens ion Scheme, they would be able to access their terminal or retirement benefits as and when due.

Speaking in the same vein, the Director, Bureau of Public Service Pension, Mr. Yemi Oyeleye, pointed o u t t h a t t h e p e n s i o n scheme has taken care of the shortcomings of the old scheme like stealing of pension funds, coupled with

subjection of senior citizens to untold hardship, which often lead to their death.

Oyeleye then enthused that with the forthcoming historic presentation of retirement bond certificates to the first set of retirees under the new scheme, the Contributory Pension Scheme has finally come to stay in the state of Osun.

R e p r e s e n t a t i v e s o f the various pension fund

administrators who took tu rn to en l igh ten the retirees on practical ways of accessing their retirement benefits, were unanimous in their claim that each retiree would be able to access his/her benefit within three weeks of the delivery of the bond certificate.

Auctioneers Advocate Govt Patron-by keHINde ayaNtuNJI

NI G e r I a a s s o c i a t i o n o f a u c t i o n e e r s ( N a a ) h a s m a d e a clarion call to government to always seek service

of professional auctioneers for the sales of government’s obsolete property, rather than using tender system.

The President of the association, Alhaji Aliyu Kiliya, who stated this recently in Osogbo, at the annual general meeting of the association, said the sales of government property through auctioneers would enhance revenue generation for government business.

Kiliya decried the attitude o f some gove rnmen t agenc ie s to sa l e s o f government proper ty, especially through tender system, submitting that the system had given room for fraudulent practices.

He called on government parastatals and institutions, a s w e l l a s p r i v a t e organisations to employ service of auctioneers to guide against shady practices in the sales of

government used-property.A l s o s p e a k i n g ,

t h e S e c r e t a r y, B o a r d o f Tr u s t e e s , N i g e r i a Association of Auctioneers, C h i e f S h u a i b A k a n , urged members to always promote professionalism in the discharge of their responsibilities, saying only professional auctioneers could provide a level playing ground for members of public to bid for government property.

Akan fu r the r u rged g o v e r n m e n t t o g i v e auctioneers opportunity to practice their profession and, emphasised the need for the auctioneers to educate members of public and relevant agencies on the importance of auctioneers to nation building.

He charged government to see members of the association as partners in progress and agents capable of turning waste to wealth.

Earlier, the association’s General Secretary, Engineer Isebor Benjamin, said the annual general meeting provided platform for the association to discuss the success and challenges of the members, as well as championing new course for development of the association.

Benjamin lauded the leadership of the association in the State of Osun for their ingenuity and spirit of togetherness towards successful hosting of Year 2014 Annual Genera l Meeting of the association.

In his welcome address, t h e C h a i r m a n o f t h e association in the state, Mr Mashood Oladejo (MAO) (JP), attributed the decision of the association to hold its annual general meeting in Osogbo, the state capital, to outstanding performance of

his administration.O l a d e j o c a l l e d o n

Governor Rauf Aregbesola o f t h e s t a t e t o g i v e auctioneers in the state opportunity to turn waste to wealth in the state, so as to enhance its internal revenue generation, especially at this period, when the nation is facing financial challenges.

The cha i rman , who expressed the readiness of the professional auctioneers in the state to register with the state government, urged government to provide conducive environment for auctioneers at all levels to practice their profession in the state.

O l a d e j o h o w e v e r called on members of his association across the board in the state to join hands with him in piloting the affairs of the association for better.

The seminar provided an avenue for the retired and retiring officers to clear grey areas on pension matters under the new Contributory Pension Scheme.

Aregbesola’s counsel, Kunle Adegoke, said his client was satisfied with the defence put up before the panel.

The counsel, as at the time of closing the defence, spent only eight out of the statutory 10 days, allowed him to defend the allegations of the petitioners.

He called 19 witnesses in

defence of the allegations of the petitioners and their witnesses before the tribunal.

The second respondent, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been billed to open its defence on Friday, December 19.

The APC counsel, Mr Ajibola Basiru, said the witnesses called by the first respondents were to further convince the court that the election was indeed free and fair, reiterating that the petitioners have not proved any case.

He said: “We are not under any obligation to even call a particular number of witnesses, because the petitioners have not called witnesses to cover areas pleaded in the petition and secondly, their witnesses have been thoroughly discredited under cross-examination.

“The petit ioners have also not established the case of non-compliance. From experience, this is one of the most useless election petitions I have ever seen in the history of this country,” he said.

The petitioners’ counsel, Nathaniel Oke (SAN), said it was for the tribunal to determine the veracity of the allegations of the petitioners and the defence of the respondents.

Ear l ie r, Aregbesola’s counsel had cal led two witnesses, Aminulahi Rafiu, a voter from Ward 4, Unit 9 of Ede-North Local Government Council Area and Atanda Isaac, an APC party agent at Ward 1, Unit 1 of Irepodun Local Government Council area, who told the tribunal that the election was free and fair.

They both told the tribunal that the INEC officials brought all the required election materials for the units and political party agents signed the result forms.

The witnesses also told the panel that neither voters nor party agents complained on the conduct of the election on the said day.

APC Has Shamed Critics - Osun ChaptertHe all Progressives congress in the state of

Osun has congratulated the party leaders and elders for the masterly way they managed the

choices of the Presidential flag bearers of the party. In a statement from the party’s Directorate of Public-

ity, Research and Strategy, made available to the me-dia in Osogbo on Thursday and signed by its Director, Barr. Kunle Oyatomi, the APC said that the suc-

cessful exercise not only put the party’s critics to shame, it also boosted its capacity and maturity in the management of complex socio-political

challenges.According to the spokes-

man of the APC in Osun, the Nigerian public now has a clear picture of what to expect from the APC when it is voted into power, come 2015.

“Nigerians”, the party said, “can trust the APC to put together a team of patriotic professionals who

would steer the country away from its current slide into anarchy, poverty and the worst type of corrup-tion its people have ever experienced”. According to the party, the build-up to the largely peaceful, democratic and so glaring-ly transparent processes, leading to the make-up of the party structure and

choice of its presidential team, is ‘a clear demon-stration of capacity to ex-pertly manage complex challenges.

“The result of this pains-taking political party engi-neering is the emergence, not only of a formidable alternative to the PDP, but one with a leadership team obviously superior to the tragedy of the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

“Buhari/Osinbajo, from any rational perspective you may look at it, is a bet-ter team than the tragedy of Jonathan/Sambo, which has in the last six years,

ruined Nigeria’s reputation at home and abroad’, the APC said.

“That”, the party con-cluded, “is the pivotal achievement of this gru-elling process of making difficult choices to posi-tion the APC as a credible alternative to the clueless, corrupt and inefficient PDP government, led by President Goodluck Jon-athan”.

Aregbesola’s Wife Worries Over Chibok Girls’ by kazeem mOHammed

WIfe of the governor of the state of Osun, mrs sherifat aregbesola, has further expressed concern over the plight of the

abducted chibok school girls, who were kidnapped by the boko Haram sect and yet to be released from captivity for close to a year now.

She called on Nigerians t o s t r eng then t he i r

prayers, individually and collectively for the safe release of the girls and peace in the country.

This was just as she appealled to parents and guardians to continue to improve on the care and attention being given to their children.

Mrs Aregbesola spoke at the 2014 End of the Year Children’s Party, organised by her office in collaboration with the State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs in Osogbo on Thursday.

S h e s a i d : “ W e should ensure that we

see to the good health and happiness of our children at all times. We should also train them to inculcate the virtues and the culture of our people.

“Most importantly, I urge you to make the education of our children a top priority. There is no

excuse for any child not to go to school any longer in the State of Osun, given the comprehensive free education policy of the state government.

“We should understand that education paves way for better living standard in the wor ld , ” Mrs Aregbesola stressed.

Just as parents have crucial role to play in the life of their children, the wife of the governor also charged children to respect their parents, teachers, leaders, and the elderly in our society and refrain from all kinds of misbehaviours that could negatively affect the society.

“You should grow up as true citizens, who come from a state that enthrones the virtues of Omoluabi,” she stressed.

Noting that bringing together the children from different socio-economic backgrounds through the occasion would further inculcate in them high sense of belonging, Mrs Aregbesola added that it would oil the spirit of unity and enhance peace and joy in the state.

This, according to her, was because the administration of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola places the highest priority on the welfare and happiness of the people, saying: “We believe this is the only way we can truly say we have democracy.”

R e p r e s e n t i n g t h e governor on the occasion, the former Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, further urged parents not to shy away from their responsibilities on their children to ensure that they do not join bad

Osun Speaker Explores Workers’ Understanding On Fund Paucity by kazeem mOHammed

tHe speaker, state of Osun House of assembly, Honourable Najeem salaam, has lauded the patience of the state workers on the current

challenge of paucity of funds confronting the state.

Court Condemns Two Armed Robbers To Deathby sHINa abubakar

a state High court sitting in Ikirun and presided over by Justice Jide falola had last tuesday convicted and sentenced two armed

robbers to death.The convic t s were

Olowookere Segun and Morakinyo Sunday, who both pleaded not guilty to the eight-count charge of conspiracy, robbery and stealing contrary to

sections 6(b) and 1(2)(a) of Robbery and Firearms (special provisions) Act, cap R 11 laws of Federation of Nigeria 2004 and section (390)(1) Criminal Code Law, Cap 34, Laws of Osun State, 2002.

The prosecution team from the State of Osun Ministry of Justice, led by Solicitor-General, Barrister A b io l a A dew emimo , who appea red a long with Barrister Folasade Adekomi, had, during the trial, called six witnesses and tendered several exhibits, while the first convicted person testified in his defence and called

another witness, the second accused rested his case on that of the prosecution.

The convicted persons were said to have forcefully broken into the house of one Mr Balogun Tope, a police officer attached t o d i v i s i o n a l p o l i c e headquarters, Okuku, in April 2010 and carted away some of his belongings.

Later on 13th November, 2010, some boys were

sighted around the victim’s house, holding cutlasses and a dane gun, while two of them were arrested, five escaped.

They later confessed that they stole his fowls and they had been in his house before to steal.

The duo also stated that they had earlier robbed one Alhaja Umani Oyewo in her house, stealing broilers, eggs and kegs of vegetable oil.

In his judgment, Justice Jide falola discharged them on five-count charge and were convicted on other three-count charge, bordering on conspiracy to commit armed robbery, which a t t rac t s dea th sentence; robbery attracts l i f e s en t ence ; wh i l e stealing attracts three years’ imprisonment.

Justice Falola also gave a recommendation that Mr Governor can decide to commute the death sentence to ten years imprisonment, considering the ages of the convicts.

He also ordered that the insanity status of the second convict should be investigated, and if proven, he should be kept at asylum at the pleasure of the governor.

He said the stakeholders in government have started brainstorming on the possible options that would be win-win situation for the workers and the state.

In a statement by his spokesman, Mr. Goke Butika, Salaam, who expressed displeasure on the delay of payment of workers’ salaries in the state, hinted that empirical

evidence has shown that reliance on the federal allocation is no longer sustainable.

The statement read: “I feel the pain of the workers in our states, particularly, Osun, but contended with the pragmatic approach of the government to redress the situation.

“However, the situation has called for an all-inclusive engagement of

all classes of stakeholders, because our pure ly-consumer status is not sustainable,” Salaam reiterated.

He said the leadership of the state parliament was unhappy about the sprawling corruption at the top, a situation that made the country to have no substantial saving for

the rainy days, when the crude oil was selling at over $100 per barrel.

Salaam then disclosed that the state parliament under his watch would not look away from the plight of the workers as a result of obvious massive cut of allocation to the state, saying that the parliament would soon engage the

representatives of workers on the development.

He ruled out any action that could lead to the disengagement of workers.

T h e S p e a k e r t h e n charged the workers to take the advantage of the situation by deploying more productive services that could generate more revenue for the state, while all ministries and parastatals must rise and

justify their existence. He said: “We can’t

continue the trend of consumer state leading a sedentary life. We have to rise now as a people and wean the state from “feeding bottle” federal arrangement currently being practised and pursue self-sustenance through an home-grown revenue generation with human face.”

2015: NCP Calls For Free, Fair, Credible PollstHe governorship candidate of the National

conscience Party (NcP) in the august 9, 2014 governorship election in the state of Osun,

comrade Olanrewaju afolayanka, has urged the Independent National electoral commission (INec) to ensure that the 2015 general elections are free, fair and credible. A f o l a y a n k a i n a n interview with OsuN defeNder on Thursday in Osogbo, the state capital, stated that the 2015 general elections will once again put the integrity of INEC chairman, Professor Attair Jega, on the line, while adding that Nigerians are already monitoring the election processes.

According to Afolayanka, Nigerians would not accept from the electoral umpire, any foul play or misconduct capable of undermining and compromising free, fair and credible elections in the forthcoming polls.

He however commended

INEC and Jega on the conduc t o f the Osun governorship election, stating that the outcome of the election actually reflected the feelings and choice of the people, as it was devoid of electoral heist.

Afolayanka maintained that Osun gubernatorial election showed that INEC has improved but there was need for more technical, administrative and logistic improvements for the electoral commission to ensure a hitch-free election conduct in the 2015.

The Iree-born politician warned against deployment

of military personnel for the 2015 general elections, claiming that election is a civil matter that needs the supervision of just the police and officers and men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.

According to him, the 2015 general elections, specifically the presidential election, garners the interest of Nigerians both at home and in diaspora, warning that INEC and security agencies should not play any funny game to suppress the choice of the people in choosing who becomes the next President of Nigeria

“The 2015 gene ra l e lec t ions , I must say particularly the presidential election, is very significant to the existence and continuity of Nigeria, because so many factors and fate are attached

to it. Some regions have been threatening to unleash violence on another region, if one candidate or the other emerges.

“INEC holds the fate of Nigeria on the 2015 elections. The electoral umpire must strive to give us transparent and credible elect ions that wil l be acceptable by all, including those threatening the peace of the country.”

Afolayanka also called on politicians to caution their political followers on actions and utterances capable of sparking violence before, during and after the 2015 general elections.

NUJ Makes Case For LG Autonomy

tHe Nigeria union of Journalists (NuJ) b-zone, comprising Ogun, Osun, ekiti, Ondo and Oyo states, has advocated autonomy for the third tier

of government in Nigeria in the on-going amendment of the 1999 constitution.

The Vice-President of the zone, Mr Dele- Atunbi, in a statement in Akure, the Ondo State capital, said the granting of autonomy to the local government is in the spirit of true federalism.

T h e u n i o n w a s o f the opinion that local government autonomy will bring about the rapid t ransformat ion a t the grassroots, unlike the present situation of stunted growth and inaction.

He posited that grassroots development will reduce tremendously the rural-urban drift and congestion in the urban centres.

Atunbi also noted that reduction in rural-urban drift will equally reduce organised crime in the country and ensure the success of the youths in agricultural programmes of the Federal Government, thereby bringing about food security, as well as generating more activities at the grassroots.

The NUJ zonal head further decried a situation whereby one or two out of the three tiers of government will enjoy autonomy.

According to him, this development is inequitable, as what is good for the goose is equally good for the gander.

As a patriot, he said the union was of the opinion that the present situation has given the second tier of government undue advantage of meddling into the funds of the third tier without meaningful development in the rural areas.

Speaking on behalf of the union, he equally said the development has incapacitated the third t ier government from performing its constitutional duties to the people.

In conclusion, the union stressed the need for patriots

to step up advocacy on local government autonomy in the interest of the country development, especially the people living in the rural areas.

Ebola: Personal Hygiene Is Keycontinued from pg1

pro-active manner with which they approached the Ebola epidemic. And of particular mention here is the Lagos state govern-ment. In fact, that gov-ernment really exhibited exemplary pro-activeness. a feat would not amount to exaggeration and it shouldn’t be so consid-ered.

This is why we are proud of our governments both at federal and state levels for the pro-active manner with which they approached the Ebola epidemic.

And of particular mention here is the Lagos state government. In fact, that government really exhib-ited exemplary pro-active-ness.

We are indeed proud of her. For with the myriad of problems confronting us as a nation it would have been a disaster writ large for the country should we have failed to contain the

lethal disease. With our population it would have really been disastrous for us if we failed to deal suc-cessfully with the scourge. The question is ‘how many problems would we have been dealing with’? For instance the problem of in-security rather than abate is getting complicated by the day. Quite sad that the admin-istration of President GEJ for the past four years has been preoccupied with how to tackle our security chal-lenges. This has constituted a major distraction for his government making his government’s performance to be at a lowest ebb. Thus wouldn’t it have been un-speakably woeful for his administration to be further preoccupied with another big challenge like EVD? This of course is a rhetorical question. However, as we rejoice over this good news we must not go to sleep with the belief that it’s over. Though it could be regarded as being over in Nigeria, we must not forget that some neigh-bouring West African coun-

tries are still being ravaged by this deadly disease. Thus our joy could only be com-plete when we are able to get rid of Ebola from the shores of Africa, nay, the world at large. In view of this there is a challenge before all of us especially at personal level and the challenge is for us to keep to the rules of hygiene. Personal hygiene is very key in keeping Ebola at bay. Not only Ebola but various types of disease. It’s of course not disputable that personal and environmental hygiene play a pivotal role in keeping diseases at bay from human community. For this reason we must not take personal and environmental hygiene for granted. It’s very import-ant that we adhere strictly to hygienic rules. At personal level we must en-sure that we wash our hands regularly especially before eating or putting anything into our mouth. Washing our hands or making use of sanitizer and washing our fruits properly before eating, is very important. Not only because of Ebola but it’s the key to warding off certain ail-

ments that can arise out of uncleanliness. And it’s very important to mention here that we need to educate our little children in this regard. We must ensure that they imbibe the culture of hand-washing before they eat or swallow anything. Environmental hygiene is next to personal hygiene. We cannot talk of personal hygiene without talking of environmental hygiene. In fact they both go together; hands in glove. For time immemorial the dictum has been that ‘a clean en-vironment promotes good heath’. This is not disput-able. On the contrary a dirty environment provides habitat for diseases and brings about ill-health. Oxford Report And Nigeria’s Poverty RECENTLY, the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHDI), 2014 reportedly put the percentage of Nigerians living in poverty at 43.3 percent. According to the Multi-dimensional Poverty Index (MPI) 2014, released on its website, 19.3 percent of the population remained vulnerable to poverty, while 25.3 percent of Nigerians live in severe poverty.

The OPHDI is an economic research centre within the Oxford Department of International Development at the University of Oxford. Established in 2007, the centre aims to build and advance a more systematic methodological and economic framework for reducing multi-dimensional poverty grounded in peop, while inequality remained high. It said 68.0 percent and 84.5 percent of the Nigerian population lived below $1.25 per day and $2 per day respectively in 2010. The report further stated that the rural areas had the largest number of poor people at 57.5 percent, while 16.1 percent resided in urban areas.

Pundits, while making reference to the Oxford poverty index, noted that several poverty alleviation initiatives of government had failed partly because they were palliative measures, which do not equip the supposed beneficiaries with relevant training and tools to get them out of poverty. They have noted that the way forward was for policy makers to empathise and have a feel of what poverty really is to enable them design effective poverty alleviation programmes. They argued that with respect to financial inclusion and poverty alleviation, the country’s economic growth had failed to translate into improvement in living standards because of the uneven distribution of wealth, as the rich get richer, while the poor becomes poorer.

Earlier, the World Bank had revealed that 100 million Nigerians live in destitution. The revelation was made at the Bank’s programme portfolio review in Enugu, Nigeria. Another statistic puts it that over 60 percent of Nigerians live in extreme poverty, when the nation pumps two million barrels of oil per day and that

just 10 percent of the money, which the political leaders and their cronies fritter away, will reduce the poverty ratio by as much as 30 percent.

I concede that the issue of poverty is a global phenomenon. Over one billion children are said to live in poverty with over 20,000 dying every day due to poverty. Almost 30 percent of the children in developing countries are underweight or stunted. Nigeria has not in any way helped global statistics because the nation is actually above the global average in almost every index.

In Nigeria, severe poverty is a reality, going by the fact that people lack good clothing, education and other basic amenities. They lack basic necessities of life to the extent that one wonders how they survive. There are several factors associated with poverty in the country viz poor health, high infant mortality, low life expectancy; all due to poor condition of the access of the citizenry to basic health care. Some other key factors that contribute to poverty include unemployment, corruption,

non-diversification of the economy, income inequality, laziness and a poor education system. Poverty in Nigeria is so complex and myriad that one may consider it equal to the whole problem the country is facing. Unfortunately, the rich grows richer and the poor grows poorer; poverty for majority and wealth for minority. Poverty in Nigeria remains significant despite the much-touted high economic growth, coupled with the huge natural resources at the nation’s disposal. Compounding the situation is political instability of the country.

The main challenge in reducing poverty is by diversifying the country’s economy from the oil and gas sector-focussed, towards the more labour intensive sectors, while also improving health and education. The oil has increased economic volatility and inflation with those living in poverty being most vulnerable to volatility and inflation. Adding to the problem is the instability of government revenue, and the neglect of agriculture, which provides the major source of income to the poor. Suffice it to say that the oil industry

does not employ a sizeable number of unskilled workers, thereby contributing little towards reducing poverty. Government funds are being misappropriated. Corruption has eaten deep into the government and the economy that everyone seems to be blinded by it.

Selfishness has almost become an accepted way of life, as political leaders practically ignore the affairs and well-being of the people, who elected them into offices, mismanaging and embezzling funds meant for development purposes, leaving the rest of the citizenry to wallow in abject poverty. There are several issues of bad governance such as use of wrong policies, adaptation to wrong policies and implementation of those wrong policies. It is crystal clear that Nigeria’s corruption and the leaders’ selfishness have increased poverty.

It is gratifying; however, that poverty alleviation has once again climbed to the top of global development agenda. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have announced twin programmes of ending extreme poverty and boosting shared prosperity by 2030. Feelers from post-2015 policy debaters suggest that global development goals will focus on eradication of extreme poverty, going forward from 2015. In the meantime, reports from global institutions are making some important prescriptions on poverty alleviation.

In the Nigeria present circumstances, elimination of poverty requires a systematic effort geared at fully exploiting our agricultural resources and shoring up the utilization of the installed capacity in our industries. Governments must strive to totally liberate the creative energies of the people. Of more fundamental importance is the need for government to ensure stability and consistency of policy over a sufficiently long period. Above all, governments must avoid haphazard strategy for the elimination of poverty.

The Bigotry Against AregbesolaI was greatly saddened to read the material written by Mr. Egheomhanre Emmanuel Eyieyien urging “The Remnants” to vote out the current Governor of Osun State Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and vote in Senator Iyiola Omisore. I am also still somewhat puzzled as to how what appeared to be an opposition to a bond issue and other sundry allegations degenerated to the running down of the APC as an Islamic party, a propaganda tool notoriously deployed by the PDP through its various organs.

Are we as Christians now being urged to support the PDP or what exactly is the message? Reason, is one of the most important contributions of the Gospel to development. From it emerge the practical concepts of fairness and justice for all, especially our enemies. Which is why lynching, even of an intellectual kind, is unacceptable.

I am not an unbiased intervenor, I had the good fortune of serving in an AD/ACN government in Lagos State. The ACN is a major partner in the APC. I will come back to the PDP/APC issue presently.

Also, I have known Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, governor of the State of Osun, since 1999. We served on the policy committees of the then newly-elected AD governor of Lagos State. He served in the infrastructure sub-committee and I, in the Justice sub-committee. I also served with him for 8 years in the government of Lagos State. He, as Commissioner for Works and I as Attorney General. I developed a close personal relationship with him. His early ideological belief was shaped by Marxist-Socialist thinking, which probably influences his left-of-centre world view in governance. His first son, Kabir went to a university in Cuba on a scholarship. In 2005, when he graduated, only Rauf and I attended his graduation . He is a devout Muslim but liberal in his approach to other faiths. This is not unusual amongst the Yorubas largely because most families have both Muslim and Christian members and have always interacted without rancour. Of his six siblings, only one other is a Muslim. All the others are Christians. His sister, who is of the RCCG, is widowed (her husband died a Christian) her two sons have lived with Rauf for years, he insists that they must practice their father’s faith faithfully. They both attend the RCCG.

He and I shared and still share a burden to provide honest, transparent, people-centered governance. He is a scrupulously honest person, as Commissioner for Works in Lagos State, he left office without a home and no financial comforts. I know, because aside from my personal and official interaction with him, I coordinated his legal team for the reclamation of his mandate for over three years. I know first-hand, his difficulties with sustaining his family, and a small staff for that period. Not surprisingly, no one can accuse him in the State of Osun of corruption. He is just not wired that way.

Indeed, in keeping with that commitment to serve the people with complete fidelity, his major projects have been solely directed at alleviating the suffering and deprivation of his people. The hiring of, now 40,000 unemployed graduates, the provision of free balanced meals for all primary school children, provision of free uniforms, the provision of tablet computers for senior secondary school students containing all their textbooks, past JAMB questions etc., monthly stipends to the elderly; all of these in a state that is the poorest in federal allocations and currently gets N2.6 billion monthly, a 40 percent reduction from 2013, courtesy of the Federal Government. Mr. Eyieyien perhaps was not aware that even the N10 billion sukuk bond was purely for the building of 24 model state-of-the-art schools, most of which are now completed. The Wole Soyinka-led Osun Education Summit recommended the replacement of the completely broken school infrastructure in Osun with schools capable of accommodating 1000 students with modern laboratories, classrooms, power and sports facilities. The idea was to use economies of scale to benefit the largest number of students.

When Mr. Eyieyien describes him as “Sheikh”, it is clearly to give the impression that he is an Islamic fundamentalist. The facts on the man completely belie this. First, as Commissioner for Works in Lagos State, he built the chapel at the State House Marina.

Pastor Adeboye, at the opening,

commended him and remarked that he would be a pastor soon! Within a year of coming into government, he commissioned in Ilesa, the Open Heavens Christian Evangelical Arena , a purpose-built facility for evangelism, which according to him was to celebrate the icons of the Christian faith, who are from Osun namely: the Late Apostle Babalola , the Late Apostle Obadare, Pastor E.A. Adeboye, Pastor W.F Kumuyi and Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo .

Today, his government supports the establishment of five Christian universities in Osun, including The Redeemers University at Ede, the Joseph Babalola University, Dominion University and Bowen University.

How about the composition of government in the State of Osun? You will notice that his critics are never able to say that Christians are marginalised in government, why ? Because only Muslims can make that allegation! In the cabinet of Osun, there are 10 more Christians than Muslims. In addition, the largest ministries are headed by Christians- Ministries of Finance, Justice, Education, Health, Environment , Agriculture, Physical Planning and Youth and Sports . The Legislature (House of Assembly), which came into office after he won back his mandate in court in November 2010, has a majority of Christian members; 18 Christians and 8 Muslims. Everyone knows that at that level, if the governor does not support your nomination by the party, your ambitions are dead in the water.

The State Judiciary is headed by a Christian, who he appointed although he had preferred and proposed a judge from Lagos, Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, also a non-Muslim. Of over 30 new Permanent Secretaries appointed by him, 22 are Christians. If the majority of your cabinet, (including your Attorney-General), your Legislature, Judiciary and top echelon of your civil service are Christians, how can we in truth say that such a person has an Islamisation agenda? Surely the least a “Sheikh” with an Islamisation agenda should do to achieve his objective is to populate the structure that can achieve that objective with Muslims!

It is also entirely false that he patronizes or uses “TAAWUN” guards for his security. It is common knowledge that he hardly even uses any security at all, except for a couple of SSS men, his monthly LIFE WALKS , where he walks alongside his people for kilometres without any significant security cordon was commended recently by a former governor in the South East.

It is incredible what prejudice can do to us. Everyone in Osun knows that the state was nicknamed “State of the Living Spring” in reference to the Osun River after which the state is named. Renaming the State “the Omoluabi State “ – meaning “the State of children born of God” or “the State of men

and women of virtue” certainly gives greater glory to God.

To suggest that benefiting from a Sukuk bond to better the lives of his people of all faiths, is enough to justify the grave allegation of an Islamisation agenda, is with all due respect , calling a dog a bad name simply to hang it. I agree that it may have served the politics of religion better not to take the bond, but it is a fairer judgment of his motives, knowing him, that this was borne out of his desire to serve his people well.

The 24 mega schools with state-of -the-art facilities is a quantum leap in education for the majority of children of the poor, who before now schooled in what the Soyinka committee saw as scandalous. The alternative was not to build the schools. When a man, who is doing right by the poor and deprived people he governs, is being condemned by those of us who are called to serve the poor, the sick, the naked, and the hungry, then it is fair to ask what the values in governance we really intend to promote are? In any event, the alternative is Senator Iyiola Omisore, whose antecedents we ought, to put it delicately, be cautious to associate with.

A problem with uncritically accepting as useful advice this viciously anti-APC propaganda, is that it throws the baby out with the bath water. So we are now expected to reject the landmark achievements in Lagos, in Ogun (the huge infrastructural developments), Oyo ( which for the first time most admit is making real progress) , Edo, and Ekiti ( where almost everyone agrees the governor did a good job but Fayose understood stomach infrastructure better!) Or now Kano or Rivers (where a real rail service is about to begin; Lagos is also about to complete a rail service amongst other exemplary achievements )!

It is also false that the APC’s new executive reserved its top positions for Muslims! The Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, is a Christian, the Deputy National Chairman (South) Engineer Segun Oni is a Christian, so are the National Organizing Secretary, Senator Osita Izunaso, Deputy National Secretary, Honourable Orji Ugofa and Chief Pius Akinyelure, the Vice Chairman of the South West. For what it is worth, there are 22 Muslims and 21 Christians in the APC National Executive Committee.

Regarding the rather thinly veiled ‘support the PDP/ JONATHAN’ message, it is incredible that we are invited to ignore the cynical manner that our President Goodluck Jonathan uses Christianity and the church to further his political ambitions. Why are we being urged to support a PDP/Jonathan bid again? The platform has largely on account of its tragic failure to perform, decided to exploit Nigeria’s religious fault lines in the most cynical manner to win support, in the process, he continues to divide Nigeria in by the far most extreme manner in our history.

I have worked with many brethren since 2002 on issues around Islamization

in Nigeria, in particular with Revd. Ladi Thompson of the Macedonian Initiative and the Omoluabi Network. It is clear that Al Qaeda, ISIS , and more recently, Boko Haram and their splinters are committed to an Islamization agenda. Their symphathisers certainly cut across all boundaries.

The Late General Azazi, then NSA, pointedly accused the PDP of being behind the escalation of Boko Haram. I have that statement on DVD. The President, also openly lamented the infiltration of his cabinet by the Boko Haram. Recently a Nigerian pastor in a widely circulated CD, speaking on the Jihadist agenda accused General Babangida of funding the Islamization agenda from his days as President. Today President Jonathan’s most influential Northern supporter is General Babangida. His narrative unfortunately gives no credit to General Buhari, and his deputy Gen Idiagbon (also a Muslim) who refused to join the OIC despite pressures. Or that General Buhari remains the one Head of State who was able to defeat an extremist insurgency, the Maitatsine.

How can we fail to see that the incredible corruption, incompetence, poverty of 2/3 of our people after almost seven years of the present government is unsupportable? How is it that Diezani’s use of N10 billion to run her private jet (the same amount of money for the building of 24 mega schools in Osun!) and the complete silence of the President on this travesty does not lead to calling for him to be voted out in 2015? So the allegation of the missing or unaccounted for $20.8 billion with 110 million desperately poor, should be dismissed as pure propaganda? So it doesn’t make a difference to us that under the PDP, Nigeria has fallen behind in every human development indicator? 55,000 women dying yearly of maternal-related ailments. Only recently, Stanford’s Professor Larry Diamond compared the yearly deaths of over 300,000 children yearly in Nigeria to the killing of 800, 000 mainly Tutsis in Rwanda. The latter was described as genocide, what is the description to give to mass deaths of infants caused by grand corruption?

We discredit our treasured platforms such as this when we mask our political preferences with a religious veil. The vast majority of our people need to be delivered from terrible want and deprivation, what is required now are capable, honest men

Is Buhari The De Gaulle Nigeria THE current national imbroglio may be over, if General Muhammad Buhari is voted into power, come February 2015, and the army general-now-turned democrat, will follow the footsteps of Charles De Gaulle of France, who was the man of the moment in the crucial hour of that nation.

De Gaulle was a statesman, dominant military and political leader of France for much of the period from 1940 to 1969. Like Buhari, he was a man of integrity, who refused to accept armistice with German invaders in 1940, and thereby set up his base in London, proclaimed himself the incanation of France, and created the Free French Movement. During the war, he rallied the overseas colonies (especially Africa), organized the resistance from abroad, and struggled to gain full recognition from the British and Americans. He was a firm proponent of democracy, who later became the leader of the Provisional Government of France following its liberation in 1944.

De Gaulle like Buhari, was a retired military officer; a Brigadier General, who retired in 1946, but returned in 1958 as France verged on civil war over the Algerian crisis. He was voted in as President in 1958 to 1969; the New fifth Republic of France. De Gaulle was a political stabilizer; who stabilized the turbulent political system of France, and restored the nation’s economy. He made France to dominate the European Common Market by vetoing British entry and keeping the U.S at arm’s length.

It is on record that Buhari overthrew a democratically elected government of Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Shagari of NPN on the 31st of December 1983. The military intervention was welcomed by majority of Nigerians, who were already disgusted by the corrupt and ineptitude regime that had just rigged its second term election. The Buhari/Idiagbon wrought changes that remained a reference point till date. “War Against Indiscipline” led to orderliness in every sector of Nigeria. For the short period the regime lasted, war against corruption and criminality were successfully fought.

Buhari’s Decree 4 of 1984 and the retroactive decree that led to the summary execution of Ojuolape and others for drug trafficking were dents on the new democrat record, but show me any of our past and present head of state and governments that does not have a ‘but’ or short comings , then I will show you a

virgin in a maternity ward. Every saint has a past. Paul the apostle, in the Bible, described himself as head of the sinners, who was not qualified to proclaim the gospel of Christ. Paul eventually wrote more than half of the New Testament books.

De Gaulle was accused for being critical to criticism, he eventually resigned his leadership position, but his reputation as the greatest of French leaders since Napoleon remains unbeatable till date.

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan must have done his best, but his has not been good enough to succour the nation from its multitude problems; such as shortage of power, unemployment, insecurity, economy downturn, poor health facilities. The various elections so far conducted under Jonathan have been under the jack-boot of the security agents. While other African countries such as Ghana and South Africa have made a lot of improvement, Nigerian elections have been characterized by executive intimidation and daylight rigging. President Jonathan has continued to defend the anomalies in our electoral processes. He has equally justified the use of soldiers and other security agents as a

necessary evil. But by now, our leaders ought to live beyond anti-democratic practices. Democracy is about freedom of choice as guaranteed by the Constitution. Nigerians must be allowed to determine those who govern them through the ballot.

The August 9, 2014 governorship election in Osun, where about 100, 000 security agents and sniffing dogs were deployed to “capture” Osun and the insistence of the Presidency to rob the people of their choice, despite their resistance, is a dangerous signal to what Jonathan can do in the February 2015 general elections. The opposition must be at alert as we approach the campaigns and the election. It was Nicole Machavali, who described power as sword, and that once it is worn, everything should be done to keep it. The PDP will not surrender power easily to any opposition, but with vigilant and internal cooperation among those who want a change, PDP is beatable. De Gaulle oversaw the development of French atomic weapons and promoted foreign policy independent of ‘ Anglo Saxim’ . The Buhari administration, if voted in, should be able to take us beyond clueless foreign policy, to a new era, where our voice as a nation would not only he heard, but we must be seen as a leading African

nation that other countries in the continent will be willing and happy to follow through pragmatic and dynamic foreign policy.

“Our friends at the Republican convention were more than happy to talk about everything they think is wrong with America, but they didn’t have much to say about how they would make it right. They want your vote, but they don’t want you to know their plan.” This President Barack Obama’s statement is applicable to the Nigerian leaders since 1999 that have been running the nation adrift.

The ruling party has been talking about how they would fixed our economy, oil price had been sold for $106 for 15 years, yet the number of jobless youths keeps being on the ascendancy, health sector is worse hit, as health workers and doctors have closed down the hospitals till today; poor funding of tertiary institutions, poor road network across the nation. The Nigerian Immigration Service recruitment tragedy is an open secret. Till date, nobody has been held responsible for it. Neither did Mr. President fulfiled the promise made to relatives, who lost their loved ones over jobs that were never available.

The Chibok girls adoption tragedy, the late response to the incidence and the politics introduced to the calamity, will forever haunt this present Federal Government, whose constitutional responsibility it is, as encapsulates in Section 14 sub-section 4 of 1999 Constitution; to ensure security and welfare of the citizens. Till date, the Boko Haram insurgency has become octopus, that has killed thousands of people and are still killing and maiming.

On the accusation of religious bigotry against Buhari, we must not allow religion to destroy our nation, Buhari himself has admitted that he is not a Muslim fanatic, what we should do is to accept what Sir. Ahmadu Bello told the Christians mission that “Differences in religions need not bar people from working together for the good of all.” Alhaji Bello further told the great Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe that we cannot forget our differences as suggested by the latter, rather he stated: “ No, let us understand our differences. I am a Muslim and a northerner. You are a Christian, an Easterner. By understanding our differences, we can build unity in our country.” Buhari’s first daughter got married to a

Speech of the Wife of the governor, Mrs Sherifat aregbesola, at the 2014 end of the Year Children’s Party held at the government House grounds, Okefia, Osogbo on Wednesday, December 17, 2014

IT is my pleasure to be here today as part of the activities to mark the end of the year 2014. I thank God

Almighty for giving us the grace to be alive today and I warmly welcome all of you here.

As you know, it is our tradition in the State of Osun to celebrate our people, especially our children regularly. The philosophy behind this is very simple. Government is about the people and a responsible government would always make people the centre of attention at all times. Here in the state, our administration places the highest priority on the welfare and happiness of our people. We believe that this is the only way we can truly say we have a democracy.

Therefore, bringing together our children from different socio-economic background on occasions such as this would further inculcate in them high sense of belonging. It would oil the spirit of unity and enhance peace and joy in our state. I wish to use this opportunity to plead with our parents and guardians to continue to improve on the care and attention being given to the children. We should ensure that we see to their good health and happiness at all times. We should also train them to inculcate the virtues and the culture

of our people. Most importantly, I urge you to make the education of our children a top priority. There is no excuse for any child not to go to school

any longer in the State of Osun given the comprehensive free education policy of the state government.

We should understand that education

paves way for better living standard in the world.

Just as our parents have crucial role to play in the life of our children, we as children also have our duties and responsibilities. Every child has the responsibility to be good child to his or her family and to the society at large. You should respect your parents, teachers, leaders, and the elderly in our society. I also urge you to refrain from all kinds of misbehaviours that could negatively affect the society. You should grow up as true citizens who come from a state that enthrones the virtues of Omoluabi.

Although we are celebrating here

today, let us individually pray for the children who are at the moment denied the comfort of their families. These are the Chibok girls who have been kidnapped and are yet to be released for a long time now. We should pray for their safe release and peace in our nation.

Finally, I thank our leader, the

Governor of the State, my husband, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola for his endless love and affection for the children of the state. I also thank the organizers of this program. My special thanks go to the staff of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs and those of the Office of the Wife of the Governor for your efforts. I wish you a merry Xmas and a prosperous 2015.

Thank you all.

OPeN Letter tO GOVerNOr areGbesOLaMy Dear Mr. Governor,

cONsIder PLacING a baN ON retaILING Of cOOkING Gas frOm cyLINders

Following the recent gas explosion that rocked Akure, the Ondo State capital, where several people were injured and properties destroyed, it is imperative that I bring to your notice the need for your urgent intervention in the dispensing of cooking gas from cylinders to cylinders to avoid impending catastrophe as we should not wait for it to happen before we act. This act of retail business is illegal under the Nigerian petroleum act as it is not known to law.You must be aware that this kind of dangerous business is very common in Osogbo,Ile-Ife and Ilesha.

I ask that you kindly, as a matter of urgency, place a ban on the sale of cooking gas from retail outlets using gas cylinders some of which are outdated and expired. Every individual and bulk users of cooking gas should be encouraged to fill their gas cylinders at certified cooking gas filling plants under the most safety standards in compliance with regulations. Many of these retailers may say they are looking for money and going about their businesses to earn a living, but you cannot be earning a living putting innocent lives in danger. They can come together and set up a cooking gas filling plant in compliance with regulations and safety procedures and earn a decent living.

I am aware that after the sad incident in Ondo State, the state government has placed an embargo on the retail stores. My fear now is that some of these people may find their way to the State of Osun to continue their illegal and dangerous business. Sir, you must act before it is too late; we must prevent this impending danger from occurring as the consequences might be too grief to bear as most of these retails stores are right in the mist of populated areas where people live.

I trust you will handle this matter with the urgency it deserves as you have a reputation as a performing and action Governor who has the interest of the generality of the people at heart.

Yours faithfully,

Pastor, Please, Don’t Pray NonsenseopiNioN

RECENTLY, a pastor visiting from Nigeria walked into a church here in the US and gleefully introduced himself as the National Prayer Coordinator for “JONATHAN RE-ELECTION 2015”. In his subconscious, the title of a Prayer Co-ordinator for President Jonathan should be the master key that opens all doors in any church pastored by a Nigerian. Jonathanian pastors also believe that Christians should automatically fall head-over-heels in love with Jonathan and then vote for him because he is a Christian.

They also want us to see all Moslem candidates as terrorists we should be afraid of. But Nigerians are smarter than these propagandist religious bigots. I am not sure of other regions in Nigeria. In the South-West from where I come, Christian and Moslem parents did not raise their children to hate or abhor anyone based on religious beliefs. Christians and Moslems have no problem co-mingling almost in all things, and we’ve always had a wonderful time together.

The visiting pastor then requested that he be given an opportunity to bless the congregation with the Word of God. My pastor friend denied his request; not because the visiting pastor had on a political badge, but because many pastors in the US are very careful touching pastors from Nigeria who they do not know well. We all know why. It is good and Godly to pray for our leaders. I am just curious, however, to know the prayer focus of this

particular prayer group. If the pastors are asking God to

protect and shield the president from harm and hurt, I say ‘Amen’ to that; that he will not die before his time, I agree and say ‘Amen’ to that too; that God will grant him wisdom to rule and direct Nigeria aright in the next six months of his tenure, a loud ‘Amen’ to that. These and more are the prayers I will continue to say for the President until May 29th, 2015. Six years as President are good enough for any human-being with or without shoes.

But, if this pastor and his team are asking God to get the president re-elected, they are praying amiss. Any prayer prayed amiss, God is not bound to answer. God knows that Nigerians are sick-and-tired of being sick-and-tired of the PDP. Many Nigerians are crying and dying and hurting and hungry under the misrule of this party in a land that has it all.

Just yesterday, Jonathan’s Federal Ministry of Power stated on its website that the energy sent out by the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) has dropped to 2,954.51 megawatts (MW). When a government drops the ball, everything continues to drop. PDP has dropped the ball! For those pastors who are praying, please don’t pray nonsense that God will not answer.

Sources has it that our very own star boy, Wizzy, in his usual manner, came into the event late and was shocked to discover that no seat was reserved for him. He stormed out of the event in anger and missed the entire show . Since he wasn’t called upon for any award, am sure he wasn’t missed at all. Well, better luck next year bro!!!!.

HAVING a well-trimmed tummy these days have proven to be a very stressful and tedious process but believe

it or not, there are some foods that help eliminate belly fat. They include:

1. fruIts aNd VeGetabLesAll fruits and vegetables, due to their rich nutrients and

fiber content, help to combat chronic inflammation. So, make sure to include adequate amounts of these foods daily. Some terrific anti-inflammatory fruits and vegetables to include in your meal daily include apples, berries, broccoli, mushrooms, papaya, pineapples and spinach.

2. GreeN tea. This mild beverage is great for helping shrink your

waistline, as well as for decreasing inflammation. The flavonoids in this tea have natural anti-inflammatory properties.

3. OmeGa-3 fatty acIds Research has shown that a diet with a high percentage of

Omega-3 fatty acids and a low percentage of Omega-6 fatty acids has been linked with decreased inflammation. Food sources of Omega-3 include walnuts, flax seed and fish.

4. sPIces Certain spices, including garlic, turmeric, Cinnamon,

ginger and Chilli peppers have potent inflammation-reducing capabilities.

5. Water Staying hydrated is essential in flushing inflammation-

FINALLY, we are at that part of the year, when we share and celebrate without restrictions or

limitations. Basically, this season is all about giving. Gifts are exchanged amongst families, friends and loved ones.

Before you pick a gift for an individual this festive period, you have to consider your finance and the individual’s need for whatever item you tend to purchase, so as not to spend a ridiculous amount on something that wouldn’t be of use to whoever it is being purchased for.

Here are a few tips on shopping for gifts this Christmas.

WHeN sHOPPING fOr a Lady

Buy something that shows your appreciation to her for always being there. If there is that particular item that she has been day-dreaming about, either in the kitchen or wardrobe, purchase it.

Ladies tend to love shoes, bags, clothes, perfumes, makeup items, kitchen utensils, etc.

There are wide ranges to pick from, if you are scouting for a feminine gift

sHOPPING fOr tHe meNThe men are less-choosy compared

to the female folks. We ladies should shop for classy accessories like wristwatches, ties, cufflinks, belts, perfumes, shoes and socks. You can also purchase clothes, if you are sure it will be deeply appreciated by whoever is to receive it.

Please note that both for the males and females, you can shop for a book by your partner’s favourite author.

sHOPPING fOr tHe kIdsEverybody knows its super easy

to please kids. Very simple and less-brainstorming take place when you are trying to decide what gift to buy for a child this Xmas.

- Purchase colourful toys (kids love toys!)

- Buy fancy clothes or shoes for the child

- Buy lots of candy Its Christmas please cut them some

slacks on the sweets restrictions.

RANDOM acts of kindness are a means by which we make

a deliberate attempt to brighten another person’s day by doing something thought fu l , n ice , and caring. Kindness is a way of showing others that they count and that, even in the face of hostility and selfishness, you’re making a stand for kindness.

Originally associated with Anne Herbert, who is said to have once written: “Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty” on a place mat in a restaurant. This concept has become an organised celebration through various events around the world, as well as referring to a general call to action in the name of kindness. And you don’t need to wait for someone else to initiate a day or week of celebrations to practice random acts of kindness; you can put them into play anytime you like, especially this festive period.

By doing kind acts for others, you’re helping to create kindness-aware communities that value generosity of spirit, action, and kindness toward others as essential parts of a healthy community. Here are some suggestions for encouraging others with your random acts of kindness .

be kind: Kindness as an attitude is infectious. When you’re willing to share your kindness, others will be inspired by your example and think about doing something as kind themselves. Fan that flame by being kind to everyone.

b e t h o u g h t f u l : Random acts of kindness can be shown through thoughtfulness about the needs of others. How many times do you wish someone could have been more thoughtful before they did or said something? Try to be an example of this for others to follow. Put someone else first! Consider a stranger before yourself.

When you’re stuck in

traffic and the last thing you want to do is let a car get in front of you, just remember that somebody else had to let you in, and repay the favour to the next person!

Use your manners as a form of kindness. Manners aren’t dead, they’ve just been forgotten in many ways. Yet, manners are the bedrock of courteous and kind relations and their use is an indication of respect for others. Hold doors open for others, hold an umbrella over someone in the rain, and be on time for everyone you’ve promised to meet. Say thank you. Whenever anyone does something for you, be grateful and let them know it.

Give out compliments generously: There’s usually an awkward silence when you’re stuck in a room full of strangers or waiting in a queue with a stranger. Instead of staring at the floor, find something you like about the other person and compliment him/her on it. Not only will it make him/her feel good, it just might kick off a conversation with a new friend. Surprise your neighbour by telling him or her how pretty he/she looks today.

Te l l y o u r a s s i s t a n t how truly clever he/she is and mean it. Praise any subordinate who’s stayed late or done anything extra on the job honestly. Notice those things. Praise your child for her/his skills and good thinking. Make it something out of the blue that you’ve noticed rather than run-of-the-mill schoolwork or chores. Write a handwritten note to a friend or family member telling them how much you care about them.

Think about people who quietly make a difference to your community and thank them: Think of all the people in your life whose faces and names you’ll never know but who serve and protect you day after day.

Send some pre packaged t r e a t s l i k e d o n u t s o r pastries to your local police station, paramedics, or fire department, with a card letting them know how much you appreciate their service to the community. Also make sure to also acknowledge the people we take more for granted. Those that are always at our beck and call.

Cheer up the lonely: Lonely people are everywhere, in all walks of life, of all ages. Helping lonely people to feel wanted is a hugely rewarding random act of kindness.

Pack gifts and foods for strangers. You can even write letters to them. Think of all the people who are lonely, isolated or just in need of company, motivation, material things you don’t need: soldiers fighting, homeless people on the street, people in prisons and detentions, kids in motherless homes. You can ask around on their whereabouts or make search online.

Pray for those that need your prayers more than you do. Those that are in one pain or the other. Those that are are going through pains, hurts heartbreak or storm. Pray for those that are lost, struggling to find their way back.

Do you ever see homeless people and feel overwhelmed by your inability to make a difference? Even if you can’t save them all, you can do a lot with one small act. When buying things for yourself or loved ones, you can buy few extras for those that cannot afford it. Instead of through away excess foods, clothes and the likes, you can pack them in appealing ways and give to those that are in need of it.

Share a l i t t le wealth a r o u n d : F i n a n c i n g charitable works, giving out scholarships to students that cannot afford adequate educa t i on , pay ing fo r hospital bills of patients with financial troubles, donating items to orphanage and less

privileged, supporting and establishing those that have dreams but incapable of support themselves monetarily.

Forgive somebody: You’d be amazed at the ripple effect an ounce of forgiveness can have in your life and in the lives of others. Unburden yourself of the past and think kind thoughts again about that person.

Share a smile. When meeting a new person, or even chatting with an old one, express joy. Show that you’re happy to be with them, and that they make you happy. Happiness is contagious. Be merely seeing you smile, you can unconsciously put a smile on a stranger’s face.

If you meet someone grumpy and frowning, give them your smile. Make them lighten up if you can. Just give give them a reason to forget their troubles for a while. Don’t see it as their bad mood reflecting negatively on you; instead, make it about how you can help them to feel better.

Expect nothing: The greatest act of kindness is the one that is freely given because you care about another person and want them to be happy and you don’t expect anything in return. The thing about kindness is that it has its own rewards and will improve your sense of well-being and happiness.

T h i s s e a s o n i s n ’ t solely for loved ones or those that we are familiar with, but also for those we do no t know. I t is a time we celebrate life, share hope and be grateful for everything. Both with friends, family and strangers. It is not all about having excess at our disposal but touching lives positively in any way we can. So as we go about reuniting with old friends and family, being merry and joyous this time of the year, we should remember

PENULTIMATE Thursday, d e l e g a t e s o f t h e A l l P r o g r e s s i v e s

Congress (APC) converged at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos to elect General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) as the flagbearer of the party. The presidential primary conducted by the APC was certainly one of the best in recent times. It took delegates over twenty hours to return the party’s flag bearer in the primary election. Buhari had contested for the presidency three times in the past on the ticket of the All Nigeria’s Peoples Party (ANPP) and the Congress of Progressive Change (CPC) but lost. To his detractors, he is a perennial contestant for the presidency and should not be taken serious. However, the fact that most delegates embraced his choice is pregnant with a lot of meanings.

The Daura-Katsina State-born retired Army General is not new to Nigerians. He has held strategic offices in the past among which were the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 3rd Armoured Division in Jos, Plateau State. Buhari was also a Minister for Petroleum Resources before becoming the Military Head of State as a result of the military putsch that terminated the government of President Shehu Shagari in December, 1983. The APC standard bearer was also the chairman of Petroleum Trust Fund during the General Sani Abacha-led government.

GMB, as he is fondly called by his admirers, is integrity personified, very humble to a fault and very honest. He is also a factual person, who calls situation as it is and not to colour it. Unfortunately, the attributes mentioned of him above is a rare commodity among Nigerian politicians.

To be able to sail through the presidential primaries, he had to access loan from his bank to pay for the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms.

For all anybody cares, many politicians have seen politics not as a selfless service to humanity as posited by the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, but an investment, which should be recouped in a very short time. So, for a Nigerian, who has traversed the political ladder to the top as Head of State and there is no corruption linkage with him, is a serious plus to him.

As an undergraduate at the University of Jos, Jos, in the early

eighties, Buhari was the Patron of the Area Unit of the Muslim Students’ Society (MSS). He was the GOC at the Rukuba Cantonment, Jos. By the structure of MSS, the university within the area, where MSS branches are, has the Area Unit at the apex. I was the Vice-chairman with Bro Akintola as my chairman. We accessed him most time we needed to. That also brings me to an issue which transpired between him and his Commander-In-Chief, Alhaji Shehu Shagari. Nigeria had border clashes with Chad. Nigerian troops had been deployed to the border front and the troops were in action when the C-in-C decided to ask them to withdraw. The GOC prevailed on his boss, why withdrawal was not expedient at that material time. As the Head of State, ably supported by his late deputy, Brigadier Tunde

Idiagbon, he was able to instill discipline into Nigerians. The War Against Indiscipline (WAI), which involved the queue ethics and orderliness in public places was introduced. The duo of Buhari and Idiagbon lived by example and they tolerated no nonsense. They were hard on politicians and like all military governments, rule of law was put in abeyance.

They fought corruption and were seen to be fighting corruption. The Buhari junta set aside one week in 1984 for the change of national currency which many thought was not possible but they never extended the date. As an undergraduate, I was a victim because most people were hard up and could not believe that it was possible to set a target and keep to it.

It is an open secret that the palace coup that ousted the government was

carried out by the fifth columnists holding strategic positions in the government.

Today, the Buhari government has been vindicated. The major challenge bedeviling our society now is corruption yet the government of President Goodluck Jonathan seems helpless. The anti-Buhari elements would swing into action very soon. They will label him all sorts of names, but the truth of the matter is that he is incorruptible and ready to wage serious war against crimes militating against our development. They will call him religious bigot; some will refer to him as a brutal dictator who put all politicians in jail regardless of their misdemeanor.

But we have got to a point in our political history, where like the Israelites in Egypt, we need a leader than would deliver us. For our current milieu, the person that can do it is GMB.

If a Nigerian, particularly a top politician keeps to time, it is considered abnormal. The trend runs through every facet of our lives. Laws are meant to be obeyed by the common people, for the top shots in the society, they can break them with reckless abandon. This explains why if you see a Nigerian like GMB, who has taken appointments at different levels, culminating in being a Head of State and still live a spartan life, then one begins to wonder really if he is a Nigerian.

In Nigeria , today to have an audience with your elected councilor is very difficult not to talk of an honourable member of the State House of Assembly or that of the House of Representatives. For a Senator or a Governor, it is like a camel passing through the proverbial eye of a needle. For the top shots of the society, it is always us and them.

There a r e , however, f ew achievers, who are stickler to time on occasions; the late Professor Olikoye Ransome Kuti and our own Justice Bola Babalakin. Babalakin, a retired Jurist of the Supreme Court, exhibited that trait recently, when we attended an Islamic programme together at Royal Spring Hotel, Osogbo.

The ret i red just ice of the Supreme Court was an invited guest, but some few minutes to the commencement, Mr Oyesiku Adelaku, as the compere, was emphatic that Babalakin would be there before the programme
