I n the midst of inaugural celebrations, Super Bowl celebrations, and Mardi Gras celebrations …let’s have our own celebration! On February 22 at 7:00 pm, St. Thomas will host a “Celebration of New Ministry.”
You may think this has something to do with your new Rector. It does, in a way, but a Rector without a congregation seems like a wheel without a cart. The wheel and cart may be perfectly designed for the task at hand, but without connection between the two there is no function and no forward movement. It takes all of us, working together, learning together, and serving together to create progress and results.
If who we are and what we do is birthed in Christ, then acts of thanksgiving are not only right and proper but they become defining moments in our life together. Sunday Eucharist (which means “thanksgiving”) is our weekly defining moment that not only lays expression to “who” we are, but also to
“whose” we are. We belong to the victorious Christ who has promised to be with us until the end of time. That being said, it is not too difficult to understand that in him “we live and move and have our being.” If that’s not something to celebrate, I don’t what is!
The inaugural celebrants gather around their new president; the Super Bowl celebrants cheer for their winning team; Mardi Gras celebrants …well, I’m a bit stumped by that one, ask Joann! But we, St. Thomas’ celebrants, will gather around our Lord as we give thanks for his gracious blessings in bringing us back to life and purpose. That is what we celebrate when we gather on the February 22. Join us as we celebrate this new era of our connected lives together.
Blessings,
Fr.Bruce+

New Year’s Day at St. Thomas’
T HE CR OSS TI ES
Parishioners attending Coffee Hour after church on January 1 were welcomed with all the traditional foods of New Year's Day. The menu featured black-eyed peas, turnip greens and ham soup, and cornbread squares. Assorted fruits, baskets of muffins, and a variety of desserts completed the bill of fare. Gracious hostess Deb Heyvaert was greeted with excitement about her menu choices as well as the attractive manner in which the delicious foods were presented.
It was a well received after church celebration!
Let There Be Quilts! Barbara Massengill, who made her first quilt in 1980, shared her gorgeous quilts and her knowledge of quilting with the Women of the Church on January 16. As each new quilt was unfolded, the "oohs and ahhs" grew louder and louder and the intricate workmanship took our breath away. Comments such as "stunning" and "fabulous" were heard all around the room. At the end of her presentation, Barbara used this quote by an unknown author:
"In the presence of a quilt, you can feel the silent rhythms of life and the songs of the soul stitched into the fabric."

Add chicken broth and tomatoes. Increase heat and bring to a boil. Add greens. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes until greens are tender. Stir in peas/beans and ham, and season with salt and pepper. Simmer an additional 15-20 minutes. Season to taste. As most Southern cooks know, proportions are simply suggestions. Feel free to change ingredients or amounts. Fresh turnips may be added. Mustard or collards may be substituted or added. (I don't add garlic.) Season to your own taste. Serves 6. May be frozen.

WOC Meeting- January 16th, 2017
Twenty-eight ladies, including one guest, gathered Monday, January 16, at 11:00 a.m., for the monthly Women of the Church meeting. The devotion of the day, based on Proverbs 1:5, was presented by Darlynda Patterson. It centered on the importance of listening, and the acrostic LISTEN (Listen, Examine, Apply, Remember, Notice) called attention to the importance of Christian practice of these attributes.
Parishioner Barbara Massengill presented a fascinating program on the history and art of quilting, highlighted by her artistic creations. Twenty-four quilts were featured, exhibiting choice
of materials, theme and color.
Popular theme quilts were those featuring Christmas motifs and zodiac symbols. Of special interest was the display and explanation of a quilt exhibiting the so-called slave quilt code.
During the brief business session that followed, minutes of the December meeting were read and approved. Treasurer Pat Caviness presented an updated report of the Women of the Church account, currently containing $8,618.00.
Raffle items included a devotional book, Jesus Calling, contributed by Elizabeth Zeph and won by Alice Anne Ford. Additional raffle items, floral arrangements, were won by Cynthia Moorman, visitor Irene Smith, and presenter Barbara Massengill.
A delicious chili lunch was served to all present. The meal was prepared by Frances Floyd, with cost underwritten by Jane Escher.

Prayer for Quiet Confidence
O God of peace, who hast taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that thou art God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
