OSPAR Regional Action Plan for Marine Litter OSPAR has the objective to substantially reduce marine litter in the North-East Atlantic area. To reach this goal, which is in line with the objectives of the

EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), the Regional Action Plan for Marine Litter was adopted in 2014. As a part of the marine litter comes

from the fishing sector, the plan also includes actions on plastic garbage from the fishing sector, i.e. on best practices to prevention, fishing for litter,

ghost nets and dolly rope. In this context, OSPAR, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom are organizing this work session.

Inventory of marine litter best practices for the fishing sector

A questionnaire was sent to the different countries being members of the OSPAR convention which resulted in an overview of the different measures and

best practices concerning marine litter management in the fishing industry (you can find the report here).

The work session will focus on the practical experiences with preventing new garbage from the fishing sector to end up in the oceans, especially concerning the handling of plastic domestic waste and discarded fishing gear on board of fishing vessels and in fishing harbours. By discussing the practices with participants from the fishing sector, waste companies, harbours and other organizations new ways for better waste management and prevention will be explored. This afternoon we will have inspiring presentations from different initiatives across Europe, including:

- Marek Press, from the Keep the Estonian Sea Tidy Association, about the MARELITT Project and the experiences in port waste management in the Baltic Sea. - Kenny Baas, from Bek en Verburg, a Dutch specialist in marine waste management, about the Dutch Green Deal approach.

- Chiara Vitali and Karin Bilo, from the World Animal Protection, about the Global Ghost Gear Initiative’s Best Practice Framework and best practices on marine litter management.

- Julia Olsen, from the Nordland Research Institute, about the local and regional practices on marine garbage reduction in Northern Norway. - Marisa Fernández, head of the Department of Control and Management of Marine Environment & Resources at CETMAR and project leader of the recently

launched CleanAtlantic project, about fishing for litter collaborative projects developed by CETMAR and information about the CleanAtlantic project.

Besides the inspiring initiatives, we will have an official scoop: Anna Bobo Remijn, from the European Commission, will come to give a first preview of the Review Port Facilities Directive, which will not be published until the beginning of December 2017.

Arrival By Public Transport Arrival By Bike

Ahoy Rotterdam is located just next to Metro- and Busstation Zuidplein. From Rotterdam Central Station you can take Metro D (Direction: De Akkers) or Metro E (Direction: Slinge) and Bus 44 (Direction: Zuidplein). A ticket for two metro trips can be bought at the entrance of the

Rotterdam Central Metro Station. A ticket for the bus can be bought inside the bus. Please be aware of possible engineering work or maintenance on the metro to Zuidplein. The Rotterdam Public Transport Authorities are working on the metrorails around Zuidplein in 2017. You can check any complications and plan your journey by public transport here.

Ahoy Rotterdam is pretty easy to get to for cyclists and they offer (unattended) parking. From Rotterdam CS it is a 6 km biking route to Ahoy and will take approximately 25 minutes to arrive. You can schedule your route here Many bicycle renting facilities are

located around Rotterdam Central Station.

Arrival by Plane

Ahoy Rotterdam is less than an hour away from Schiphol Amsterdam Airport and Rotterdam The Hague Airport. From both airports you can travel to Rotterdam or Ahoy quickly and comfortably on public transport and by car.

Arrival By Car

If you arrive by car from any direction, take the Ring Rotterdam-Zuid (Rotterdam South) A15. On the A15 take the exit 19A with direction ‘Zuidplein’ and ‘Ahoy’. After the exit follow the signs ‘Ahoy’. The car parks at Ahoy Rotterdam offer space to 2.000 vehicles. Cars can be

parked all day for €13.00.
