Band Descriptions

Wildcat Band This band is organized for the purpose of providing an extension of those band experiences that began in the middle school. A varied program of activities and performances is an essential part of this performance-oriented ensemble. Besides at least three formal concerts, students will be involved in pep band performances at football and basketball games, three parades, and other special appearances. This ensemble meets in two sections each day of the week. On most days, both sections will meet simultaneously, while sectionals are pulled each day for a more individualized instruction. Skill development, as well as growth in musicianship, will be emphasized. Solo and Ensemble participation is not required, but is highly encouraged. Concert Band This band is composed of those students who, on the basis of ability and attitude, reflect a maturity that will enable them to experience the study of a more sophisticated wind literature in at least three formal concerts. Further, students will be involved in pep band performances for football and basketball games, three parades, and other special appearances. This ensemble meets five days per week for full rehearsals. Emphasis on further development of musicianship, performance skills, and musical understanding will be stressed. Solo and Ensemble participation is not required, but is highly encouraged. Varsity Band This band is a very select group open only to the most musically mature and technically skilled students. The study and performance of highly sophisticated and musically challenging wind and percussion literature is emphasized. Besides the three formal concerts, students will also be involved in pep band performances at basketball and football games, three parades, and other special appearances. This ensemble meets five days per week for full rehearsals. Each section may be required to have one sectional each week to be scheduled outside of the normal rehearsal. Each member of this ensemble is required to either perform a solo or ensemble at either the WSMA Festival, or in some other venue in the community. Wind Ensemble This is the most select group open only to the most musically mature and technically skilled students. The study and performance of highly sophisticated and musically challenging wind and percussion literature is emphasized. Besides four formal concerts, students will also participate in pep band for basketball and football games, three parades, and other special performances. Wind Ensemble members are required to participate in a sectional each week to be scheduled outside of the normal rehearsal. Solo and Ensemble participation is required of all members in this ensemble. Many Wind Ensemble members will be asked to participate with the Oshkosh West Symphony Orchestra. Placement with this group will be based on director recommendation, and possibly by audition. This ensemble is the premier instrumental ensemble at our school and is asked to represent our department, school, and community on several occasions. Jazz Ensemble This ensemble is open to any student who participates in one of the OWHS Concert Bands. Exceptions to this policy are only made for guitar, bass, and piano players, if no students in the band program are available to cover these instruments. The group performs various styles of Jazz including swing, Latin, funk, and many others. This ensemble is considered an extension of the band program and will offer students a challenge above and beyond the normal band curriculum. The study of jazz style, technique, improvisation, and history is emphasized in this course. Students will study and perform jazz in both the “big band” and “combo” settings. This ensemble meets five days per week and on many occasions, performs in the community and may have the opportunity to travel for clinics and performance festivals.

Summer Marching Band This course is open to all Oshkosh West High School Band or Twirl Team members. This class will focus on the development of marching fundamentals with a long-term goal of providing halftime entertainment during the football season. This course will meet in the summer to prepare for the upcoming school year, and class times will be late afternoons in August for two weeks only. Emphasis will be placed on musical, technical, and marching execution and the band will perform at the competitive level.

These bands have a tradition of being great groups and we show the true spirit of the Wildcats when we represent our school on the field, street, or in the performance hall. Therefore, it is very important that you take your band seriously and attend all rehearsals. No matter what grade, instrument, or ability level you are at, you are vital to keeping this band tradition alive!!!

Respect and Class Rules

In place of an endless list of rules for students to follow, there is one general rule for the band room and only a few other specifics. The main rule that governs the band room is RESPECT. If everyone in this classroom respects each other, much more learning and music making will occur. If at any point someone is being disrespectful, the Director of Bands or Associate Director of Bands will deal with him or her accordingly. The following rules apply: 1. Do not chew gum in the band room. 2. Do not talk while the director is on the podium. 3. Every member must have music, pencils, and instruments at all rehearsals and performances. 4. Always cooperate with band staff including director, drum major, and section leaders. 5. Never assume ANYTHING. Check the bands website for all information. 6. Be on time for all rehearsals and performances. “To be early is to be on time.” 7. Every member is financially responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen school property including uniforms,

music, and instruments. Be careful when away from the school and make sure you have EVERYTHING! 8. Only members of the OWHS Marching/Pep Band will sit in the stands designated “Band Area.” Please sit

in your assigned seat to prevent confusion in the stands. 9. All members are asked to keep all rehearsal and performance areas clean. Please pick up trash...this is our

home. 10. All OWHS rules and regulations apply to The Band. 11. Be proud of what you are a part of...a GREAT band. 12. RESPECT!!!

Tardiness

All Students are expected to be in class on time! Students must be in the band room when the bell rings and will be given two minutes beyond the bell to be in their assigned seat with an instrument, music, and pencil. Students who are not in their seat by this time will be marked tardy and will have 5 points deducted from their attitude grade. Excessive tardiness will be forwarded to Students Services for proper discipline.

Grading

OWHS Bands Grading Scale: 97%-100% = A+ 94%-96% = A 90%-93% = A-

87%-89% = B+ 84%-86% = B 80%-83% = B-

77%-79% = C+ 74%-76% = C 70%-73% = C-

67%-69% = D+ 64%-66% = D 60%-63% = D- 00%-59% = F

Grading for the OWHS Bands is very simple. All rehearsals, performances, playing exams, written exams or any other assignments are graded out of a possible number of points. Each portion of the band grade constitutes a percentage of the final quarter grade. The breakdown of the grade can be seen below. There will also be several opportunities to earn extra credit throughout the semester and students are encouraged to take advantage. At the conclusion of each semester, every member of an OWHS Band will take a final exam. This exam will consist of concepts discussed in class. A study guide will be handed out the week before final examinations and students will have the opportunity to ask questions before taking the exam. These exams are learning experiences and will help the Director of Bands understand which areas of music need to be touched on more thoroughly in class. In addition, they will constitute 10% of the final semester grade.

The breakdown for the OWHS Band grade will be as follows:

40% Performance Attendance 25% Attitude 25% Written Work/Playing Exams 10% Weekly Playing Grade

Performances

The Oshkosh West High School Bands have many performances throughout the school year. A calendar with all of these dates and times can be found at the beginning of this handbook. Students are given the dates and times early in the year so that schedules can be cleared and calendars can be marked. If a student fails to show at a required band performance, he or she will be given a zero in the grade book. If at some point a student has a time conflict, he or she must contact the Director of Bands A.S.A.P. It is difficult to pass this course if a performance is missed. Please see the OASD Make-Up Policy below.

Make-Up Work Procedures

District procedure states that for every school day absent, one (1) school day is given for make-up work. If the absence lasts until the end of a marking period, students have ten (10) school days (Incomplete) and then a grade is given based on the amount of work turned in. The official “Music Addendum” is listed below. There is nothing that can actually make up for a “live” performance. However, administration has directed that the following be implemented to allow students to “make-up” for a missed “live” performance. In the event that a “live” performance is missed due to an unexcused absence, students may not make-up the performance. An excused absence must be made up with a research project and requires prior notification to the directors. This research project must be pre-approved by the Director of Bands in order to count towards a final class grade. The following guidelines have been set forth by the OASD:

Type of Performance Page Length Requirement Missed Pep Band 02 Pages Missed Parade/Procession 10 Pages Missed Concert 15 Pages

Music/Athletic Conflict Resolution Matrix

According to the Music Activity Code (Board Rule No. 378), music performances fall into one of two categories.

1. Major Concerts (Final Exams) 2. All Others

Category 1 Performances: Each Band, Choir, and Orchestra gives three or four category one (1) performances each year. This averages 1.33 conflicts per athletic season per student. The OWHS Music Department makes every effort to avoid setting performances on game/match days. Since these category one (1) performances are used as final exams, students are excused from all other school related activities for this performance. Further, there shall be no retribution to the student for missing another activity, including athletics.

Category 2 Performances: Conflict Priority Game/Match vs. Music Rehearsal Game/Match Music Performance vs. Athletic Practice Music Performance Athletic Practice vs. Music Rehearsal Student Choice 1st, then Alternate Music Performance vs. Game/Match Student Choice 1st, then Alternate

Private Lessons

Private lessons are not a part of our school curriculum, but we highly encourage all students to consider taking lessons in the community. Oshkosh has a number of outstanding private teachers on all instruments and a list of some instructors is listed below. By taking private lessons, students can challenge and push themselves to a higher level. Any extra instruction will be a benefit to students’ musical understanding and is especially helpful when working on solo and small ensemble literature. As always, if you have questions regarding private lessons, please do not hesitate to contact the Band Office at Oshkosh West High School.

Solo & Ensemble Participation

All students in the Oshkosh West High School Band Program are required to study a solo or small ensemble piece during the Spring semester. All students will perform a portion of this music for the teachers (not in front of the class unless desired). Participation in the WSMA Solo/Ensemble Festival is not a requirement for all students, but participation in the festival is highly encouraged. Members of the Wind Ensemble, Varsity Band, and Jazz Ensemble are all required to participate in the festival as this is a requirement of those ensembles. By preparing and studying solo and ensemble music, students increase their musical ability and in turn, increase the quality of our band program. In addition, students will earn points towards a Band Letter by participating in this festival. If students receive a rating of *1, they will advance to the state festival held at UW-Oshkosh.

Band Officers

Each year the OWHS Bands vote in band officers. Each band will elect two representatives to present their interests at band officer meetings. This group of representatives will then select from thmeselves a President to oversee the group. The purpose of this organization is to help facilitate all band activities. This group will help plan social outings, trips, and will help coordinate events with the Band Parent Organization. In addition, the band officers should inform the Director of Bands of any problems/concerns. The OWHS Band Officers will meet during a time agreed upon by all members. Communication will help make us a “great” band.

11

Challenge System

Students in the OWHS Bands have the opportunity to “challenge” fellow classmates for chair placement. Students who desire to move up in their respective section may opt to “challenge” the person sitting ahead of them. Students may only challenge one chair/person at a time. In other words, a student sitting 5th chair may challenge the person sitting 4th chair, but not anyone ahead of them until they have successfully moved up in the section. In order to challenge another person, the “Challenge Form” must be filled out and submitted on the OWHS Bands website (www.oshkoshwestbands.com – Under “Forms”). At the time a “challenge” is requested, both students will receive identical etudes to practice. They will then be given three days to prepare this piece of music. The two students will then perform this piece of music for the Director of Bands and Associate Director of Bands and it will then be decided if an adjustment of chairs will occur. Students may “challenge” fellow classmates twice/quarter, up to three weeks prior to a major performance.

Extra Help

If at any time students would like extra help, they should not hesitate to ask. Your teachers are always willing to help, especially when asked. The best time to receive additional help is before school, during lunch, or immediately after school. Asking for assistance shows good character and will further advance students in the program.

Trips Members of the Oshkosh West Bands represent the school whenever they travel outside of the school and community. All members must follow the rules of the Oshkosh Area School District and will represent our school with class. Any member who displays conduct unacceptable to the band, may be subject to dismissal from the Band Program. Use common sense and good judgment! One philosophy of the bands is to share our music with others in the community and beyond. The West Bands have a tradition of sharing this music and in the past have traveled to Hawaii, Illinois, and Florida to do so. If a trip is being planned for any or all of the bands, proper communication will be made with students, administration, and parents. Fundraising opportunities will also be given to the students as to help with their financial obligations when traveling.

Pep Band

The OWHS Pep Band participates in various performances throughout the school year. Students in the band program are divided into two pep bands of equal ability (Blue Pep Band and White Pep Band). Each pep band is responsible for certain performances throughout the year. Both pep bands perform together at four home football games. These are required performances that influence band grades. In addition, each pep band is responsible to perform at two boy’s and two girl’s basketball games. In other words, of the eight basketball pep band performances scheduled, students are responsible for four. The dates and times of these games can be found on the calendar printed in this handbook. Students are required to perform at the designated games, but are encouraged to perform at more. Points towards a Band Letter will be issued for extra pep band performances. As a general rule, if a student misses a pep band performance, he or she may make it up by attending two extra pep band performances, or by completing a 02 page research project. In the event that a team advances in tournament play, the pep band will perform and students are encouraged, but not required to participate.

Marching Band

The OWHS Marching Band is comprised of all members of the OWHS Bands. Throughout the year the bands march in the Oshkosh Holiday Parade, Appleton Holiday Parade, and the Oshkosh Memorial Day Procession. Students participating in the summer marching program will perform in the Homecoming Halftime Show for the Homecoming football game. It is expected that by the end of football season, students are comfortable with all pep/marching band music used for the school year.

Uniforms Recently, the Oshkosh West Band Department was proud to display brand new marching uniforms and concert tuxedos. The utmost care should be taken at all times with these uniforms and any damage caused to the uniform will be the student’s responsibility. Following these performances, all marching uniforms MUST be returned to West High School. Under no circumstances may marching uniforms be stored at your home. When wearing a uniform, you must wear the entire outfit. The uniform is either worn in entirety or is hanging up on a hanger. Concert tuxedos will be issued at the start of the school year and can be stored at home. The utmost care should be taken when storing these uniforms. Please keep the tux in the provided garment bag and be careful not to misplace the bowtie, cummerbund, and hanger. Instrument Care

All students enrolled in an OWHS Band must have an instrument in good working condition. The school understands that instruments can be quite expensive to repair, but it is the student’s responsibility to take care of his/her personal or school-owned instrument so that repairs are not needed. Students should make sure that instruments are stored in a case and locker when not in use. In addition, students should not keep music or other papers in cases as this may cause damage to the instrument. All music and papers should be kept in a band folder, which will be issued at the beginning of each school year. Folders are then to be stored in the designated folder cabinets at the front of the band room. If at any point an instrument needs repair, students should inform the Director of Bands so that the instrument can be sent in to a professional repair technician.

School-Owned Instruments

At the beginning of the school year, some students may need to use a school-owned instrument. School-owned instruments will be issued in good/excellent working condition. Students and parents/guardians must read and sign the OASD Instrument Policy (See “Forms”). This form must be turned in to the Band Office by the designated due date. Students are responsible for these school-owned instruments and any damage caused to the instrument by lack of proper care will be his/her responsibility (See “Forms”). As stated in the Oshkosh Area School District Instrument Policy, there is an annual $50 rental fee (one time) for the use of a school-owned wind instrument and a $25 fee for percussion use. Please remember that many other students pay more than this amount each month to rent their instruments from a local music store.

Reeds/Accessories

If a student is in need of a reed or other accessory, he or she may purchase the item at a local music store. Under no circumstances will reeds/accessories be issued during class. There will be no accessories/reeds available for sale from the band room. Students must purchase these needed items in advance of rehearsal to be prepared for class. The following lists show the class materials that are required for each instrument in our program. All of these supplies can be purchased at a local music store. This is a minimum list of what is needed and you are always welcome to purchase other accessories as needed or desired. If you need assistance with the purchase of any items, please do not hesitate to contact the directors. During the first two weeks of school, each student must demonstrate that he/she has the required materials for class.

Band Office

Absolutely no students are allowed in the Band Office unless he or she has been invited to enter. If at any point a student is in the Band Office without permission, appropriate discipline will result. Please respect that this is a personal office and work area. There will be several times when teachers are working on rehearsal plans, drill writing, arranging, or other projects that require quiet time for study. If students need to use the phone or get something from a desk, please ask first. Courtesy and respect will most of the time get students a “yes” answer while disrespect will get nothing. It is asked that if the door is closed, that students knock before entering. 99.9% of the time the door will be open.

Oshkosh West High School Band Parent Organization

Oshkosh West is proud to have an extremely active Band Parent Organization. This parent-run organization was instrumental in initiating the West High School “Band Uniform Project” and was successful in securing the necessary funds. The Oshkosh West High School Band Boosters also help with other projects and tasks throughout the school year in order to assist the West Bands. Many volunteers are needed at concerts, parades, and trips and this parental help is vital to the success of our program. Any parent/guardian who has a son/daughter in band at Oshkosh West High School, is considered a member of the Oshkosh West Band Boosters. All parents/guardians are encouraged to become active members of this organization. Official notices will be mailed out to all band parents with notification of meeting times and dates.

Fundraising

Throughout the school year there may be opportunities for students to fundraise for either an upcoming band trip, or to help support the general running of the OWHS Band Program. Recently, the OWHS Band Department, in coordination with the OWHS Band Boosters, fundraised to purchase new marching and concert band uniforms. Specific information regarding fundraisers will be issued at the start of each fundraising project. Any ideas from parents or students are always welcomed. Students are encouraged to participate, but are not required.

Sample Forms Throughout the school year, there may be a time when a particular form needs to be filled out by the student or parent. We have included a few sample forms for you to view and keep on record. These forms can be obtained from the band website only. All forms and other materials should always be submitted via the website and never in paper.
