Prerequisites:

Data Structures, Computer Organization and Microprocessors

Objective:

The objective of the course is to study and understand the concepts related to operating

systems, such as concurrency, deadlocks, memory management, processor and diskscheduling, file system organization and security.

Learning Outcomes

Outcome1:  The student will be able to understand the services provided by the

operating system, operating system structures, process concept and multithreaded

programming models.

Outcome2: The student will be able to understand the concept of process, compute

the waiting time for each process based on scheduling algorithms and draw the

Gantt charts illustrating the execution of scheduling algorithms. The student will be

able to understand the concept of deadlocks, state the mechanisms through which

deadlocks can be prevented, avoided, detected and ways to recover from a

deadlock.

Outcome3: Student will be able calculate the number of page faults for a given page

replacement algorithm. The student will be able to understand various memory

management strategies such as contiguous memory allocation, paging, and

segmentation. Student will be able to understand the concept of demand paging,

thrashing, kernel memory allocation, memory mapped files. Student will be able to

understand the concept of files, file system, directory structure, and file system

mounting, file sharing and protection.

Outcome4: Student will be able to understand various file system implementations,

directory implementations. Student will be able to compare various secondary

memory allocation techniques with respect to parameters such as amount of

memory occupied, finding space for a new file. Student will be able to compute the

distance that a disk arm moves for various disk scheduling algorithms. Students will

be able to apply the concept of various free space management techniques for a

given problem. .Student will be able to understand the basics of I/O.

Outcome5:  Student will be able to understand the concept of protection and

security. Student will be able to understand the concept of access matrix, nature of

association between process and a domain. Student will be able to list out various

authentication techniques used for security. Student will be able to understand

various computer security classification techniques.
