Catholic Home Mission

Catholic Home Mission describes a

Diocese like ours that has few

resources available to provide basic

pastoral services without outside help.

Mission dioceses oen struggle with isolaon and a lack of

available pastoral and lay leadership. Here in northern

Wisconsin, the country churches you might see in small

towns with no resident priest are home missions.

With your support we can provide catechesis, lay leader-

ship training, seminarian educaon funding, and other

essenal pastoral outreach in home mission dioceses.

Please consider supporng the Appeal this year. Thank

you.

Adoration of the Blessed

Sacrament will be observed on

Friday, May 3rd, beginning after

the 8:10 a.m. mass until 6:00 p.m.

in the Padua Center Chapel. You

are invited to participate, either by stopping

by whenever you can that day, or by signing

up for a specific time. Sign up sheets are

located at the entrances. We are required to

have at least one designated person present

for each hour. Thank you.

St. Francis Parish wishes everyone in our cluster

a Blessed Easter. Easter and the Spring Season

brings new beginnings to our lives. Leave the

things we have no control over behind us and

focus on the things we can make better for

ourselves, family and friends.

Did you know Pine Trees know then it’s Easter?

Yellowish vertical shoots, known as candles,

form first and then side buds, which will

eventually form branches, develop leading to

the new growth resembling a cross. These

develop around Easter in most of the U.S. The

crosses are more prominent on some species of

pine than others.

Father Shaji’s Weekly Message

Happy Easter!

A couple of years ago, I had the privilege to visit the Holy Land. One of the most powerful

moments was visiting the Church of Holy Sepulcher. In this Church, we can see the place where

Jesus was crucified, “Golgotha” and next to it a small church within the church which is the

Tomb of Christ. It was not just Church of Tomb, but also of was Church of Resurrection. We read

in the Bible, it was a garden. A beautiful morning, a joy filled morning a group of people, some of

them surprised, others confused, still others running to tell others “He is risen”.

There is a story of Joseph of Arimathea. He was a very wealthy Pharisee, a member of the

council, and a secret follower of Jesus. It was Joseph who went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’

body after the crucifixion. And it was Joseph who supplied the tomb for Jesus’ burial. I wonder if

someone pulled him aside and said, "Joseph that was such beautiful, costly, hand-hewn tomb.

Why on earth did you give it to someone to be buried in?" "Why not?" Joseph may have

answered. He only needed it for the weekend."

After the Last Supper, Jesus went to the garden of Gethsemane, then journeyed to Calvary. We

were living these moments the last few days. On Good Friday we make three stops and sing with

the Cross, “Behold the wood of the Cross, on which hung the salvation of the world.” And we

come up to venerate the cross that brought us salvation. We come up to give their burdens to

the One who hung on the cross for them.

At Easter Vigil, a large candle is brought into the darkened church. Its light illuminates the

church. This time we sing, “The Light of Christ,” and respond, “Thanks be to God.” The One who

hung upon the cross has brought light to a world of suffering in its own darkness. The heat of

the flame confirms our hope that the transformation of Lenten winter into Easter spring time.

Inserted in the candle are five wax nails that signify the wounds that the crucified Jesus received

in his hands, feet, and side. These nails are the symbol of great love. These symbols reminds us

that God is with us in our hurts, grief, that God’s spirit of compassion is in our midst, in our love

and concern for one another, and transforms hurt into healing.

The paschal candle will remain lit throughout the Easter season. It will then be given a place of

honor near the baptismal font. During the year it will be lit at the celebration of baptism and

funerals. By its light we welcome those who are reborn in the waters of baptism, and funerals by

its light we commend to God the souls of those who will go before us in peace to the eternal

dwelling place of our Father.

St. Agustin says Jesus departed from our sight, that we might return to our hearts and there find

Him. He is Risen!! He is alive in our hearts. Let the Paschal candle brighten our hearts and

minds. May the Risen Christ dwell in our hearts, families, community and bless us with His love,

forgiveness and healing this Easter and always. I wish you all a Happy Easter!!

Community Information

Northwoods Catholic Community Worshipping Together

Why does the date of Easter change every year, while

most other celebraons are celebrated on the same

day?

Every feast is celebrated at a certain me for a

reason. Saints feast days are commonly the day of

their death. While we don't know Jesus' exact

birthday, we celebrate the "light of the world" around

the me of winter sols ce, as dark, wintery days begin

to lengthen again. We have a historical clue, however,

to when the Easter events occurred. We know that

Jesus was crucified the day before Passover. The Jews

calculated the date for Passover based on both the

solar and lunar calendars. It corresponds to the first

full moon a+er the spring equinox. The early

Chris ans maintained this connec on in their

celebra ons of Easter on the first Sunday a+er the

paschal full moon.

We don't recalculate the full moon every year. As

astronomy developed, so too did the forecasts of

when Easter would occur in future years. The Church

has created a table of calculated dates, projec ng the

date of Easter decades in advance. The date of Easter

also determines the date of Ash Wednesday and the

season of Lent, as well as the feast days following in

the Easter season, including Pentecost. So these feasts

move, too! This tradi on may seem complicated, but

it connects our Chris an faith now to what has come

before our Jewish roots and the real, historical reality

of Christ's suffering, death, and resurrec on.
