The Iona College men’s basketball team (4-2, 0-1 MAAC) looks to snap a two-game slide tonight at the Hynes Center when it hosts Rider (4-5, 0-1 MAAC) to complete the MAAC December slate. The Gaels face Rider for the fourth time in their last nine contests versus a league opponent.

IONA VS. RIDER - SERIES HISTORYThe Gaels holds a seven-game series lead (30-23). Tonight marks the 54th meeting between the two teams. After dropping four straight in 2008 and 2009, the Gaels have won 10 of the last 12 and seven of the last eight vs. the Broncs. Iona is 15-10 at the Hynes Center including four of the last five.

SCOUTING RIDER• Rider is 4-5 overall after winning back-to-back contests at home including a decisive 80-68 win over Siena Sunday.• The Broncs own wins over the Saints, Central Connecticut, Lehigh and Penn.• Junior VCU transfer Teddy Okereafor averages a team-best 11.3 ppg and 2.8 apg and is tied for the team lead with 13 3FG.• Senior La Salle transfer Matt Lopez boasts 10.9 ppg and a team-leading 4.8 rpg, connecting on 62.7% of his field goal attempts.THE GAELS IN MAAC PLAYSince the inception of the MAAC in the 1981-82 season, Iona has compiled a 320-211 (.603) record in regular season conference play. The Gaels’ 320 wins and .603 winning percentage are the highest of any current MAAC member. English scored 31 points and freshman Schadrac Casimir added 29 in the loss. English added eight assists in just under 40 minutes of action. • Tim Cluess was named 12th head coach of the Iona College men’s basketball program on April 8, 2010 and returns for his fifth season with the Gaels.• Came to New Rochelle with an impressive 20-year coaching resume after spending four seasons as head coach at LIU Post in Brookville, NY.• One thing can be said, he is a winner. After spending 14 years as head coach at St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset, NY, he spent the five years prior to arriving at Iona in the college ranks at Suffolk Community College and LIU Post. • He amassed a 120-33 record and had unprecedented success at both schools.• When combining his high school record, Cluess has won more than 75 percent of his games coached.• Has led the Gaels to 20+ wins in each of his first four seasons in New Rochelle, the only coach in school history to accomplish the feat. The Gaels won 25 games in each of his first two years.• Iona has appeared in four straight postseason tournaments including a CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament championship game appearance in 2011, the NCAA First Round in 2012 with the MAAC’s second ever at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, the 2013 NCAA Second Round and the 2014 National Invitation Tournament.• The Gaels were crowned MAAC Tournament Champions in 2013 and MAAC Regular Season Champions in both 2012 and 2014 and set a school record with 17 conference wins in 2013-14 en route to MAAC Coach of the Year honors.• Under Cluess, Iona has consistently been among the top scoring teams in the nation. The Gaels finished 13th in 2010-11, first in both 2011-12 and 2012-13 and fourth in 2013-14.• In addition to being the 2011-12 and 2012-13 NCAA scoring champions, the Gaels were NCAA statistical champs in three-point field goals per game (10.2/g) in 2013-14, assists per game (19.3/g) in 2011-12.• Other Top 10 NCAA statistical marks include fourth in assists in 2010-11 (17.4/g), second in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.54:1) and third in field goal percentage (50.8%) in 2011-12, second in free throw percentage (78.1%) in 2012-13 and third in assists (17.5/g) and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.65:1) in 2013-14.• Scott Machado and Lamont Jones were both named Haggerty Award Winners as the New York Metropolitan Area’s Player of the Year. Both stars were also named MAAC Player of the Year.• Machado, who was also coached by Cluess during his freshman season at St. Mary’s High School, appeared in six regular season games in the NBA with the Houston

Rockets and five postseason games with the Golden State Warriors in 2012-13.• Prior to Iona, in his last season at C.W. Post, Cluess’ Pioneers earned a 23-6 overall record, earning victories in 19 of their last 21 contests. The squad earned its fourth straight berth in the East Coast Conference championship game. Cluess was named the ECC Co-Coach of the Year, his third straight honor.• In 2008-09, C.W. Post had its finest season in history,

setting a school record with 30 victories. Standing among the top 10 teams in the nation from January through March in 2009, the Pioneers were ranked as high as No. 2 that year.• The squad posted an undefeated regular season, winning all 24 games for the first time in school history. C.W. Post won its second straight ECC regular season and tournament championship titles and defeated Bentley in overtime in front of thousands on their home court to win the NCAA East Region Championship title and advance to the Elite Eight Tournament in Springfield, Mass.• For his outstanding efforts, Cluess was named the Basketball Times Division II Co-Coach of the Year as well as Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Division II Coach of the Year for the second straight season.• The 2007-08 season saw Cluess’ squad post a 26-5 overall record, including an 18-2 clip in the conference. C.W. Post claimed its first regular season and conference titles since the 2003-04 season with a 60-57 win to advance to the NCAA Northeast Regional at Bentley College. He was voted the ECC Coach of the Year by his peers, and was named the MWBA Division II Coach of the Year.• In 2006-07, his first year at the helm, Cluess guided the Pioneers to a 19-11 record and an appearance in the ECC Championship game. He improved the team’s win total by six from the season before he took over the program.• Cluess was named the eighth head men’s basketball coach in the 50-year history of the Pioneers’ program in April of 2006, after spending the 2005-06 campaign as the head men’s basketball coach at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, NY. He led a team of eight players to a 22-10 record overall, as well as a Region XV championship and a fourth-place finish in the NJCAA Division III Tournament. The trip to the national tournament was the first in the Longhorns’ history, and Cluess was tabbed the District 5 Coach of the Year.• Prior to his ascent to the college ranks, Cluess was a standout head coach at St. Mary’s High School in Manhasset, NY from 1991-05, where the Gaels went a remarkable 264-78 (.772) during his tenure.• St. Mary’s won a record eight consecutive Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA league championships from 1997-98 to 2004-05. In that final season with Cluess as their mentor, the Gaels went 25-1 and finished the season ranked in the Top 20 nationally after holding the No. 1 ranking for eight weeks of the campaign.• Cluess helped develop more than 50 players who moved on to the collegiate and professional ranks at St. Mary’s including former North Carolina standout and current San Antonio Spur Danny Green.• He won four state titles and two Federation championships at the Manhasset school. Cluess was a seven-time coach of the year in the high school ranks and earned tournament wins in national tournaments such as the Beach Ball Classic and the Las Vegas Prep Classic.• Cluess played professional basketball in Europe and Australia after a collegiate career at both St. John’s and Hofstra.• He attended St. John’s from 1978-81, before completing his coursework at Hofstra from 1982-83.• Cluess holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Hofstra and currently resides in Floral Park, N.Y. with his wife, Karen, and their two children – Kevin, 18 and T.J., 16.

English is tied No. 1 in the nation in scoring heading into Tuesday’s contests (UNC Asheville’s Andrew Rowsey, 26.0 ppg) and has posted six straight games with 20 or more points including a career-high 37 at North Texas and 31 at Monmouth. • English’s streak is the matches the second longest over the last 15 seasons at Iona. English were named to the Preseason All-MAAC First Team. Laury was picked as the MAAC’s Preseason Player of the Year.• Junior Isaiah Williams rounds out the Gaels “Big Three” as a member of the Preseason All-MAAC Third Team.• English, Laury and Williams are joined by third other returnees in sophomores Grant Ellis, Ryden Hines and Daniel Robinson. GETTING OFFENSIVE VS. DELAWARE STATE• For the second straight season, Iona increased the program’s single-game non-overtime record with 126 points vs. Delaware State. The total also was the highest overall eclipsing the 123 it scored in an overtime win over Holy Cross at home on Feb. 21, 1989.• Iona topped Niagara 118-92 on Jan. 4 of last season.• The Gaels also broke their assist record, posting 35 against the Hornets. CLUESS ECLIPSES VALVANO FOR NO. 4 IN ALL-TIME WINS• With the win over Delaware State, Tim Cluess surpassed Jim Valvano for fourth all-time with 96 wins as head coach at Iona College.• The Gaels’ win over Rider on Mar. 2 was Cluess’ 90th at Iona. He is the 12th coach in school history and the fifth to reach the milestone.• The fastest to win 90 games was Pat Kennedy, who accomplished the feat in 129 games. Jim McDermott is No. 2 in 131 games. Cluess reached the mark in 133. Valvano (135 games) and Jeff Ruland (157) are also members of the Gaels’ 90-win club.• Cluess matched Iona’s first head coach, Br. The program’s 10.2 3FG/g average is 1.9 more than 2012-13’s record and the first to record more than 10 per game.• Iona’s 10.6 turnovers per game was 1.8 less than the school record set in 2012-13. Iona has lowered its turnover rate in each of the four seasons under head coach Tim Cluess. Don’t Ever Give Up.”• Jeff Ruland ‘91 - All-American during his time at Iona and, two-time NBA All-Star with the Washington Bullets, Philadelphia 76ers and Detroit Pistons. Following his career, returned to Iona and served as head coach from 1998-2007 where he won three MAAC Championships.• Pat Kennedy - head coach from 1980-86. Went on to coach at Florida State, DePaul, Montana, and Towson following a highly successful tenure in New Rochelle. He is currently the head coach at Div. II Pace University in Pleasantville, NY, located 19 miles North of Iona.• Warren Isaac ‘65 - Iona’s only 50-point scorer, Isaac played six seasons in Europe following his tenure at Iona. What Is A Gael?The symbol of Iona College’s athletic teams is the popular Gael. A Gael

is anyone of Irish-Gaelic ancestry, consistent with the Irish tradition of Iona. The College was founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian

2014-15 SEASON • Had season-high eight points with two three pointers at Monmouth • Posted six assists, all leading to three-pointers in Iona’s 126-76 win over Delaware State. • Had three assists with no turnovers in 17 minutes off the bench at North Texas. • Appeared in a season-high 26 minutes, recording four assists and two steals. • Drained first Iona field goal attempt, a three-pointer from the corner in first half at Wofford. • Played eight minutes and grabbed two rebounds in season opening win over Cleveland State.

2014-15 SEASON • Posted Iona rookie record 40 points on 11-of-13 FG, 8-of-9 3FG and 10-11 FT shooting. • Has recorded five double-digit efforts, with three 20+ in his first seven collegiate games. • Named MAAC Rookie of the Week for his 20-point effort vs. Cleveland State. • Poured in a team-best 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc in his Iona debut, the

most points by a freshman in his first game for the Gaels since Steve Burtt scored 18 vs. Lipscomb in 2002.

PRIOR TO THIS SEASON • A jet-quick point guard with a great work-ethic and proven to score against top competition in both high

school and prep school. • Played four seasons at Trinity Catholic High School and a postgraduate year at South Kent School. • At South Kent, averaged 19 points per game and was a Second Team All-NEPSAC performer. • At Trinity Catholic, named First Team Class L All-State performer as a senior, averaging 26.2 points, had seven

games with 30 or more points, including a 50-point effort against Greenwich. • Led Trinity Catholic to the FCIAC and Class L State finals. In 2011, was a member of the team that won the state championship. • Trinity Catholic is also the alma mater of former Gael point guard Earl Johnson, who helped lead the Maroon

& Gold to the 2001 MAAC Championship and appearance in the NCAA Tournament against Ole Miss.

2014-15 SEASON • Ranks No. 1 in the NCAA in scoring; No. 1 in the MAAC in scoring and assists. • Has a six-game 20+ point scoring streak including a career-high 37 points at North Texas. • Named Lou Henson Mid-Major Player of the Week and MAAC Player of the Week on Nov. 24. • Has recorded 10+ points in all five games, 20+ points in four straight and had a career-high 37 in win at North Texas. • Lone returning All-MAAC First Team member from 2013-14, was named to preseason First Team prior to this season. PRIOR TO THIS SEASON • Perimeter scoring threat with the ability to put points on the board in bunches. • Has a good stroke from behind the three-point line and can shoot it equally well off the dribble in the mid-

range area. Also has a good feel for attacking close-outs and can get it to the rim if necessary. • One of two players to appear in and started all 33 games in 2013-14. Named First Team All-MAAC and averaged 17.2 ppg. • As a freshman, Averaged 7.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists and was named MAAC Rookie of the Week three times. • Son of A.J. 2014-15 SEASON • Had a career-high six points, all in first half at Wofford.

PRIOR TO THIS SEASON • A long, slasher/scorer that will look to crack the Gael rotation. An excellent athlete, with a solid skill set that

should fit Iona’s high octane offensive system. • Reserve wing, has made 17 appearances off the bench as a red shirt freshman. • Connected on his first collegiate field goal at Kansas Nov. 19, a three-pointer late in the game. • Red shirted the 2012-13 season. • Played for coach Nick Marinello at Hudson Catholic High School in Newark, NJ and helped lead the Hawks

to a 25-3 overall record and a perfect 13-0 mark in league play in 2011-12.

2014-15 SEASON • Fourth in the MAAC in scoring and seventh in rebounding, one of four players to be in top 10 in both. • Posted seven straight double-digit point effort to start season including 25 points at Arkansas. • Recorded back-to-back double-doubles vs. Delaware State and at Arkansas. • Led the Gaels with 23 points, draining a career-high two three-point field goals at Wofford.

PRIOR TO THIS SEASON • Possesses tremendous skill for his size. Has the ability to lead the offense as a virtual point forward and is a

strong rebounder and a great passer with an excellent basketball IQ. He also has good range on his jumper and can step out and make a three-pointer.

• Played all 33 games including last 17 off the bench for the Gaels as a junior, averaged 14.0 points and 8.3 rebounds and as named to the All-MAAC Second Team and MAAC All-Tournament Team.

• Appeared in 25 games and made 23 starts as a sophomore, averaged 13.1 ppg, 10.3 rpg and 2.0 apg. • Averaged 16.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game while shooting nearly 60% from the field in one semester

at Lamar State Port Arthur in Texas in 2011-12. • Was initially recruited by Iona out of high school and committed to Western Kentucky and UMass prior to

attending junior college at Lamar State.

2014-15 SEASON • Was 1-for-2 on field goal attempts with two points in five minutes vs. Delaware State. • Scored on his only field goal attempt in eight minutes of action at Wofford.

PRIOR TO THIS SEASON • A shade under seven-feet tall, his size in the middle will be an asset as a big, interior defensive presence. • Not a prototypical back-to-the basket post performer but has solid offensive skills and can step out and hit a jumper • Reserve post performer... Saw action in 10 games before season ending injury • Scored four points and grabbed two boards in 15 minutes in home opener vs. Wofford. • Had a season-high six rebounds vs. St. Bonaventure. • Spent his postgraduate season at IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL in 2012-13 • A Second-Team, All-VISAA selection at Atlantic Shores Christian in Chesapeake, VA; averaged 9.3 ppg, 8.4 rpg and 3.3 bpg. • Played for Chesapeake Bay legend Boo Williams in the Nike EYBL in Hampton, VA in April 2011.
