Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Fraud

Many bank cards are now ‘contactless’. This means they include an RFID chip as a data transmission feature which is scanned when paying for goods. Although this makes shopping transactions simpler and quicker it also means thieves can access your data using their own scanners when standing next to you without the cards being physically touched or removed from their owner’s pocket, purse or handbag.

Upon capturing your data, thieves are then able to programme other cards to respond in an identical fashion (‘cloning’). Many websites are dedicated to teaching people how to do this, as well as supplying the necessary equipment and software.

Protection against this form of identity fraud is simple and inexpensive. You will find an RFID blocking sleeve included with this issue of the bulletin. These sleeves provide a protective security barrier to stop the RFID chip signal. These can be purchased for as little as 20p each. Many ladies’ purses and gents’ wallets are now also available with built in RFID protection.

PLEASE NOTE It’s very important to report crimes as otherwise rural communities may not be given the required level of resourcing they deserve.
