I would like to welcome everyone to our Herd Reduction sale. I have struggled with what to call this sale, as I do not like using the word “dispersal” as it usually means “the end!” Hopefully this is not the end of breeding Shorthorns here at Horseshoe Creek but we will doing it a bit differently in the future.

For the past few years, this sale has been brewing in the back of my mind but I had initiated a plan to hold it a few years down the road. Since we have sold so many females for breeding stock in the past 3 years as well as culling very hard, our herd numbers presently about half of what they normally are. That is a very fortunate thing this year with the present drought conditions. The plan I had, was that I was going to retain more heifers to our herd over the next 3-4 years and then hold this sale. That would provide us with a younger set of females to offer. The group of bred heifers in this sale were year 1 of this plan and I am very pleased with how they have developed. This sale got moved ahead, when I found out that at some time this year, I had a heart attack which was caused when a virus I picked up attacked my heart muscle. With the uncertainty of what was ahead in regards to what this exactly meant, we decided this sale was necessary. At the same time, Chris had three eye surgeries for detached retinas within 5 weeks. The drought conditions and a very severe shortage of feed, also was yet another deciding factor in the decision.

We are retaining some older cows as well as most of the heifer calves and all the bull calves. Our Sun Country sale will go on as per usual on March 6, 2018. The embryo side of our operation has grown to where it is a very major part of our business. This will continue even though we are offering all of our best donors in this sale. Some donors we own in partnerships will be used to continue this into the future. Since 2003, we have produced 2090 Grade 1 embryos from 351 flushes. 53 donors have been flushed and 1710 embryos have sold to 12 countries around the world. We are planning to implant more embryos into cooperator herds and either purchase or partner with them on the ET calves produced. There are also some very unique embryos selling in this sale from some past and present donors. They are all exportable with the exception of one embryo lot.

A few things about the females selling:1) We have concentrated on producing cattle for the commercial sector, therefore our cows are managed in a commercial manner. We select bulls and females for our herd on their own merit and do not rule out any on just their pedigree. We have proven over and over that there are good sound genetics in absolutely every branch of this breed. This is a breed with a reasonably small gene pool and we need to have genetics available to advance our breeding programs.2) We do not milk out cows. We try to breed the best udders we can on our replacements. We only help a calf start to nurse once. If a cow needs help anytime after that, to help her calf nurse, she is scheduled to be replaced in the herd, no matter what she cost to buy! 3) We believe beef cattle should be trouble free. Under normal management practices, a female should stay in good condition on hay and grass, rebreed and have a fat calf in the fall. No exceptions!4) We show our herd at one show per year (Canadian Western Agribition) and we believe in showing breeding stock rather than just breeding show stock. We believe it is important to remain visible in the industry or you gamble with the chance of being forgotten.5) We are selling some older cows that we feel are sound and still able to produce a few more calves for the buyer. They are old for only one reason, that being, that they have continually produced some of our best calves every year. They can still be a good investment!6) We will be offering a finance plan to buyers who wish to use it, however, buyers must be approved by us a minimum of 24 hours prior to the sale. Some may not want to use it and that is perfectly fine but if it will assist you, please contact us about it. Details are also posted in the sale terms and conditions.

2017 marks the 100th year our farm has had a purebred Shorthorn herd on it. They have carried three generations of our family, through thick and thin, and are a major reason we are still on the land. This is a set of working females that we think will work for you as well. The sale will also be broadcast live at www.dvauction.com but remember if you wish to bid you must register for a bidder number prior to the sale.

We are showing you these cattle in pasture conditions in this catalog for several reasons. They are what they are, and the buyers should not have any surprises once they get them home. Feel free to contact me anytime regarding the sale offering, and hope you can be with us on sale day!

GrantThe day is slowly fading, but we

still have work to do!

Semen Lot - 20 Straws - HC Free Spirit 6Y1a

Free Spirit has been used in our herd for the past four years. His calves have been born 100% unassisted. He ranks in the top few herd sires we have ever had walk our pastures over the last century. His calves are long bodied, well muscled and moderate framed. They have excellent performance and are docile to work with. Free Spirit daughters have excellent udders and are great mothers. All his calves, with the exception of two that were injured, have been sold for breeding purposes. The Free Spirit bulls have averaged $4830 and his open heifers have averaged $4110 as yearlings. Almost all his sons have sold to commercial producers. 80% of his heifers have sold to commercial producers as well. He really outdid himself this year as we have some excellent Free Spirit sons we are pleased to offer in the Sun Country Sale on March 6th, 2018. Free Spirit combines the best of everything we liked about his sire and his dam. He is easy fleshing and usually comes in after the breeding season in better condition than when he goes out. For the past two years, he has wintered on only hay and looked great when he was turned out in the spring. We are selling full possession and 100% of the semen rights for Canada and USA. We will keep a small amount of semen for use only in our herd, and possibly in a few flushes. The buyer will also receive 300 straws of high quality semen of which 120 straws is stored at Alta Genetics, 120 straws are stored at Hawkeye Breeders Service, Adel, IA and 60 straws that are stored at Eastgen in Ontario. The 20 straws of semen selling as lot 1A will be the last semen we will ever sell and whoever buys possession will have all semen sales in Canada and USA after the sale. The Australian semen rights are owned by Sprys Shorthorns, Wagga Wagga, NSW, Australia. The European semen rights are owned by Caramba, Rowenberry and Grousehall Shorthorns in Ireland.Writing this footnote makes me feel like I am writing an obituary for a family member. From the moment he was born, I felt he was special. He certainly has never disappointed us. With only a few cows remaining here, he deserves to go someplace where he can be used. He has some age but he is still sound and he deserves to be used. In this business, good quality has no “best before” date EPDs: CED 5 BW 3.2 WW 58 YW 62 Milk 14 TM 43

136B was purchased in the 2016 Whos Your Daddy Sale where he was Saskvalley’s high selling bull. I had been watching for a commercially oriented bull that we could add for some time and the search intensified when I found our Touchdown bull dead in his pen a few weeks before their sale. I went through all the bulls a few times and kept coming back to 136B as my pick of the bulls selling that day. He checks all the boxes for soundness and commercially desirable traits. He has great feet, legs and testicles. His first calf crop was born 100% unassisted. He thrives on roughage. The pictures shown here, were taken the day before he was brought home from pasture this year in the driest growing season here in recorded history. He is thick made, yet very smooth and has lots of guts. He sires excellent calves from both sexes and they also have eye appeal. This is a bull that needs to work somewhere and he could be the cheapest investment you will make in a very long time. EPDs: CED 7 BW 3.5 WW 62 YW..72 Milk 12 TM 43

...SERVICE SIRES...HC Bluebook 22B HC Bedrock 73B

Bluebook was the top selling bull in our 2015 Sun Country sale at $32,000 to Maple Stone Farm in Ontario . We have been so impressed with our Bluebook calves here that we negotiated to get full ownership of him back. He arrived back here in late May this year, and we will be retaining him to use as our herd sire in the future.

this son of Muridale Buster 14K sold for $14,000 to Langco and Rockdell, in our 2016 Sun Country sale after we had used him on our heifers the previous year. Not only did he calve easily, but his calves were very popular in our sale last March. We retained semen for use in our herd, and we used him on almost all our heifers again this year.

This one hurts! When we started talking about holding this sale, I immediately thought I would keep a couple of our best donor cows. Then I decided that we had to sell them in order to have some true sale features. She is the highest money generating female we have ever owned. Her embryos have sold to 8 countries and we are sold out of them. She is the mother of HC Bluebook 22B who sold for $32,000 in the 2015 Sun Country Sale. Two full sisters to Bluebook also sell as lots 4 & 6 and they are outstanding females - probably better than 2X was at that age. I often think that these Sparkle females could live on air. They are the easiest fleshing females we have ever owned. In 2016, Sparkle 2X was flushed well into the summer and was bred shortly after returning home. She sells with a red, white markings polled heifer calf sired by HC Free Spirit 6Y, born August 4,2017. BW 88 lbs. We have sold embryos from 2X to 8 countries and her embryos were selected as the first North American Shorthorn embryos to be exported to Costa Rica. We are retaining one flush in 2X (minimum 6 grade 1 embryos). She will be ready to be flushed immediately after the sale. We will pay all the costs for one flush or if the buyer agrees, we will pay for two flushes and split the grade 1 embryos with the buyer. If an odd number of embryos are produced in the joint flushes, the extra embryo will go to the buyer. If the buyer is interested, she can be flushed until pasture time so that embryos can be implanted in the buyer’s herd or sold. She could still be re-bred for an early calf in 2019. Opportunities like this are few and far between! EPDs: CED 4 BW 5.0 WW 63 YW 71 Milk 12 TM 43

We sold 20B as a heifer calf in the 2014 Agribition sale where she brought $7500 to Neil Hastings, Weyburn, SK. By the time 20B had reached a year of age, I knew that she could develop into one of the best females we had ever produced so I purchased a half interest back. In 2015, she went back to Agribition where she was named Champion Shorthorn in the First Lady Classic. She has many of the same traits as her mother but comes in a smoother made package. She milks very well. We have not flushed her but If we weren’t holding this sale, we would definitely be flushing her as well as her full sister selling as Lot 6. 20B had another heifer calf in 2017 and we are retaining it here. She is a young May daughter of Sparkle 20B and HC Bedrock 73B. Bedrock sold in our 2016 sale at $14,000 to Langco and Rockdell. We retained an in herd semen interest and we are certainly glad we did! His first calves were all out of heifers and all were unassisted at birth. They were certainly not throw away calves either as some of them were sale features in our 2017 sale. Many of our bred heifers in this sale are bred to him again. We certainly were never planning to sell them! 69D is backed by excellent genetics on both sides of her pedigree. Sparkle 36B was produced from a package of embryos we sold to the Stephenson’s at Diamond Shorthorns, and when we saw that they were offering her in the All Star Classic that fall, we purchased her back. She has developed very well since then and she is going to be an excellent breeding piece. We decided to take her to Agribition last fall where she won a super strong yearling heifer class. 36B gave birth to a set of stillborn twins this year, but she really wanted to be a mother as she found a bull calf that had recently been orphaned and adopted him, with no help from me. She has done a great job on him despite only being a first calf heifer. She held her condition all summer on these desert pastures and the bull calf she is raising has continued to develop and will be one of the heaviest at weaning time. Sparkle 1X and her flushmate sister were born 4 hours apart on New Years Day and the debate has gone on with our vistors ever since that day as to which is the better female. 1X is more moderate framed and possibly a bit shorter made however she is also deeper bodied. Both are incredibly easy fleshing and have delightful temperaments. A son brought $5850 in the Sun Country sale and another son by Meat Packer will be in our sale next spring. We had the misfortune to lose a beautiful daughter of hers a few years ago. Her embryos have also been very popular and have sold to 6 countries. These two embryo lots are the last remaining embryos from Mother Superior herself, Prairie Lane Sparkle 1K. She was here until she was 18 years old and was still so fat, I could hardly get her in the chute to tag her. Buying her, was one of the smartest things I have ever done in this business. When I saw her in the Wolf Willow herd, I decided I was not leaving their farm without owning at least a part of her. It took several cups of coffee before I was able to get the deal done. I purchased her son, Wolf Willow Major Leroy 1M the same day and he was a herd sire here for many years as well as an AI sire for Semex around the world.

John Hagie from Cyclone Trace purchased a flush in Prairie Lane Sparkle 1K from us and flushed her to Alta Cedar Samurai 46T. When I attended the Cyclone Trace production sale two years later, I felt Sparkle Girl was the best bred heifer in the offering that day. My only regret, is that another full sister sold that day and I didn’t buy her as well. Some visitors have called her a model Shorthorn female. She certainly has bred well for us! We all know the legacy Waukaru Patent 8161 has left around the world. Here is an opportunity to flush his dam! Melita Rose has been another excellent investment we have made and we have flushed her extensively and have sold most of the embryos produced to breeders around the world. She was flushed for an entire year and returned home from the ET center last spring. She was AI bred a few days later and will have a Saskvalley Pioneer 126P calf early next spring. She will be returning to the ET center after that and the buyer will be able to do the first flush to a sire of their choice. We will offer semen for the flush on any bull we have in our inventory at no cost. Melita Rose 5021 will be 13 years old in Febraury 2018, but she still looks like a cow half her age. She has some qualities that are hard to find. She is extremely long bodied, with excellent muscle expression and yet is very fertile and is a heavy milking cow. She does not melt when she is raising her calf and her maternal instincts are amazing. Adding the best genetics you can afford to your breeding program is always a good investment. Here is an economical way to add value to your herd without breaking the bank! She has averaged 10 grade 1 embryos in her flushes for us. EPDs: CED 8 BW 1.5 WW 75 YW 101 Milk 16 TM 53

She is now 12 years old and she still has the udder of a 3 year old. She is apple smooth and stays in great condition year round. We have been going to flush her for a few years but decided we better do it this year to try to get some daughters from a cow that is this good. She is also a member of the Dottie tribe that has produced so many show and sale toppers throughout Canada and the US. She is presently at Davis-Rairdan Embryo Transplants Ltd, Crossfield, AB and will be available for flushing right after the

sale. We will provide any semen we have in our inventory at no cost to the buyer. She has been flushed twice so far and has averaged 12 embryos per flush. These embryos will be exportable. The buyer will be responsible for all flush costs. EPDs: CED 3 BW 4.4 WW 60 YW 59 Milk 21 TM 51

Owned by Jim and Kathy Vancha, Biggar, SK. I have often thought of this cow as being the “little engine that could” but the real important thing is that she “can” do it all. She is more moderate framed than many others selling but she has consistently produced one of the top calves every year. A son sold for $6800 in our Sun Country sale. A daughter sold privately to Rylan Knupp, Weyburn, SK last fall and she is doing great at the shows this summer. A full sister to Rylan’s heifer sells as lot 14A. This late March heifer was in our show herd at Agribition last fall. She is developing into a female just like her mother 21Y. AI bred to HC Bedrock 73B on June 1st/17.

A maternal sister to HC Bedrock 73Bm who sold for $14,000 in our 2016 sale to Langco Stock Farm, Viking, AB and Rockdell Shorthorns, Lone Rock, SK. Janet 67D is one of the younger bred heifers but do not overlook her because of her age. She is definitely in to top end of the heifers we are offering. Her dam is SBR WHR Janet 65Z, who is the outstanding donor owned by John Elliot in Scotland. We maintain her here when she is not at the ET center. 65Z has already produced some superb offspring in the UK that are definitely being noticed at the shows there. We decided that Bluebook would be a good choice to breed 65Z to for her natural calf and it certainly looks like it worked out well. I predict this heifer will be even better than her outstanding mother when she is mature. She could definitely be a front pasture brood cow. We don’t like to breed these young heifers too early so she was bred to calve at 24 months of age. AI bred July 17/17 to HC Bedrock 73BEPDs: CED 3 BW 4.7 WW 59 YW 73 Milk 16 TM 46

Again a cow with some age, but she is sound and one that can change your herd with one or two calves.Pasture exposed from May 6th to August 3rd to HC Free Spirit 6Y. This Patent daughter is backed by function and longevity. Her dam is still here and as productive as ever at 12 years of age. Take a look at Lot 55, who is a daughter of 22Y. She speaks volumes about this cow’s breeding ability. In 2017, 22Y had a most amazing bull calf by Free Spirit however we lost him shortly after birth to accidental injury. We were fortunate to get 71B from the well known herd of Munroe Lehne in the Agribition sale. She is a very easy fleshing female with a tidy well attached udder. She looks like she doesn’t milk, but believe me, her calves are fat come fall. A daughter sells as Lot 56. Her 2017 heifer calf stays here.Bred June 4th to HC Bluebook 22B. It was surprised to find this heifer snuggled up beside her mom on the straw pack on a very cold -30C day in early January. She was completely dry and little frost damage to her ears. She had already nursed her mother and was doing fine. She was the first calf born from Bluebook and has continued to develop into a thick, deep sided, moderate framed female. I think she has tremendous potential to become a good producer. She is backed by good producing cattle for generations. He was shown last year at Agribition and was also our heaviest yearling bull in our March sale at 1410 lbs at 13 months of age. A flushmate sister was a US Junior National Reserve Grand female and her Grand dam, WF Destiny’s Best was a former US National Champion female. Salute’s Choice was injured when she was a yearling heifer when she was chased into a pipe fence by a pack of dogs. Her skull was broke in a few places and we never expected she would live, however, she has recovered fully and does her job year in and year out. She is only being offered because I feel she is sound despite a couple war wounds on her head yet. She has produced a couple stellar heifer calves that have sold in the spring sale. She has another heifer calf this year that we will keep. Pasture exposed May 6th to August 3rd to Saskvalley Blue Jeans 136BEPDs: CED -5 BW 6.3 WW 65 YW 90 Milk 16 TM 48
