ABOUT HORSE HELPERS OF THE HIGH COUNTRY

Horse Helpers of the High Country is a North Carolina horse-rescue farm located west of Boone, N.C. We provide a safe haven for rescue horses and other animals as well as offering many community services such as speaking engagements, farm tours/school field trips, conflict-transformation workshops and internship opportunities. • Our mission is to “give sick, abused, and neglected horses a second chance.” We offer aid to horses, donkeys and mules. We also have helped to rescue fawns, dogs, cats, lambs, sheep and even chickens.

• We provide a forum for education on equine care and management, humane communication and provide a link to connect “horse” people.

• We are the only 501c3 equine rescue serving Watauga, Ashe and Avery Counties in western North Carolina and nearby Tennessee.

• In 2011 we were awarded “verified status” by Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries, the only globally recognized organization providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries.

• “Horse Helpers of the High Country is an important resource for western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee,” said Jeannine Alexander, Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries deputy equine director. • Horse Helpers of the High Country was established as a 501(c)3 in 2004 by Anita Gomez, Joyce Campbell and others. In February 2009, the presidency was transferred to Amy Hudnall and the rescue moved to Wisteria Farm where it now resides. Wisteria Farm is located west of Boone, N.C. in Zionville

Giving abandoned, abused, neglected and unwanted horses a second chance

ANNUAL FUNDRAISERS Chompin’ at the Bit S!"#$% Our annual new and used tack auction fundraiser is planned by service-learning students at Appalachian State University. This event is not be missed by any horse enthusiasts looking for some great items. Instead of an auction commission, 15 percent of all sales go to Horse Helpers. This event is also family oriented with a variety of activities for all to enjoy, including pony rides, face painting, food and various information booths (including Watauga and Ashe Humane Societies, and local equestrian teams).    Farm Tour S&''(" Horse Helpers of the High Country is a participating farm on the Blue Ridge Women of Agriculture’s annual Farm Tour. This tour features local, sustainable farms and helps participants discover the delicious meat, dairy, fruits, fish and veggies produced right here in the High Country. The tour is self-guided and farms are located throughout Watauga, Ashe and Caldwell counties. For more information please visit http://www.brwia.org/farm-tour.html Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show (BRCHS) S&''(" Steeped in tradition, the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show allows spectators the opportunity to be a part of the oldest continuous horse show in America. The 4-day Saddlebred show in June kicks off the summer. This is followed by two, six-day shows where riders are competing for international qualification in the hunter/jumper show arena. Visitors have an opportunity to watch some of today’s top competing horses and riders from around the world. These beautiful horses are competing at the peak of their physical ability in two arenas, ensuring plenty to see. Visitors are allowed to walk the grounds during the show, where they can watch horses being exercised; riders and horses practicing in multiple practice rings; and see horses getting washed, groomed. Wandering through the 17 barns is a unique experience. Each competing barn recreates a “home away from home” bringing plants, flowers, furniture and tents with their own barn colors. On the grounds visitors will find multiple stores from fine jewelry, needlepoint, and women’s clothes to tack and riding supplies. Three locations are provided to for eating. There is something for every horse lover to enjoy, whether it is the grace and beauty of the hunter classes or the power and speed of the show jumpers. eat.drink.bid. Fall eat.drink.bid. is one of our biggest fundraising events, which also includes dinner, live music, and a silent auction. Auction items include fine art; gift certificates from a variety of local restaurants, gift baskets and gift certificates from clothing stores; tickets for services and entertainment; horseback riding lessons and fine horseback riding equipment, and much, much more. This is a great opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping all while helping the High Country’s local horse rescue, Horse Helpers of the High Country.
