THE GLORY OF THE RESURRECTION

The Resurrection of Christ is

one of the most important

and central festivals in our

Orthodox Christian Faith.

In three of the Gospels, an

event is described in which

Jesus was challenged by the

leading Sadducees, who re-

jected the belief in the resur-

rection. Jesus responded to

their denials with a verifica-

tion of the resurrection

(Mark 12:18-27; Matthew

22:23-33; Luke 20:27-40) saying in Mark 12:27 You

are quite wrong!

In John 5:29 Christ taught that those who have done

good, (will come) to the resurrection of life, and those

who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.

Elsewhere He declared, I am the resurrection and the

life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he

live (John 11:25).

So, on the third day after His Crucifixion and death,

Jesus became the victor over death, sin, evil, and the

devil, by conquering death through His Resurrection.

The biblical words are still powerful and striking: He

is not here; for he has risen, as He said. Come, see the

place where they laid him. Then go quickly and tell

His disciples that He has risen from the dead, and be-

hold, He is going before you to Galilee; there you will

see him (Matthew 28:6-7). It was the first sermon of

the Church: He has risen from the dead!

We have noticed that increasingly the faithful have been lighting candles

and placing them in front of the Iconostasis (icon screen). We have also

noticed that more and more of the faithful are having their votive candles

brought into the Holy Altar. Because of the number of votive candles,

twice we have had wax spills on the chairs in the Altar. Furthermore, we

often find that candles have been left burning in the Altar and in front of

the Iconostasis and this is a fire hazard. The decision of the Parish Coun-

cil, along with Father Chris, is that votive candles are to remain in the

Narthex of the church where they remain in safety glass in case the plas-

tic insert catches fire and not brought into the Altar or placed in front of

the Iconostasis. We thank you for your cooperation.

Improvements to the Altar – Father Chris is looking to add two electrical

outlets to the Altar along with some additional lighting and to replace the

final counter top. The cost of the project is $2,300 and Father is looking

for donations in any amount to help complete this project. If you have any

questions please call or speak with Father Chris.

(Continued from page 1) THE GLORY OF THE RESURRECTION

Later, when Judas has to be replaced among the

Twelve Apostles, one of the conditions of his replace-

ment was that the candidate must become with us a

witness to His Resurrection (Acts 1:22). At Pentecost,

St. Peter proclaimed the Resurrection of Christ: This

Jesus, God raised up, and of that we are all witnesses

(Acts 2:32). The Apostles began their preaching by

proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead

(Acts 4:2). We have learned that the preaching on the

central importance of Christ’s Resurrection continued

in the Church: With great power the apostles gave

their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus,

and great grace was upon them all (Acts 4:33).

In St. Paul’s apostolic ministry, the Resurrection of

Christ was central. In describing his message to the

Christians in Rome, the greatest significance was his

preaching of Christ, who was the Son of God in power

according to the Spirit of holiness by His resurrection

from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 1:4).

When some of the Christians in Corinth raised doubts

about the resurrection of the dead, St. Paul responded

with a passionate argument:

Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead,

how can some of you say there is no resurrection of

the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then

Christ has not been raised; and if Christ has not

been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain

and your faith has been in vain. We are even found to

be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God

that he raised Christ—whom he did not raise if it is

true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are

not raised, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ

has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are

still in your sins. Then those also who have died in

Christ have perished. If for this life only we have

hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the

first fruits of those who have died. (1 Corinthians

15:12-20)

So it is, that St. Peter declared this core affirmation of

the Christian faith when he wrote Blessed be the God

and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great

mercy we have been born anew to a living hope

through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead

(1 Peter 1:3).

In our Orthodox Church, the Resurrection of Christ is

central, especially in worship. Every Sunday is a little

Pascha, commemorating Christ’s Resurrection. At

Pascha, we read St. John Chrysostom’s Easter Sermon

where it is proclaimed: O death, where is your sting?

O Hades where is your victory? Christ is risen, and

you are annihilated…Christ is risen, and life is liber-

ated…for Christ having risen from the dead, has be-

come the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

My beloved brothers and sister,

Christ Is Risen! Truly He is Risen!

Fr. Anthony’s Reflection JESUS IS A GOOD SWIMMER

(Continued on page 8)

Once at the end of the

school year the last meet-

ing with children was es-

pecially interesting. This

was on a day of an ice

cream social; therefore

there was no specific les-

son on the agenda, so we

started an open discus-

sion.

With about ten children

of different ages I decided

to start with questioning

them about their past church school year. The main

question was about, “What have they learned about

Christ?” Few of the children in different ways ex-

pressed the idea that Christ was crucified for us. I was

happy to hear that this fundamental Christian under-

standing is part of their cognition but I had a concern

that this understanding may just be a formula in their

minds and I followed with another question: “Why

did He need to be crucified?” Well first of all why did

He need to die in the first place?” and then, “Why on

the cross?”

We went on to discuss the difference between

Freedom and “freedom” as it was put very wisely by

one of the girls. The outcome of this was that the

Freedom that Christ grants us through His incarnation

and ministry comes with full understanding of Re-

sponsibility, responsibility that is guided by our con-

science.

In order to understand the voice of Con-

science, once again we needed to tell the story of the

fall of Adam and Eve. In this story we could distinctly

see the voice of God guiding us to remain faithful to

his commandment and the voice steering us away

from Truth and giving the false promise of becoming

like “God” or rather free from God.

We finished our discussion with a visual example that

would help all of us understand the sadness of God in

the Garden of Eden when God learns that His creation

has fallen off board into the stormy sea of darkness

where many predators are ready to swallow anything

available.

The reason we went this way is because one of

the children asked: “How did exactly Jesus save us by

becoming like one of us and then dying on the cross?

Could not He stay alive and save us? Could not he

save us from the highest heavens without coming

down?”

These are challenging questions and many of

us have probably had this curious word in our minds:

“WHY…”

Taken from the Biblical accounts, Church

hymnography draws a parallel between the “world of

passions” and “the stormy sea”, so I used the same

imagery to explain our fall.

Now imagine we are traveling on a boat in a

stormy sea. We tell our child that he or she can do an-

ything but jump off the boat. The desire of false free-

dom makes the kid jump off the boat anyway and we

know that as vast and as “free” the ocean is it is also

full of dangerous predators and at last hypothermia is

unavoidable.

My question to the kids at this point was,

“What would the first reaction of a Loving parent be

seeing a disobedient child fall overboard?”

Everyone had one answer: “A loving person

would jump after”. “Even if it meant death for the

salvation of the other?” I asked.

God is a Loving parent and, “Jesus is a good

swimmer”.

The last question that I had for the children

was: “Are we saved? Has He taken us out of that

stormy sea or not? Is there anything that we need to

do to help Him to save us?”

Some of them said yes we are saved, but most

of them were silent.

Here the imagery from the New Testament comes to

help us understand how God saves us in the sea. It is

known that unless one is a very good swimmer it is

extremely hard to save someone else who is in ex-

treme confusion and distress because of fear and luck

of trust. We also know that one can be saved in the

sea by complete submission to the will of the rescuer.

After all he is ready to die for us and the least we can

do is trust His salvific ability and Love for us. Like

peter on the stormy sea we need to cry out to Him

“Lord save me” (Matt. 14-30), and if we are lacking

faith and trust we can call with the father of the pos-

applicant if an organization or a description of an individual’s history and involvement with the church demon-

strating commitment to the Saint Vasilios Community and its missions; iii) a clear and concise statement of the

proposed use of the grantable amount;; iv) the amount requested for an “Endowment Fund Grant”; and v) a pro-

posed budget for use of the proposed grant funds in accordance with the proposed stated purposes.

Interested organizations and/or individuals of the St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church Community must submit

their grant proposals in writing to the Investment Committee, through the church office, no later than March

31, 2017 contained in a sealed envelope marked “Endowment Fund Grant Proposal”.

Endowment Fund proceeds may be used for any purpose consistent with the mission of the Church which are

not normal, budgeted for capital, operations and maintenance expenses of the church. Allowed purposes for

which grant money may be used, for example, include, without limitation:

Areas of need beyond the local church, such as community services or mission projects.

Major improvements to space and facilities/capital improvements.

Unbudgeted maintenance of buildings and grounds.

New program initiatives for children, youth or adult ministries.

Music program for special enhancements or additions.

The complete Investment Policy is available for review at the church office.

The Investment Committee will convene a meeting on April, 2017 and will unseal the proposals compared to

and in consideration with the needs of the church. The Investment Committee may, in its discretion, recom-

mend award of the grantable amount of the annual investment proceeds of the Endowment Fund to any grant

applicant(s)which may be one or more Saint Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church Community parish organizations

and/or individuals. The grant recommendation(s) will be presented to the Parish Council for acceptance and to

the 2017 Spring General Assembly for ratification.

According to the Investment Policy, following each calendar year end the Investment Committee calculates the

allowable grantable amount based on the formula prescribed in the Investment Policy which consists of net

earnings on Endowment Fund principal. According to the Investment Policy, the principal of the Saint Vasili-

os Endowment Fund must remain inviolate and irrevocable. As such, at each Spring General Assembly be-

ing the first, the Investment Committee will propose and recommend its use of the grant money according to the

needs of Saint Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church and in consideration of the grant proposals received, which rec-

ommended use(s) must be approved by a majority of the General Assembly. No annual grant giving is man-

datory.

In the event there are any questions regarding the above or anyone in need of assistance with the grant proposal

process, please contact:

9 APRILIOU KURIAKH TWN BAIWN «Ωσαννά, ευλογημένος ό ερχόμενος έν ονόματι Κυρίου»

(Continued on page 8)

sessed boy from the “Lord I do believe; help me over-

come my unbelief!" Some people call themselves

spiritual but not religious imitating Adam and Eve,

who rejected God’s company and community running

after false freedom. They trust their own strength in

the stormy sea. Those who are self-centered rather

then God centered reject the Church by thinking they

can manage their solvation on their own, they reject

Christ and His helping hand while sinking like Peter

who was trying to walk on the water like the Lord.

Peter recognized very quickly that it was impossible

without the Lord. So let us also free ourselves from

our own pride and give our hands to the Lord and par-

take of His resurrection and climb in to the boat that

is His Church, the community of His Body, the King-

dom of God on earth.

Church School News

Church School Thank you to all who donated and continue to donate to the Church School’s ongoing Blessing Bag ministry.

The students started this mission a year ago and have filled and distributed more than 300 bags. This would

not be possible without the help of the parish.

Grade ¾ students made icons by gluing icon pictures onto a piece of wood that they painted gold. These

icons were then brought to the altar and were blessed. The students also made prayer beads by stringing 33

beads and a cross onto a cord. During their lesson they talked about praying and the importance of more

prayer during Great Lent.

On March 5th, the Sunday of Orthodoxy, the children of the parish celebrated the restoration of the icons to

the church by participating in the Icon Procession during the first Divine Liturgy. Children carried icons of

Jesus, His Mother Mary, the Saints and Feast Days. The second grade students wore T-shirts portraying

their patron saint and the students of grade ¾ carried the icons they made.

Grade 2 has been studying the Sacraments of the church. In the Orthodox marriage service, after the couple

have been betrothed and have exchanged rings, they are crowned with ‘crowns of glory and honor’, signify-

ing the establishment of a new family under God. Please see the photo of 3 of our second graders ‘acting’

out the Sacrament of marriage. The bride is Samia Lalikos, the groom is Eoannis Nako and the best man is

J.J. Koulatis.

The Church School staff extends its gratitude to Fr. Anthony and Presv. Kellie for helping us establish a

monthly Fellowship. Their inspiration, their teachings,

their time and most of all their love is greatly appreciat-

ed by all of us. We pray that with Fr. Anthony’s guid-

ance we will become better teachers of the faith.

This year, St. Vasilios will host the District Level of the

Oratorical Festival on Saturday, April 29th. The Church

School will sponsor a light breakfast and a lunch for

participants and guests. Please attend and support our

St. Vasilios students who will be participating.

Reminders: No Church School classes on April 9

(Palm Sunday) and April 16 (Pascha).

Last day of Church School classes will be Sunday, May

21st. Information on the High School graduation will

be provided to students and parents.

“A Goal for Great Lent”

If in each family

there were just one

person who served

God zealously, what

harmony there would

be in the world! I of-

ten remember the sto-

ry of Sister J. She used

to come and talk to me

often while I was still

at the Tumane Monas-

tery. Once she came,

together with an organized group of pilgrims, and

complained, saying, “I can’t bear this any longer! Peo-

ple are so unkind to each other!” She went on to say

that she was going to look for another job. I advised

her against it, as there were few jobs and a high level

of unemployment. I told her to stop the war she was

fighting with her colleagues. “But I’m not fighting

with anyone!” she said. I explained that, although she

was not fighting physically, she was waging war with

her colleagues in her thoughts by being dissatisfied

with her position. She argued that it was beyond any-

one’s endurance. “Of course it is,” I told her, “but you

can’t do it yourself. You need God’s help. No one

knows whether you are praying or not while you are at

work. So, when they start offending you, do not return

their offenses either with words or with negative

thoughts. Try not to offend them even in your

thoughts; pray to God that He may send them an angel

of peace. Also ask that He not forget you. You will not

be able to do this immediately, but if you always pray

like that, you will see how things will change over

time and how the people will change as well. In fact,

you are going to change, too.” At that time I did not

know whether she was going to heed my advice.

This happened in the Tumane Monastery in 1980.

In 1981 I was sent to the Vitovnica Monastery. I was

standing underneath the quince tree when I noticed a

group of pilgrims that had arrived. She was in the

group and she came up to me to receive a blessing.

And this is what she said to me, “Oh, Father, I had no

idea that people were so good!” I asked her whether

she was referring to her colleagues at work and she

said she was. “They have changed so much, Father,

it’s unbelievable! No one offends me anymore, and I

can see the change in myself, as well.” I asked her

whether she was at peace with everyone, and she an-

swered that there was one person with whom she

could not make peace for a long time. Then, as she

read the Gospels, she came to the part where the Lord

´commands us to love our enemies. Then she said to

herself, “You are going to love this person whether

you want to or not, because this is what the Lord com-

mands us to do.” And now, you see, they are best

friends!

If there were just one such person in every compa-

ny, factory or office! That would be the way toward

peace. Only one person who is prayerfully connected

to God is needed, and we will have peace everywhere-

-in the family, at work, in the government, and every-

where. It is in the presence of such a person that we

are freed from gloomy and cumbersome thoughts.

Greek School news

Mary Emeromistis, our former principal, and longtime fixture at St. Vasilios Greek School passed away on

December 15, at the age of 94.

Her long association with our school began in the fall of 1947 when she created a sixth grade program further

expanding the school’s curriculum. In 1957, she was promoted to principal of the school, a position that she

would hold for nearly 40 years until her retirement and remained active in the school as a substitute teacher

and volunteer until her recent illness prohibited her from being active in the school. For over 60 years, Despinis, as she was affectionately called, educated over 1,000 students in Greek language

and culture, while mentoring dozens of teachers, As time passed, Mary understood that the greatest challenge

facing the school was not a lack of students, but a lack of capable teachers. Determined that the school would

continue, she took it upon herself to bring in her former students as teachers. Since her retirement, the school

has been led by two of her former students, and the majority of the current staff are products of our Greek

school. In addition, Mary worked tirelessly over the years to elevate the position of the community that she loved,

coordinating annual Greek Independence Ceremonies with the City of Peabody continuously since the Mea-

ney administration in the 1950s. Each March, she would proudly bring her students to Peabody City Hall, so

that they could exhibit their ethnic pride. Most importantly, Mary taught her students that having a proper

education is the key to success. Having no children of her own, her legacy and memory will live on through her countless students, all of

which she considered her own children. We will miss her physical presence in our school, but know that her

spirit will continue to lead us and will forever be remembered.

May her memory be eternal.

In 1877, The Fresh Air Fund, an independent not-for-profit organization, was created with one simple mission

– to allow children living in low-income New York City boroughs to get away from the hot, noisy city streets

and enjoy free summer experiences in the country.Every year, thousands of Fresh Air children visit rural, sub-

urban, and small town communities, called "Friendly Towns". Friendly Towns are made up of people like

you, who offer to open their homes for a week or two during the summer, and each Friendly Town is man-

aged by volunteer leaders. I live in Salem, Ma. and have been hosting Fresh Air Fund children for over ten

years and represent the North of Boston Friendly Town area for the Fund.

My North of Boston (Topsfield, Ma. arrival and departure) trip dates are July 11 - 21 with an additional July

bus arriving and departing from Acton, Ma. on July 6-13. August trip dates are available.
