Starry Stonewort Update By Kevin Farnum
Unfortunately, the Starry Stonewort is now growing well. Over the winter it fell
to the bottom, but with the warm-er weather and the water temper-atures increasing it has started to grow taller. When Dr. Rodgers, from Clemson University, was here it was still found on the bot-tom. Sampling a month ago in the pilot areas it was often difficult to find Starry Stonewort, however when sampling this week it was quite easy. Sampling in front of the Stone Gate area over this same timeframe it was easy to find the Starry Stonewort. I am anticipat-ing that we will start our pilots in the next three weeks. Our first step will be to bring the third party auditor out to help us select the pilot area and verify that the Starry Stonewort has grown out enough that it can be grabbed by the equipment.
MN DNR did a second chemical treatment in the Hwy 55 access area. Results are still pending but thus far don’t look favorable. Spec-ulation is that the algae were not actively growing during the time of the treatment so chemical uptake by the algae was minimal.
The MN DNR sent samples of water and Starry Stonewort to Dr. Rodgers to study for the correct chemicals to use. We needed to follow-up with additional samples. We have recently received the first set of results. The results indicate that he has tested a chemical that shows promise in the lab situation.
The buoys for the channels through the Southeast bay are now in place. Thanks to all of you that use this channel. The pulling proj-ect in this area will be completed at the same time as the other pilot areas.
The seining nets that will be used for the pilots have been manufac-tured and are now being stored at the Paynesville Township (Thanks Don and Mike and M&M Lumber for receiving the shipment for KLA. This truly has become a commu-nity project.)
The Stearns Coalition of Lake As-sociations (COLA) (KLA was one of the founding organizations) has been a great supporter of KLA and our efforts to develop methods to contain, and manage Starry Stone-wort. Stearns COLA has started a program to help find funds for KLA for the match of the funds that we have been awarded through the Initiative Foundation from the Out-door Heritage Fund. As a result of this effort we are starting to get an amazing amount of financial com-mitments for phase 2 of this proj-ect. To date we have commitments for the following:
Stearns COLA $1000Sauk River Chain of Lakes $2000Rice Lake $1000Grand Lake $1000Big Birch Lake $1000MN COLA $ 250Kandiyohi County $5000 Thanks to all of these organiza-
tions that are our partners in try-ing to protect the lakes in Minne-sota.
Senator Michelle Fishbach spear-headed an effort to get $200,000 for Lake Koronis AIS efforts in the Senate and House Representative Jeff Howe did in the House. Gover-nor Dayton signed into effect this grant. KLA feels that this actually puts the match needed to free up the necessary funds for phase 2 of the project, provided phase 1 works. If you recall phase 1 was a pilot project to mechanically pull (remove) Starry Stonewort from a small pilot area (4-6 acres) in-side a seining net, followed by div-ers gleaning the area, pulling the seine, allowing some growth of whatever might have been missed and a chemical treatment. If this is demonstrated to be successful; phase 2 will be a very large area of the lake. The whole project was estimated to be over $800,000, of which $400,000 (50%) was need-ed for a match. With these rough numbers we would have less than $200,000 to raise for release of the full grant (over $400,000) from the Outdoor Heritage Fund. Thanks Senator Fishbach and Representa-tive Howe.EVERY FRIDAY AT 7PM

Summer Intern — Will Lee By Susan Eyre
At some point this summer you may run into Will Lee. Will is the intern Koronis
Lake Association has assisted the NFCRWD with hiring.
Will attends the University of Minnesota – Crookston campus. He is a senior (graduating this next fall) working on his Water Re-sources Management Degree. He has an Associate’s Degree in Wa-tershed Science from Vermillion in Ely, MN.
Will lives in Richmond, MN on the chain which makes him very familiar with the area and its wa-ters.
Among miscellaneous jobs (such as statistical computer entry work) the watershed will have for him, Will’s duties include;
-lake monitoring once a month (there are two points on our lake to take water quality samples for phosphorus and chlorophyll A). May’s clarity results were 6 – 6 1/2 feet. June’s results are pend-
ing. Our very own KLA president, Karen Langmo, assists with this as well.
-stream monitoring (flow, ecoli, solids, water clarity)
-community involvement activi-ties (presenting information re-garding erosion)
-placement of stakes on pub-lic properties for buffer zones on drainage ditches
We are fortunate to have Will around and welcome him!
KLA Annual Meeting Minutes — July 11, 2015 By Alex Naujokas
Rolls and Coffee were served at 8:30 A.M. at the Commu-nity Park.
President Karen Langmo wel-comed members to the 44th KLA annual meeting. There were ap-proximately 75 members pres-ent. Guest speakers were Heidi Caskey (Lake Koronis resident who recently had a shoreline ero-sion project done), Tara Ostendorf (employee of the North Fork Crow River Watershed District), Pat Meagher (Paynesville Township), and Nick Brown (DNR Aquatic In-vasive Species Specialist). KLA board members present included Ken Hess, Sue Eyre, Bert Stanley, Shari Heitke, Kevin Farnum, Becky Felling, Diane Rittenhouse, Karen Langmo, Peter Jacobsen and Jim Elseth.
Secretary’s Report: A motion was made by Andy Erdmann and seconded by Bob Pederson to ap-prove the July 12, 2014 secretary’s report. The motion was passed.
Treasurer’s Report: A motion
made by Teri Gaspard and second-ed by Glen Setterholm to approve the July 12, 2014 financial report. The motion was passed.
Paynesville Township Report: Pat Meagher, member of the Paynes-ville Township Board, spoke of the township’s involvement with the KLA.
Mr. Meagher spoke about Win-ther Island. They have been cut-ting trails on the island, along with spraying the buckthorn. They re-cently installed a new outhouse on the island. He also mentioned that there is now permits available for overnight camping.
Many of the members asked questions and expressed issues that deal with the Paynesville town ship. Pat answered these ques-tions and addressed the concerns of the members.
Community Involvement: Diane reported that the fireworks that were shown over the lake on July 4, 2015 were a success. She spoke about the KLA potluck picnic that
is to take place on August 22, 2015 from 5-7 P.M. at Veteran’s Park. This goal of this event is to help those who use and enjoy the lake to get to know each other. Overall, Dianne spoke about how the KLA is involved in the community.
Membership: Karen spoke about the number of members that are involved with the KLA. She has been researching ways to recruit more members. She claimed that 30-35% of the people around the lake are members. The KLA would like to see this number increase.
The goal is 50%. There are 233 regular members and 18 business-es that are members.
Aquatic Invasive Species: What did we inspect last year?Watershed – 4101 boats, 2866

Shoreline Restoration and Stormwater Management Grant: The last two years have been spent working and organizing shore land erosion projects around the lake. There are 17 different projects that are scheduled to take place this fall. These projects are approximately being finances by 75% grants and 25% by the homeowner.
Lake Quality Improvement: Ken has been working to contact landowners on the North Fork of
the Crow River to Grove Lake. He would like to see wetland resto-ration projects to take place on these sites along the crow. This is because 93% of the phospho-rus entering Lake Koronis comes from here. These projects would slow down the water and allow the phosphorus to settle and not go down the river. There are lots of potential projects on County Road 19, which runs from Lake Henry to Belgrade.
The Lake Quality Improvement committee has been working on establishing a no wake zone near the 5 mile bridge. The proposal has been sent to a private firm in Bloomington, MN. There will be a meeting held with the firm on July 20th to discuss the project. There has been a new subcommittee that has been formed which focuses on working with farmers and
landowners in the NFCRWD. The focus is to work together in order to improve water quality.
Elections: The motion was made by Andy Erdmann and seconded by Gilbert Hahn to accept Matt Br-auchler and Jeff Erdmann to serve a 3 year term on the KLA board. The motion passed. Ken and Shari have also agreed to serve another 3 year term for the board.

MINUTES... from pg. 6Speaker Tara Ostendorf: Tara
started working for the NFCRWD in October of 2014. She used to work for the Sauk River Watershed District, and grew up on Fairy Lake in Sauk Centre, MN. Most of her work has dealt with farmers and drainage practices. She does grant writing and secures funds for these type of projects. She claimed that if anyone had any questions about potential projects on their prop-erty, that they should consult with her, the NFCRWD, or the KLA.
Speaker Heidi Caskey: Heidi Cas-key recently completed an erosion project at her home on the South side of Lake Koronis. She claimed that she worked with Joe at the Soil and Water Conservation Dis-trict for most of the project. She claimed that there was a lot of
funding available for the project. They had to obtain a conditional use permit and have the land sur-veyed in order for the project to take place.
Speaker Nick Brown: Nick Brown is a DNR AIS Specialist in Meeker County. His discussion focused mostly on native and non-native plants within the lake. He claimed that homeowners have the right to make it through the water to get to open waters of the lake, even if the weeds make that difficult. There are three types of ways to get rid of or slow the process of excess weed growth. They include a har-vester, weed roller, or chemical ap-plication. He stated that you need to apply for a permit if you use a weed roller or chemicals. The ap-plication fee is $35. The DNR says that no more than 15% of the litto-
ral area of a lake may be chemical-ly treated, which is why they keep track of permits and chemical use in the lake. It was also highlighted that there are many positive ben-efits to native plants within they lake. Nick said the KLA can apply for a permit to treat an invasive species in the lake, but it is a dif-ficult process. Timing makes the application process tough, and lo-cating the non-native plants is also trying. Overall, he believes con-sulting the DNR or the KLA with questions concerning the removal of weeds is the best idea.
The meeting was adjourned at approximately 11:30 P.M.
Signed, Executive Secretary: Alex Naujokas

Letter From The President By Karen Langmo
Summer greetings from Lake Koronis! The lake season is in full swing, it is a great
time of the year. Below are some highlights of a few upcoming events and updates of some of our current projects:
1. Annual Meeting – A friendly reminder that the KLA Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, July 23rd, at the Lake Koronis Re-gional Park Main Shelter on the south side of the lake, from 8:30-11:00am. The agenda is included in the newsletter, along with last year’s minutes and financial’s.
2. Membership – We are off to a great start with our memberships. As of the end of May we had 187 regular and 13 business member-ships. Thanks to all who have so “generously” contributed. The as-sociation has taken in some very significant dollars, particularly for AIS/Starry Stonewort manage-ment. If you have not paid your dues we encourage you to do so. Membership forms can be down-loaded from our website (www.ko-ronislakeassociation.org). Forms will also be available at our annual meeting. Current members will also be receiving their 2016 Mem-ber Sticker in the mail very shortly.
3. Buoys – There have been some questions/concerns regarding the marking of the buoys this year. Please remember that for the last many years KLA has taken on this responsibility. However, this year the Stearns County Sheriff’s de-partment has taken over the tasks as a normal part of their water responsibilities. These responsi-bilities are throughout the county, are have been done for many years
on all other county bodies of wa-ter. They have already spent many hours getting them out and mak-ing adjustments to weights/place-ment. We will forward your com-ments/concern, however feel free to contact them directly.
4. AIS/Starry Stonewort – Our AIS inspection/education program is up and running at all of the ma-jor lake accesses and going well.
Please see Kevin Farnum’s article for further details on this and Star-ry Stonewort.
Please read the articles in this is-sue to stay informed and up to date on the board’s activities. Enjoy the summer and remember “there is no place like Lake Koronis.”
