Lanes tanker fleet supports filling station refurbishment

Jet vac tankers operated by Lanes Group plc have been used to fill fuel storage tanks with

water so construction workers can begin a project to refurbish a filling station The safety measure is needed to eliminate any residual risk of fumes in the empty tanks igniting while the filling station in Welwyn Garden City Hertfordshire is being modernised and refitted

A specialist fuel management company first removed all fuel cleaned the tanks then surveyed them This gave the garage owner assurance that they were ready for Lanes to take the next step by filling them with waterFollowing the completion of a specific risk assessment and method statement three Lanes jet vac tankers operated in relay

to pump 127000 litres of water into the underground fuel tanks at the filling station

Each jet vac tanker had to empty five loads of water to complete the taskWith the filling work overseen by a William Southern supervisor the fuel tanks were first thoroughly vented then continuous gas monitoring was set up

Thanks to the water extraction licences held by Lanes Group the jet vac tanker operators could take potable water from a nearby wash out hydrant and deliver it to the fuel station forecourt

Once renovation work has been completed Lanes will vacuum the water out of the fuel storage tanks and take it to an authorised waste site for safe disposal

William Southern will then dry the tanks before they are refilled with fuel ready for the filling station to reopen

Landscaping NewsUV lining first for Smart Motorway drainage

Lanes Group is implementing the first project to extensively line highway drainage pipes as part of a Smart Motorway project

It has been commissioned by the Carillion Kier Joint Venture working for Highways England to install ultra-violet (UV) liners during the M6 Junction 16-19 Smart Motorway scheme

between Crewe and Knutsford in Cheshire

The Smart Motorway upgrade will tackle congestion and improve journey times by converting the hard shoulder to a permanent extra lane and introducing variable speed limits to keep traffic moving at a steady speed preventing tailbacks caused by sudden braking

It is the first time that roadside drainage pipes have been extensively lined instead of being replaced during a motorway upgrade project in the UKThe liners give the pipes the additional structural strength needed to meet the 50-year

asset life span specified by Highways England

In the first phase of the programme Lanes is lining pipes with diameters of up to 600mm along the northbound carriageway of the M6 between Junction 18 and 19 a distance of 13 kmFollowing detailed process planning with Carillion Kier partners Lanes has deployed two full-time UV lining teams on the project along with supporting CCTV survey and jet vac tanker teams

To speed up the lining process UV liners up to

200 metres in length are being installed

UV cure in place pipe (CIPP) lining is ideally-suited to working in highway environments

Compared with the only other viable system hot water CIPP lining it is faster needs less equipment and fewer personnel can be carried out in a more confined space and generates no toxic water waste

drastically reduce the potential problems with repetitive strain injuries because they take care of all the heavy lifting and in doing so they remove the strain on the operators which reduces risk of injury while reducing worker fatiguerdquo Previously the Shield branded fire doors which Starbank specialise on in a subcontract basis for leading manufacturers across the UK ndash which can weigh 100kg at times ndash were manually handled during the Postforming CNC and Glazing process stages Now two sets of Barbaric SSK Pillar jib cranes have been positioned at either end of both their 5 Axis CNC and the Postforming line to eliminate these risks and to also ensure that heavy value added products are moved efficiently safely and without quality being compromised Another benefit of the Barbaric B3 DL Door and Panel lifting mechanism is in its ability to rotate the products 180deg during processing which reduces greatly the risk of scratches improves production time and reduces manual handling during operation

ldquoIn full co-operation and partnership with Starbank Schelling has designed a customer specific solution which has delivered a more functional workplacerdquo commented Markus Also purchased by Starbank was a Barbaric SSY light crane system with a B3 DL door and panel lifter which allows quick and nimble movement of loads within a given production cell

This highly adaptable 75 x 5m system is located in the finishing and packing area and because the bridge crane is equipped with lateral guide rollers there is complete movement across and along the whole 375m2 area The 180deg turning facility of the lifter allows heavy sensitive components (Doors with glazing for example) to be moved with ease by just one man

Paul Atkinson Starbank production director comments ldquoDuring the research phase we evaluated other board lifting manufacturers and found that other compressed air lifter manufacturers were slightly cheaper however when we investigated the overall life cycle costs of the Barbaric system which

uses a single phase 240v 13amp supply without the need for constant compressed air the Barbaric system proved to be more cost effective as power is only consumed whilst is userdquo

An integral result from the cutting process is waste wood so Votecs GmbH was an ideal trade partner for Schelling UK Nestled between two Schelling fh6 cut-to-size saws is Starbankrsquos latest purchase a horizontal Votecs VHZ T6 shredder

Due to the compact size of the VHZ horizontal shredder it fits neatly beside wood processing machinery with the operators feeding material up to 5m long directly onto a vibrating conveyor which directly feeds the shredder which is housed in its own walk-in sound-proof room with access door Its compact size means it can be used directly alongside the saws so that it effectively automates the recycling element of the manufacturing process The saw operators are ldquoover the moonrdquo as previously they would have had to break up the long trim off cuts into smaller lengths to fit into recycling bins These bins were later transported by forklift truck to a central shredder all of which took additional production time and energy

With a 45kW motor and a 354mm diameter V-profiled rotor running at 650rpm it shreds its way through a minimum of 23 tonnes per hour of waste producing chipboard and MDF shavings of 1520mm And because the V rotors are manufactured from one piece they are particularly torsion resistant not to mention the fact that the knife holders are welded around the circumference of the profiled rotors All this adds up to a very fast and efficient shredding machine

The MONOTEC one metre long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the HEELSAFE grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding The whole unit is made of tough virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt Complying with the requirements of EN 1433 the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained

Lanes illuminates lighthouse drainage conditions

Drainage engineers at Lanes Group have beaten the tides to look deep into the sewer system of one of the UKrsquos most picturesque heritage lighthouses The team from Lanesrsquo

Newcastle depot was commissioned to clean and survey the drains and sewers underneath the 119-year-old St Maryrsquos Lighthouse in Whitley Bay Tyne and Wear

The work was part of a wider scheme to upgrade and safeguard the Grade II-listed landmark and enhance its role as an important tourist and educational centreA Lanes jet vac tanker and a mainline CCTV survey unit were deployed to carry out the work with one key condition always in mind the drainage engineers involved had to keep an eye on the tides

The Lanes drainage engineers used a push-rod CCTV drainage survey system to capture HD-quality video footage inside the pipe network revealing the systemrsquos structure and any faults North Tyneside Council which owns the site has been given pound164300 by the Heritage Lottery Fund for structural and ecological surveys of the site and to develop a conservation plan The council plans to bid for a further pound21m from the fund to enhance the site This will include changing the internal layout of the keepersrsquo cottages now a visitor centre to improve toilet facilities and to install a lift to improve disability access
