ATM SKIMMING: WHAT IS IT AND HOW TO AVOID IT

ATM card fraud continues to rise and skimming devices have become an issue nationwide. According to USA Today (April 17, 2016), ATM skimming incidents increased 546% from 2014 to 2015. At ORNL FCU, member safety and security is our number one priority. Because of that, we have put together helpful information to better protect you and your well-earned money.

What is ATM skimming? This type of activity occurs when a false device (skimmer) is installed illegally onto an ATM to steal card data of the users. The information can also be stolen with the use of a key-logging device placed under the PIN pad and/or when an unauthorized camera is placed near an ATM.

How can I help prevent exposure when using my card?1. Always be aware of your surroundings when using any card

machine.

2. When entering your debit card PIN number, shield the entry of the PIN with your hand. Pinhole cameras are often placed above the keypad area.

3. Inspect the device to take notice of anything that may appear suspicious. Report any suspicions to the financial institution or owner of the machine immediately.

4. Never use an ATM, ITM, or any other machine if there is anything that makes you uncomfortable or suspicious.

5. Avoid using card reading machines in poorly lit areas or standalone ATMs that aren’t monitored by surveillance cameras.

There are three positions on the Board of Directors to be filled in 2017, each of which is for a three year term. In order to be considered for nomination, a Qualified Member must return a signed and completed Credit Union Volunteer Application to the attention of Ashley Pegram, Executive Coordinator. Applications may be obtained by contacting Ashley at 865.425.2700 or [email protected].

The appointed Nominating Committee, chaired by Sam McKenzie, will select the nominees from the Applications and provide those names to the Secretary of the Board no later than August 19, 2016. After the Nominating Committee has made its selections, an opportunity will also be available for Qualified Members to seek nomination to the Board of Directors by petition. Information about the nomination by petition process will be provided at a later date.

If there are more than three candidates selected for the three available positions, an election will be held prior to the Annual Meeting. Information about the election will also be provided at a later date. Election results will be announced at the 69th Annual Meeting of the Members on March 9, 2017.

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS

How does ORNL FCU ensure the safety of ATMs and members?

At ORNL Federal Credit Union, we make every effort to keep your information safe and secure in all areas, including at our ATMs. We regularly monitor all our ATMs for skimming devices and/or other illegal activity and have response procedures in place specifically for skimming reports. These procedures allow us to promptly attend to all reported concerns. As always, all of our cards are monitored 24/7/365 for potential fraud and are protected by Visa’s Zero Liability policy. If at any time you believe your card has been compromised in a skimming incident or has been exposed to other fraudulent activity, please contact ORNL FCU immediately.
