FoolProof Financial Literacy Program Now Available O RNL Federal Credit Union recently
announced its sponsorship of a free
fi nancial literacy curriculum called FoolProof®
Tennessee for all high school teachers throughout
the State, with the sole
purpose of arming
students with the truth
about personal fi nance.
As part of ORNL
FCU’s commitment to fi nancial education, ORNL
FCU is making available the free, unique, and
web-based curriculum, which promises to tell kids
what they really need to know about money. It is
designed to give teachers more valuable time to
teach by doing virtually all of the administrative
work, automatically registering students, grading
tests, and allowing teachers to monitor students
from any computer connected online.
Because of its no-nonsense approach to
personal fi nancial literacy, FoolProof is the only
curriculum in the United States that is endorsed
by both the National Association of Consumer
Advocates and the Consumer Federation of
America. FoolProof is also a national sponsor of
the Jump$tart Coalition.
“Financial literacy and education is a key
focus area for ORNL FCU’s community relations
and outreach, and FoolProof is one
of several exciting initiatives that we
have planned,” said Chris Johnson,
President & CEO of ORNL FCU.
In April, ORNL FCU sent baskets
of apples to teachers at 64 high schools across
East Tennessee to promote the FoolProof
initiative. Each basket included information
about the FoolProof program and details about
how one lucky teacher could win an iMac™ for
their school.
ORNL FCU was proud to award the iMac
to Sevier County High School (SCHS) teacher
Martha Barnett. Martha has taught at SCHS for
10 years and currently teaches Marketing and
Retail Operations. She is also a Work-Based
Learning Coordinator/Supervisor at SCHS
and plans to use her new iMac to aid in the
production of advertising for the school’s
new Jumbotron.
“I registered for FoolProof because I am
always interested in trying new programs
to help me teach the
concepts to my students
in a new and fun way
that involves the use of
computers,” said Barnett.
“The classes I teach
always involve economics,
math, accounting, record
keeping, and career
management and the
modules in FoolProof will
hopefully help my students
gain knowledge in these areas. I also like the
fact that the students can access the modules
from anywhere they have computer access in
order to complete the homework.”

No Summer Vacation for Your Finances
S ummers can be relaxing with family activities, travel, and vacations.
While you may be looking forward to enjoying a slower pace this
summer, it is not a time to neglect your fi nances—especially this year.
Before you slip into your summer routine, here are some issues to consider.
Low Interest Rates on Borrowing
With rates at such low levels, you may want to consider refi nancing
your home mortgage. While rates have moved up somewhat since record
lows, you owe it to yourself to investigate whether it makes sense to
refi nance to a different type of mortgage to match your mortgage with
your needs.
We understand that the mortgage process may seem challenging, but
at ORNL Federal Credit Union, our goal is to make it exciting, simple, and
stress-free. Simply call 800.676.5328 today to have one of our Mortgage
Loan Offi cers walk you through the entire process. For current mortgage
rates, please visit our Web site at ornlfcu.com.
Rethinking Your Retirement Plans
Without an assured recovery in the value of your investments, the only
guaranteed way to have more money for retirement is to save more while
you are working. Be sure to take advantage of all the retirement plan
options offered by your employer. Then, consider contributing to an IRA
to save even more. The goal of ORNL Investment Services is to help you
reach your fi nancial goals. Call 865.425.2730 today to set up a no-cost,
no-obligation appointment with ORNL Investment Services’ representatives
Adam Millsaps and Gale Pace.
Putting Your Finances on Auto-Pilot
• Establish a regular savings program by having a set amount
transferred from your checking account into a share savings account.
Periodically move those funds into your investment portfolio.
• Have your mortgage and credit card payments made automatically
from your checking account.
• Setup a “dollar cost averaging” purchasing program for mutual funds.
• Save for a child’s college education with an automatic transfer into a
special savings account.
Making a few decisions and taking a few actions now can help you
develop a healthy relationship with your money—and enjoy the
summer even more.
