Missouri Jaycees -- The time is NOW! It’s time to crank up those recruiting efforts and meet your membership goals! The next few months are our busiest months with all the Jaycee summer projects. Your chapter needs to increase its membership to meet the staffing needs of your projects. These projects also bring high visibility and prime opportunities for recruitment. Abraham Lincoln said "Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today." We need to motivate our chapter members to seize the day and build our membership.

I had a busy May. I started out the month attending Greater Northland’s 35th Annual Junior Olympics, where they had 52 kids participate in track and field competitions. That same day I attended Jefferson City’s Pullin’ For Camp. They had a great turnout from the community and there were several State Team and Boonville members on hand to help. The next day I attended the Region 9 meeting in Fulton. The Fulton Jaycees are certainly great hosts and the Mexican buffet was very tasty. That next evening VP Paul and I visited the Weingarten Jaycees. They are looking to do some visitations, so be sure to invite them to your next event! Region 5 held their meeting that next weekend. Some bad weather forced a move in location mid-meeting, but RD Danielle made sure everything went smoothly.

The next weekend was our Spring State Meeting in Macon and we were honored to have the US Jaycees National President, Denice O’Neil, in attendance. We celebrated our 1st Trimester accomplishments, had some awesome training, watched the Senate induct their new executive team and participated in some Wacky Olympics. In case you didn’t hear…the Tug-of-War filled up the Macon Emergency Room. My left hand has two broken and dislocated fingers. VP Lorie broke and dislocated two fingers in her right hand. Chief of Staff Kristi had a possible torn muscle in her hand. All are recovering nicely. Thank you for everyone’s calls, e-mails of concern and support!

This past weekend I attended the US Jaycees Governmental Affairs Leadership Seminar (GALS) in Washington DC. At the luncheon on Sunday, we had two people announce their candidacy for 2009 US Jaycees Tonya Benton

2008 State President

National President. Our two candidates are Cindy Sabourin of Wisconsin, and John Weber of North Dakota. This is the second year in a row we will have a contested race for National President. This means our vote will be all that more important at the National Meeting in San Diego in September. We can only submit votes for the number of people in attendance, so I encourage you to consider attending that National Meeting. Registration will be online soon at www.usjaycees.org.

We had a really good chance of getting to growth in May, but we ended the month at (-21). I’m asking you to put forth that extra effort and find some new members in the next few weeks. National President Denice gave a challenge at May meeting that I would like us to meet. If we are at YTD growth by the end of August, our Executive Director, Joe Jerkins, must wear his new friend, Jeremiah (see picture), to two days of the National Meeting. Don’t put off your recruiting efforts until tomorrow! Let’s Work Together TODAY and push Missouri to GROWTH!

President Tonya Tonya Benton 87th President

RD/DD Incentive: Have you seen the state team jackets? You can have one just like it! Any DD completing an extension by the end of August will be presented with a state team jacket with their name embroidered on it at the September meeting in Kansas City. Any RD completing two (2) extensions by the end of August will be presented with a state team jacket with their name on it at the September meeting in Kansas City.

Presidential POC Incentives

25 pts. to each chapter that is at growth of +5 or more in June.

50 pts. to each chapter that completes a new chapter extension in the 2nd Trimester.

25 pts. per $100 donated for the IMPACT in the 2nd Trimester (make checks payable to Missouri Jaycees and put IMPACT in the memo line – mail to State Service Center).

COB Jennifer Boggs

Greetings Missouri Jaycees! I hope everyone who attended the May meeting had a great time! Thank you Macon Jaycees for hosting another great meeting! National President Denice O’Neil was in attendance with her always excellent advice and knowledge. And as always, the

training was outstanding. If you have not attended a state meeting in the last 2 years, I encourage you to attend the next meeting in Kansas City and experience a new wave of training.

The 2nd annual Wacky Olympics was held in Macon. I’m proud to say that the team from Macon smoked everyone, including those crafty Senators. Unfortunately for the state team, we incurred some broken fingers and hand bones. OUCH! Joe Jerkins tried to rally the remaining team mates but alas, we lost in the final round of the toilet lid horseshoe game. Thanks for stepping in Joe!

Congratulations to all of the outstanding chapters in the first trimester. What a way to start off 2008! As summer approaches, projects are happening all over the state. If your chapter is looking for a new project, consider traveling to another chapter. There are mud runs, mud volleyball, fairs, soapbox derbies, scavenger hunts, float trips, amusement park trips, teriyaki basting at the Japanese Festival, testicles frying and beer gardens galore out there. Why don’t you gather a group and head out to help a fellow chapter?

Remember to dream big and think outside the box, Missouri Jaycees! Don’t let low member participation keep your chapter from creating a huge project that will make your chapter a positive force in your community. There are a lot of us committed to coming and helping you achieve anything you want … we are just a phone call away. The time for action is now, so get out there and become the chapter you want to be!

See you in my travels,

Jennifer Boggs Chairman of the Board

Vice President Sandy Backes

WOW, was that a great time at state meeting or what? Kudos to the Macon Jaycees!!! If you were not there, I am sure by now you have heard. Wishes for speedy recoveries go out to all my injured state team members. If nothing else was learned at state meeting . . . don’t wrap the rope around your hands in a tug of war game!

Back to business . . . IMPACT was sent out to each chapter president and to all the state team. If you have not received a copy, let me know. I have some copies to use in your new member packets, plus it is available online at www.mojc.org. Please understand that the IMPACT is still under construction, so if you have any wonderful suggestions, please email them to me.

Parade of Chapter (POC) … packets were a low turnout in the first trimester, but by no means does that mean your chapter is out of the “game”. You still have 2 more trimesters to shine

and rise above the rest. If you have any questions, or need any help with your forms, please contact Ann Kampeter or myself. I would love to see chapters who have not turned them in before to turn them in now. There RD’s and DD’s I ask of you to help your chapters who did not turn them in to do so. I think this is sounding like a challenge. Are there any RD’s and DD’s up to it? Let me know!

Calendar . . . if you have not been looking at it before, please check it out now! If you are looking to take a vacation and want something to do that does not require a lot of travel . . . check out your fellow Jaycee chapter events. With gas prices as they are, the news people say that everyone is staying close to home. So go out and meet your fellow Jaycee members and help them with their events. You might be surprised to see them come back to help you and your chapter out as well.

Program booklets . . . if you were not at the state meeting you did not get to see the program book. It turned out quite well. We did sell some advertising, so we did make a profit. My goal is to sell at least 3 times the ads for fall state meeting’s program. To accomplish this . . . I need EVERYONE’s help. Business card ads are only $15.00. With the profit monies, a suggestion was given to me to use it towards bringing in a professional motivational speaker. Now, wouldn’t that be something great to have at our state meetings. Plus, I put out a challenge. The challenge was that if you went out and sold 6 ads, which is basically $90 worth, you can choose a state team member to help you Sunday morning at the fall state meeting carry out your luggage. (Now please note that Tonya, Lorie and Kristie may still be on the injured list . . . but that still leaves James, Jennifer, Joe, Paul and I and of course we can add the RD’s, DD’s and Program managers to the list) So go out and . . . SELL those ad sponsorships, SELL! SELL! SELL!

Be safe and see you out there and Let’s Work Together to make Missouri #1 in 2008!

Sandy Backes State Vice President 2008

Vice President James Danley

Well, we are approaching the halfway point for the year and as usual the summer will just fly by. We had an awesome time in Macon at the Spring State Meeting. I want to personally thank Macon for hosting another excellent meeting. I know that we had some excellent training in Macon and hopefully many of you took advantage of those opportunities. We also had several chapters that were celebrating accomplishments for the first trimester. How well did your chapter do?

I am excited to see how much each chapter can accomplish in the second trimester. We have so many different projects and that means we have many opportunities to impact people in our communities. What is that impact going to be? Perhaps the impact will meet a need in a persons’

life or in the community or even one in your own chapter. Now is the time to assess your 2008 chapter objectives. The only limits that are placed on what we try to accomplish are done so by ourselves. If you have an occasional roadblock that seems impossible to get around, call on your fellow Jaycees to help you get through it. There is an English Proverb that says “A stumble may prevent a fall”.

One thing that I have learned in this organization is that we as Jaycees are unstoppable. In our 90 year history we have accomplished so much. We have done so because we continue to challenge ourselves to reach higher and accomplish more. We are the change that we want to see in the world that we live in. I depend on each of you to help make a difference as you depend on me to do the same. Maybe some tasks seem difficult when we stand alone but I assure you that Jaycees stick together and are never alone. I can hear Tonya’s theme song playing in my head right now…”Let’s Work Together”.

All the ingredients for success are right in front of us. All we have to do is reach out and grab them. I know that time and time again I offer help to each of you. I offer help with training, putting CPG books together, recruiting, and putting POC packets together, and so on. Remember that just like individual chapters, we as a state team have objectives for 2008 too. Our main objectives involve making your individual chapters stronger and thus making the state stronger. Never hesitate letting us know how we can help you.

Fellow Jaycees, I am pleased to announce that the JCI Presenter that we did before the state meeting turned out very well. We are on our pace to continue filling our state with JCI Trainers. We had three Jaycees from other states come to participate with us; two from Nebraska and one from Iowa. I always enjoy a chance to meet and interact with Jaycees from other states.

The Region 5 Training series started this last month and we had 17 people in attendance at the first training. I want to once again thank Danielle, Chris, and Brandon for coming up with this great training experience for all.

This last weekend I was given the chance to participate in this years GALS convention. I will say that it was a great experience and look forward to sharing some of the trainings that I

participated in while there. It was also another chance to spend time with some of our leaders from around the country.

The summer months are here and that means a full Jaycee schedule. I look forward to seeing you on the road. If you are looking for any special training for your board or chapter, send me and email and we can work on getting you a trainer there to fulfill your needs.

Hello Missouri Jaycees! I may be a lefty for now but I’m still here!! Despite all the commotion in Macon I want to remind everyone of the great Access Day fundraisers that were held. I know this project is near and dear to the hearts of many of us, and I want to thank you all for continued support. I would also like to thank my fellow State Team for putting themselves up to be auctioned. Please don’t forget to mark your calendars and ask off from work on August 15th to attend and help with Access Day! If you haven’t had the opportunity to participate in this project I would highly encourage you to do so this year. Don’t forget to send in your donations now for POC points for the second trimester so they can be put to good use as plans take shape.

If any of you have ran projects for disaster relief with all the recent storms, please go to the National Web site at www.usjaycees.org and complete the paperwork for Citizen Corps Projects. We run some great projects of this nature around the state and should get the proper recognition for them.

If your chapters have any free time or manpower over the next several weeks, the Tree House is being constructed at Wonderland Camp, and they could use your help. You need not be a skilled laborer, only willing to listen to and follow instructions to work safely. As always if you aren’t inclined to pick up a hammer and a saw, please help with fundraising and promotion of this amazing project. Don’t forget the Camp For Kids Program is going on right now and needs your donations sooner rather than later.

I look forward to seeing you all soon, and I’ll try to help as much as I can!

Access Day at the Fair Hello Missouri Jaycees! It was wonderful to see everyone in Macon at the May State

Meeting. It was also inspiring to see how the Jaycees pull together for an event like Access Day. Fundraising for Access Day was way below last year during the first trimester, but it was awesome to see everyone come together to raise a significant amount of money in a very short time. The auction of the executive team is a great idea for a fundraiser and one that I hope can continue as a traditional fundraiser for Access Day. Remember, donations to Access Day are counted for POC points, so be sure to send your chapter's donation to Joe Jerkins at the state office before POC deadline for an easy way to earn POC points. If you have questions about the minimal donation amounts for POC points, please contact Joe Jerkins or Ann Kampeter, POC Program Manager for details.

Invitations for Access Day will be mailed shortly, so if you know of a group home or individual with disabilities that you would like to see included in Access Day, please email their name and address to Joe Jerkins or me. Access Day is also a great way to introduce your new (and not so new) members to other Jaycees from around the state. Information on times and locations for Access Day will be emailed shortly before the event and will be published in the Monday Morning Memo.

As always, if you have any questions or have projects your chapter is doing for Access Day, please let me know. Access Day...It's the Jaycee Way!

Book Judging will then take place on Sunday, September 7, 2008 starting at 12 noon at the State Service Center in Jefferson City. Any chapter that submits one, two or three CPG books for judging must also send at least one judge. An additional judge is required for every three (3) books submitted (i.e. 1-3 books = 1 judge; 4-6 books = 2 judges; 7-9 books = 3 judges; etc.).

Senate judges will also be there to train the chapter members how to judge the books. This will be a great learning opportunity for every member to see how CPG Books should look to win the recognition your projects deserve.

There is no fee for submitting CPG Books for statewide judging. Winners will be announced at the Fall State Convention, September 12-14, 2008 in North Kansas City.

There are many resources available on the MO Jaycees and US Jaycees web sites to assist you with putting together these CPG books. Contact Joe Jerkins if you have any questions.

Open Check Policy for Monthly Membership Dues Hopefully, your chapter is participating in the open check program for membership closeouts! If not, please contact Joe Jerkins at (573) 634-2321 for more details. It is really helpful when it comes to membership closeout when we must have a payment in hand before we can turn in your membership to the national organization.
