HUTTON PACES FOOTHILL COLLEGE

TO TOP NCAA

JC ALL AMERICA RANKINGS

Ralph Hutton and his Foothill College teammates domin- ate the Junior College 1957 All American Team, announ- ces John Stonebreaker, Mr. San Antonio College, who com- piled the NCAA Junior College list.

The Foothill team, which led last year with29 selections, improved its lead to 37 nominees, including eight mentions for Hutton. Second place this year went to Los Angeles Valley College, 15, followed by Long Beach, third, 13.

Thirty-one schools azi~ represented on this year ' s All America team.

Hutton scored four f i rs t places: 500 yd. freestyle, 4:42.1 and 200 yd. backstroke, 1:59.5, both for new Junior College records; I00 yd. backstroke, 56.3, with John Lutz (Chabot), second, and John Mattos (Fullerton), third, both with 55.9; and 400 yd. individual medley, 4:16.5. Hutton also ranked third in the 200 yd. freestyle, 1:46.4; second in the 1650 freestyle, 16:52.2; sixth in the 200 yd. butterfly, 2:02.6; and fourth in the 200 yd. individual medley, 2:03.7.

Pat Yelovich (Harbor) led in three events: 100 yd. butter- fly, 51.7, with Ingvar Ericksson (Foothill), second, 52.0; 200 yd. butterfly, 1:56.4, again with Ericksson, second, 1:56.5; and 200 yd. individual medley, 1:59.9. For Yelovich, his first place ranking in the 200 yd. butterfly was a repeat from the 1966 rankings.

Double firsts went to George Watson (Foothill) and Don McKenzie (LA Valley). Watson set two new Junior College records with his 1:44.7 to retain his f irst place 1966 pick in the 200 yd. freestyle, and 15:44.1 in the 1650 yd. free- style. McKenzie set a new JC recordin the 100 yd. breas t - stroke, 59.7, and also was first in the 200 yd. breaststroke, 2:14.8.

Ken Hammer (Cerritos) and Dennis Putman (Long Beach) led in the 50 yd. freestyle, both having 21.7 (new JC record) with Bob Kammeyer (Foothill), third, 21.8. In the 100 yd. freestyle, Putman set a new JC record, 46.7, followed by Hammer, 47.2.

Putman received five mentions and Hammer had four. Others with multiple rankings were F.riksson, five; Ronald Bruce (Santa Ana), six; and David Kerr (Sequoias), five.

The Foothill roams were f irst in all three relay events, with the team ¢~f D. Oliver, F. Augenstein, D. Lee and R. Hutton setting a new record in the 800 yd. freestyle relay 7:20.1. The 400 yd. freestyle team (Eriksson, Hutton, Watson, Kammeyer) was f i r s t , 3:15.8 as was the school's 400 yd. medley relay team (Hutton, White, Eriksson, Kam- meyer), 3:38.9.

Top divers on the All American team, who were named for both springboard events were: Greg Bryan (El Camino), Gordon Creed (Foothill), Gary DaMe (Foothill), Doug Denton (Riverside), Dennis Golden (Citrus), Frank Groff (Foothill), Dennis Hope (Diablo), Rusty McCarthy (LA Valley), Charles Riggs (Riverside) and Rich Simmons (Chabot).

BIRMINGHAM WINS EIGHTH STRAIGHT L.A. CITY CROWN

7 RECORDS SET, FOOTE SETS FLY MARK Beverly Hills, Calif. - Nick Rodionoff's Birmingham

Braves captured their eighth straight Los Angeles C i ty"A" swimming crown as they almost doubled their point margin over runnerup Palisades, scoring 92 to Pali 's 47. San Pedro with 31 and Grant, 30 were simply outgunned and too thin to offer much of a challenge to the perennial champs. The Braves also won the "B" championship with 88-I/2 points to Grant 's 67-I /2 and Palisades 32. But Grant stopped the victory parade as they won the "C" division, 69-I /2 to runnerup Palisades 35. San Pedro 26 and Granada Hills, 23-I/2 and Chatsworth 20 rounded out the top five.

New Los Angeles City High School records were set in the 200 yard medley relay, 200 yard freestyle, 200 yard in- dividual medley i00 yard butterfly, 400 yard freestyle, I00 yard breaststroke and 400 yard freestyle relay.

The Birmingham quartet of Rodney Skinner, Mike Griffin, John Balant and Jeff McConnel returned 1:42.0 for the 200 yard medley relay as Monroe was adistant second in 1:44.9.

Terry Foote, Palisades, the meet 's only double winner, set a new City mark in the I00 yard butterfly as he upset the defending champion Glen Hughes. Foote clocked 53.2, Hughes 53.8 and Mark Doyle, Grant, a distant third, 55.4. Foote, a junior, had ear l ier won the 50 yard freestyle, in 22.6, barely touching out Hughes who was timed in 22.7.

Tim Norlan, a Birmingham sophomore, set a record to win the 200 yard freestyle, 1:48.9, as San Pedro's defend- ing champion, Charles Dragicevich, faded in the last two strokes, clocking 1:49.3. Dick Zimmer, Palisades, 1:51.3 was third.

Mike Thomas, Verduge Hills senior, successfullydefended his 200 yard individual medley crown as he lowered his own record to win in the time of 2:04.9. Thomas trailed Wayne Pugh, Birmingham until the end of the breaststroke leg. On this leg, the victor wiped out the 10feet lead enjoyed by Pugh and went on to easi lywinhis secondCity medley crown in as many years. Pugh clocked 2:05.8.

In the breaststroke, Thomas went down to defeat though he lowered his City mark by achieving 1:03.2. But this even- ing, Greg Mader, Chatsworth, went even faster, 1:03.0 for his record and an upset of the 1966 champion.

Wayne Pugh successfully retained his 400 yard freestyle title as the 1966 kingpin trailed the two early leaders, Nor- fen and Dragicevich for 300 yards, and then made up the three yard deficit with a blistering sprint to win by a body length over Norlen, 3:56.9 to 3:58.2. Dragicevichwas timed ir~ 3:59.5 for third.

The last record came in the 400 yard freestyle relay as the Birmingham relay team of McConnel, Lindner, Norlen and Pugh came from behind to nipGrant3:21.7 to 3:22.2.

John Balent, Birmingham, almost pulled off a surprising double. He placed second in the springboard diving, 213.95 to the winner, Mike Thomas, Canoga Park, 226.35. Defend- ing champion, Sonny Gossick, Reseda, was third 213.45. Balent scored his upset in winning the I00 yard backstroke three events later. He clocked 58.4, with teammate Rocky Skinner, 59.0 second and Taft 's Dick Marting, third 1:01.3.

A Palisades sophomore, Dick Zimmer won the I00 yard freestyle in 50.0 with Birmingham's Jeff McConnel 50.4 and Gary Johns, Grant 50.8 trailing in that order.

S P I T Z - S A N T A Detroit, Mich.- Mark Spitz and the Santa Clara High School

team, coached by George Haines, for the second straight year so dominated the high school All America listings (20 mentions) that only in the breaststroke did a Santa Clara swimmer fail to hold the f irst place ranking. The Cali- fornia team compiled the most outstanding record ever achieved.

Spitz, now a junior, led the 1967 National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association High School All America listing in four individual (sc) events: the 200 yd. freestyle (1:43.6); 400 yd. freestyle (3:38.9); 100 yd. butterfly (49.1); and the 200 yd. individual medley (1:54.4)s all are National High School records with the butterfly and medley times also establishing American records. He was fourth in the 100 yd. freestyle with a time of 48.0.

The Santa Clara relay teams again took first all Amer- ican rankings in both relays and lowered their records set last year. Mitch Ivey, Jack Faunce, Spitz and Bob Jamison reduced the 200 yd. medley relay time to 1:36.7; and Jami- son, Rick Eagleston, Fred Haywood and Spitz set the 400 freestyle relay mark at 3:06.8.

Jamison made an outstanding showing with two firsts of his three individual mentions: a new high school record in the 100 yd. freestyle (46.6); f i rs t in the 50 yd. freestyle (21.6); and was listed 13th in the 200 yd. freestyle (1:47.6).

Tied for second in the 50 yd. freestyle were Louis Janos, Miami Springs High School, Fla. (who led the nation in 1966 with 21.4 but this year could do no better than 21.70; Lee Bradford, Avondale High School, Ga.; and Dirk Van Hoesen, Deerfield High School, Ill.

Eagleston of Santa Clara followed Jamison in the 100 yd. freestyle with a 47.4.

Fred Haywood, another Santa Claran, set a new national high school record for the 100 yd. backstroke (53.1), fol- lowed by teammate Mitch Ivey (53.2).

Another national high school mark was credited to Brian Job, Kent State High School, Ohio. He erased Jack Faunce's (Santa Clara) 1965 record of 1:00.7 for the 100 breaststroke with a 1:00.6. Van Hoesen was second, 1:01.1.

In diving, Mike Chaibeck, Madera High School, Calif.; John Huffstutter, Newark, Ohio; Dick Rydze, Mt. Lebanon, Pa.; Gary Gibboney, John Adams, Ind.; Doug Malin, Hinsdale, Ill.; and Ted Nichols, Palo Alto, Calif., were among the 24 honorees.

Other noteworthy achievements were by John Fer r i s , Rio Americano High, Calif., named in four individual events, and Alan West, Memorial High, Tex., with three individuals.

Fer r i s was third in the 200 yd. individualmedley (1:59.9); third in the 100 yd. butterfly(52.2); listed 14th in the 200 yd. freestyle (1:47.6) and 15th in the 400 yd. freestyle (3:52.8).

West had three individual mentions: 5th in the 100 yd. freestyle (48.0); 8th in the 200 yd. freestyle (1:46.5); and 15th in the 50 yd. freestyle (22.1). His school's team (West, Helmans Suchecki, McMillion) was second in the 400 yd. freestyle relay (3:16.7).

Again this year California led the nation in individual

MARK SPITZ BOB JAMISON

C L A R A H I 6 H - N A T I O N ' S B E S T swimming events, with 65 rankings out of a possible 187 listings. Southern California claimed 51 individual listings, while the northern swimmers gained 15. In the relay All America listings, Southern California had 8 mentions and Northern California, four, for a state total of 12 out of a possible 41.

California's strength is due greatly to its strong free- style swimmers, who were able to amass seven of the top 10 positions in the 200 yd. freestyle listings and nine of the f irst eleven 400 yd. freestyle positions.

Californians placing high in the 200 yd. listings were: Spitz; Andrew Strenk, Fullerton High; Mike Allen, Palo Alto High; Fred Haywood; Mike Martin, Corona del Mar High; Steve Genter, Lakewood High; and Dave O'Malley, Los Altos High.

Those claiming the nine high 400 yd. freestyle positions were: 'Spitz; Genter; Trevor Charlton, Arcadia High; Strenk; Allen; Martin; Steve Frlekin, Lasuen High; Tod Spieker, Menlo Atherton High; and Mark Shelley, McClatchey High.

The only threats to the California swimmers in these top place rankings were provided by Tom Ludwig, BaldwinHigh, Pa., with his fast second place times inboth the 200 and 400 yd. freestyle events, 1:45.4 and 3:45.0, respectively; Alan West, Memorial High, Tex., and Jer ry Heindenreich, Hill- crest High, Tex., in the 200 yd. event; and Jody Helman, Memorial High, in the 400 yd. event.

Illinois swimmers continued to win a strong position on the national picture with 23 individual mentions and 15 relay rankings.

Third highest in state rankings was Texas with 22 indi- vidual and two relay mentions.

Twenty-five other states placed men in the All America rankings. Ohio with eight individual swimming postings and six relays placed fourth in overall standings, followed by Florida, 10 individual and one relay; Pennsylvania, nine individual, one relay; Michigan, six individual, two relay; Kansas, six individual; New York, three individual, one relay; Utah, New Jersey, Minnesota, Indiana and Colorado, each with three individual; Georgia, Iowa,Nebraska, Oregon and Virginia, each with two individual; Oklahoma, one indi- vidual and one relay; and Wisconsin, NewMexicos Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri and Rhode Island, each with one individual.

SWIMMING WORLD'S exclusive column, ' 'Where Are They Now", giving the college of each all America, will appear in the October issue.
