We call this, in Latin, the Una Sancta. It is confessed in the Creed: “I believe in one, holy, Christian and apostolic church.” We are united to believers all over the globe. Those in Sri Lanka are our brothers and sisters. Those faithful believers were martyred on Easter because of their faith in the risen Lord. We stand with them. We kneel with them. We sing to the same Crucified King and we receive the same body and blood. The seal of the grave is broken by the One who is the resurrection and the Life. Death cannot hold Him; death cannot hold us. St. Paul puts suffering in this world in context to what Easter promises: “I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18). In other words, as difficult as this life can be, the beauty and wonder and joy of the next life so far outweighs anything that we experience here that it is not even worth comparing. On one side of the balance (heaven’s side) sits a grinning Shaquille O’Neal. On the other side of the balance (earth’s side, full of difficulty) sits an ant. Which one weighs more? The Queen of Seasons emboldens us for life in this world. We are the undefeated. Christians cannot have what Christ gives taken away from them. We live in the confidence of the empty tomb. We live in the confidence that with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). We live in the confidence that when I am weak then I am strong (2 Corinthians 12:10). At the end of the Queen of Seasons, Christ the King Lutheran Church will confirm three young people into the communicant membership of the body of Christ. Giovanni Barlows, Layla David, and Thomas Bosman will confess their faith and take their mature place in the Una Sancta on Pentecost – 50 days after Easter. The coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost will be beautifully reflected as these three believers will give voice to the faith which God Himself has breathed into them by the power of Holy Spirit. “There is one body and one Spirit – just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call – one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all” (Ephesians 4:4-5). The Queen of Seasons is joy and hope and freedom and wonder and life all rolled into one beautiful divine reality. We participate in Christ’s resurrection and Easter is at work in us, in our congregation and at work throughout this world. Now the queen of seasons, bright With the day of splendor, With the royal feast of feasts Comes its joy to render; Comes to gladden faithful hearts Which with true affection Welcome in unwearied strain Jesus’ resurrection! MESSAGE FROM PASTOR SMITH MAY 2019

CORNERSTONE

The Queen of Seasons Eastertide is the most festive time of the church year. Our Risen Lord appeared to His disciples over a period of forty days. These are Gospel-laden encounters, rich in love, tenderness and theological depth. All of Jesus’ promises are realized in the hearts and minds of those who saw, heard, and touched the Easter King. St. John, in his first epistle, writes these magnificent words:

“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ” (1 John 1:1-3).

During Eastertide the church is reminded of the continuation of Christ’s ministry. Nothing has changed in the life of the church since St. John penned these Scriptural words. The Lord abides among us and we have fellowship with Him. Fellowship is a synonym for communion. Our interaction with the Messianic King begins at the altar where we receive His atoning sacrifice through His body and blood. We share in the life of God’s Son as He comes to us with forgiveness, life, and salvation. Not only that, but we are united to one another. There is only one church. St. Paul puts suffering in this world in context to what Easter promises: “I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is

to be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18). Now the queen of seasons, bright With the day of splendor,

With the royal feast of feasts Comes its joy to render;

Welcome in unwearied strain Jesus’ resurrection!
