ORMTC President’s Report November 2015

Last weekend marked our 40th Anniversary Celebration at the Kalamunda Hotel. Though numbers were down on expectations, those who attended enjoyed a beautiful afternoon of conviviality in our own private well decorated upstairs lounge bar. Food and drinks were in plentiful supply and the music and slide shows were excellent. Some very much former members turned up, and some even said they’d like to join again. The event doubled as our Annual Awards presentations. Trophy winners for 2014/15 were

Spinning Compass – Roving Russell Close Call – Roo Boy Mal Turkey of the Year – Stack it Steve Best Ride – Navigator Nic and Ebullient EJ Media Award Best Article(s) – Peter Pensmith Media Award Best Photograph – EJ Club Member of the Year – EJ

Heartiest congratulations to the very worthy winners.

Editors Report

Hi all, Once again I was short of time putting this issue together. Partly because I wasn’t able to take today off work and partly because I had a surprise visitor for the weekend: my cousin from Victoria. Therefore, I’ve missed updating the Finance spreadsheet and have skipped updating the points table until next month. Mal’s photos from the Black Dog Ride have been given a second run but this time with the article that he sent in for his ride to the red centre in August. Finally, I didn’t leave a space for the Social Ride details at the end so here they are: Sunday 22 November 2015 Starting: McDonald’s Midland 8am for 8:30 departure. First stop Bindoon. Ivan

The Black Dog Ride to The Red Centre. The departure point was at Yahava Koffee Works on West Swan Rd, the morning was cool but

pleasant, about 100 motorcycles were partaking from WA, about 70-80 were Red Centre Riders, the rest were just doing the State run.

I had a friend Kush, who had ridden down from Geraldton to attend the ride, & when we went out to the bikes In the morning, he noticed his bike had a fuel leak from the fuel

tap.

So I set off to the meet point & left Kush at my place awaiting help from Harley assist, (Tractor Mechanic) They couldn’t help him as the “O” ring kit had to be ordered In, so

some fuel resistant Silicone was applied & he set off rather late to play catch up.

Our first stop was at The Mens Shed In Kellerberrin, where a Bar-B-Que was cooked for us & we had a look at all the cars etc. they were restoring & all the memorabilia,

Was an Interesting stop & would recommend If your passing through & they’re open, stop & have a wander.

My next stop was for fuel at Merredin BP, I got off my bike, removed my gloves & Helmet then my bike decided It was time for a lay down, broken Headlight protector &

bent foot peg with a few minor scuffs.

Sam Prince & his wife Felicity on the Kawasaki Vulcan were our ride leaders, until they had a collapsed rear wheel bearing just west of Southern Cross, the first casualty for

our TEC with the break down trailer.

Kush finally caught up with us about 80klms from Coolgardie.

Night 1 was spent at Kalgoorlie, a meal was arranged with guest speakers from

Mates4Mates at the Overlander Hotel.

November 2015 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club Page 7

Day 2. While everyone else set off for Norseman, where the local Lions were providing Brunch, Sam, Felicity, Kush & I went to Goldfields Bikeworks, Sam to get his rear wheel bearing

replaced, Kush to get his fuel tap sorted & me to replace the bent bolt In my foot peg, Sam & I had success but Kush had to resort to Silicone again.

We had a little drizzle between Kalgoorlie & Norseman, then the rain set In just before Balladonia, not heavy rain, but just enough to make passing Roadtrains a do or die

proposition.

We stayed at Madura Pass Motel for the night, had a good feed & a few very expensive drinks.

Day 3. The rain was still coming down In a steady drizzle this morning, so the guys with the

sidecar Café machine had setup under the main reception area under cover.

We all had a nice coffee before setting off, a few had left earlier, but we thought It might be better & wait until the sun had risen a bit more.

A few of us set off at 8:10, just ahead of the support vehicle, & about 80 klms before Mundrabilla, a roo had run Into the side of a Harley with a husband & wife aboard, he

had managed to stay upright, but when he stopped he couldn’t support the bike because (we found out later) that he had a shattered knee cap & his wife’s left leg was

broken In two places.

The poor buggers had to wait 2 hours for medical help to arrive, the rest of the trip to Ceduna was uneventful.

We all had Dinner at the Pub next to our accommodation, a nice Buffet washed down with a few CHEAP $6 pints of beer.

Day 4. Everyone had booked accommodation at the Caravan Park on the Foreshore at

Ceduna, so we all met up at the carpark outside, again for coffee supplied by our own mobile Barista.

We had a Police escort out of town with quite a few people lining the roads to wave us goodbye (or F.O) I couldn’t hear as I had earphones In with music drowning out their

cries.

Our first port of call was the Wudinna Primary School, again with a Police Escort, with Fire Trucks & Ambulances Lights on Sirens blaring, we parked up In the schools

Quadrangle, then the kids were like ants all around us & our bikes, some of us allowed the kids to sit on the bikes & rev them, (finger on the kill switch), then the local Lions

Club provided us with Brunch.

Next port of call was Kimba, where two of our riders grew up as kids, again the local Lions Club provided us with a great lunch with homemade soups, fresh out of the oven rolls with your choice of Ham, Chicken, Beef, Silverside & Pork, our bellies once full, we

hit the road to our final stop for the day at Port Augusta.

Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club November 2015 Page 8

Accommodation was arranged at the Caravan Park next to the Footy Club, who put on a Night of food & festivities Including a Quiz Night, & again CHEAP $6 pints.

Day 5.

Today when we awoke, It was to clear skies, only the second dry day since leaving Perth.

After our usual morning coffee, served by our personal Barista, we again hit the road for our first stop at Woomera, where we refuelled, had a bite to eat, had a look at the

Rockets & Planes, then set off for Glendambo, where we again refuelled & then headed to our last stop of the day Coober Pedy.

We had Radekas Underground Hotel booked out, some stayed In the Dorms, referred to as The Dungeons, while most stayed In Motel type Rooms, loved the place, again

CHEAP $6 pints & $6 cans of JD & Coke, (people were paying $12 at Kalgoorlie).

Most of us went for a walk around Town & settled at a place called Joes Diner for Dinner, where I had the best Pizza I had ever eaten.

I found Coober Pedy was like an Oasis, the road all the way from Port Augusta was relatively boring, flat barren with the occasional Salt Lake, then approaching town It was

like Rabbit Warrens everywhere, with the township bigger than I thought It would be.

Day 6. We left town fairly early as we had a long ride to get to the organised meet point, where all the different states would congregate before the final leg Into Uluru, which was In a truck

bay 28 klms from the Rock.

The ride took us through Marla to Erldunda, where we refuelled & turned off the Sturt Hwy to travel the 284 klms to Uluru.

The organised meet time was 3 pm, we arrived at 2:55, but we had to wait for a few stragglers, so we didn’t set off with our Police Escort until gone 3:30.

First time I’ve ever had a Police Escort at 130kph +, not bad seeing the posted limit was 110kph, Bloody Hoons, but the pace dropped off once we got to the Rock Itself, where we

dropped back to a sedate 60kph.

A woman rider from SA, high sided her bike on a corner & the bike rolled on top of her breaking her arm, such a shame to travel all this way to finally arrive at the destination, only

to be shipped out In the back of an Ambulance.

We all pulled up In the Carpark at Uluru for a group photo, then headed back to Yulara & our respective accommodation.

The first night we had our welcoming function held poolside at The Sails Resort, with a few guest speakers & a local Aboriginal played the Didgeridoo, sounded bloody beautiful.

The food, beer & wine flowed on until about 10.30pm, then we all headed to the bar at our

Hotel, The Outback Pioneer, where the beers were slightly more expensive than other

places in SA at $6.70 for a pint, but still considerably cheaper than anywhere in WA.

November 2015 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club Page 9

Day 7. Today was a rest day (Thank God), we done some washing & sightseeing, a few of us went for a ride out to the Olgas & as we were turning out of the Resort we pulled out behind a bus load of local Indigenous folk heading back to their community, between

the Resort & the turnoff to the Olgas I counted no less than 6 bits of rubbish get thrown from the bus, which I thought was pretty hypocritical as they told us to respect their land

the previous night.

Tonight we had Dinner under the stars, at a location several klms away from the resort, where we were treated to Kangaroo, Crocodile, Emu & several other types of bush

tucker, & of course beer & wine supplied as well.

To top off the night we were treated to a show by the local litterers & the resident Astronomer had set up some telescopes, aimed at some of our heavenly neighbours,

we saw Neptune, Saturn (rings & all) plus our closest neighbour, the Moon.

Day 8. Today we were Invited to the local community for breakfast, but as we had to get back to Coober Pedy for our return trip, It was decided to give this a miss & get on the road early, the first leg out to Erldunda was slow, as we were riding straight into the Sun.

Days 9 to 14. The rest of the trip was uneventful, the weather held out for us all the way home apart

from some pretty severe side winds causing us to ride at a 45deg angle between Erldunda & Coober Pedy, we took a slight detour from Poochera down to Streaky Bay,

with overnight stops at Port Augusta, Ceduna, Cocklebiddy & Kalgoorlie.

We left Kalgoorlie & the weather was perfect, but as we approached Perth the black clouds loomed ever more threatening, until as were passing El Caballo It absolutely

pissed down, so hard I was sitting on approx 20kph, I didn’t want to stop for fear of what was behind, but unable to go any faster because of poor visibility, the rain lasted about

3-4 minutes, then was fine the rest of the way.
