MathCafé?!?Don’tWeAlreadyHaveaMathHelpDesk?

HollisDuncan,SheriRogers,ShannonHarbertandBrieWood,Linn-BentonCommunityCollegeInthe2017-2018academicyeartheLinn-BentonMathDepartmentmadesignificantchangestothedevelopmentalsequencein an effort to shorten the path and improve student success. The processes and layout of the Learning Center largelystayed thesame. In lookingatdata fromtheonlinesoftwarewenoticed that studentswerenotdoing theirhomework.Afterseveralconversationswithstudentswefoundthattheywerenotcomfortableasking“basic”questionswhilesittingnext to someone doing Calculus. In response to this, the math department created the Math Café specifically fordevelopmental students. The café, along with intrusive tutoring and other procedural changes, has shown promise inhelping students improve achievement. Themath department is also using theMath Café as ameans for implementingMathRebootforstruggling,failingandwithdrawingstudents.Comeenjoycoffee,pastriesandlearnallaboutit.Room:ElToroIII(4thfloor)

Hands-onLaboratoryActivitiesforTeachingDifferentialEquationsandLinearAlgebra

DavidHammondandTiernanFogarty,OregonInstituteofTechnologyStudentsareofteninterestedinlearningconcreteapplicationsofthemathematicalcontentoftheircourses.Wedescribeapair of hands-on activities where students can see the use of differential equations and linear algebra for explainingexperimentaldatathattheycollectthemselves.Inthefirstactivitystudentsdiscoveradifferentialequationthatmodelsthevertical deflection of a horizontal beam under different boundary conditions. Data is collected to measure the verticaldeflectionfromhorizontalagainstthedistancefromoneendforseveralboundaryconditionsituations,andamathematicalmodelisarrivedatfortheverticaldeflection.FromthismodelthegeneralformofthegoverningODEcanbeinferred,andtheYoung’smodulusofthematerialmaybeestimated.Inthesecondactivity,UV-visiblelightspectrophotometryisusedtoillustratetheconceptoflinearcombinationsofvectors.Thespectraofasetofthreecoloredsolutions(red,blue,yellow)aremeasured;fromthesethespectraofanymixtureofthesolutionscanbepredicted.Studentsalsousetheleast-squaressolutionofalinearsystemtodeterminethecomponentfractionsofanunknownmixture,basedonitsspectra.Room:Suite620(6thfloor)
