The British admiralty chose Original montgomery in the 1890s to make the very first duffle coats. designed to protect the sailors from the elements, it kept out the rain and wind and kept in the warmth. apart from being dry and warm, the sailors also enjoyed the advantage of freedom of movement offered by the duffle.

The original duffle coat fabric was boiled wool that came from the Belgian town of duffle/duffel, where this type of high quality fabric, known as ‘serge’ was woven. The key features of our duffle fabric are the same now as they were then – resilience and durability, warmth and comfort.

montgomery has made duffle coats for the allied Forces in both World Wars, for all three armed Forces – the navy, army and air Force. in the second World War, our duffles were worn by the long Range desert group. Used as cushions during the day, as the men advanced across the desert behind enemy lines and at night, as the perfect sleeping attire, keeping the men warm, dry and comfortable. later, the s.a.s., commanded by colonel david sterling, wore our duffles. We do not expect our coats to go to such extremes of wear today – but it is comforting to know that they could.

We manufacture in Britain because we can ensure quality and ethical standards can be maintained. Furthermore, much shorter delivery times can be achieved. It also means we know all the people who work in our factories – they are friends as well as suppliers.
