Remember to sign in with your first and last name, grade, your teacher’s name, and the period. Show your pass to Media Center staff.

The circulation desk is where you check out books.Be prepared to say the first three letters of yourlast name.

Page 4: Orientation

This is where you return books and other itemsyou have borrowed from the Media Center. It is locatednext to the circulation desk.Be sure to return items on time so that othersmay enjoy them.

There are about 17,000 books in the Terrill Media Center! The titles are listed in the card catalog. Students need to know how to find these books so they can read and use them.

This is the fiction section. Books arearranged alphabetically by the authors’last name.

You might see these stickers on the spine ofSome of the fiction books. By looking at theseStickers you can tell the genre of the book.

This is the biography section. Books are arranged by the last name of the person the book is about.

Page 10: Orientation

Encyclopedias are located across from the Circulation desk. They may be checked out for two days. Encyclopedias are a good place to begin your research.

This is the reference section. You will find encyclopedias on many different subjects, dictionaries, and atlases.

This is the nonfiction section. Books are arranged by Dewey Decimal Number.

This is the magazine section. Magazines may be checked out for one week.

When you check out a magazine it will be putin a plastic bag like this. The bag is to protectthe magazine from wear and tear. Please return the magazine in its bag.

On this cart you will find audio books. We also loan tape players. These can be checked out for two weeks, the same as books.

Card Catalog computers are available in various sections of the Media Center. You can look up a book by keyword, author, or title. You can also access the Card Catalog from home at http://lib.spfk12.org

Page 17: Orientation

The Dewey Decimal System uses numbers to classify or organize subjects of books so that they are easy to find on the shelves. Melvin Dewey invented the system used to decide what call number goes on the book.
